I missed the Skorne chat from the first few pages (another Cygnar to Skorne convert!) and I wanted advice on infantry. It sounds like karax are not so hot, but what other units do people recommend and why?

Also Arcuarii look better than Cetrati in every way except for shield wall (and -1 ARM). Is there a reason not to get them?

I meant to post the rest of my Skorne here too. Soon

e: also, if anyone has any tips for spicing up the desert bases I'm all ears. I'd like something simple, but so far every paint I've tried is either way too yellow or brown.

Can anyone give me some good Skorne advice?
I really like Zaal, and I want to build to his tier 3.

Here's what I'm thinking for 25pts:

System: Hordes
Faction: Zaal - Immortal Host
Casters: 1/1
Points: 25/25
Tiers: 2
Supreme Aptimus Zaal & Kovaas (*5pts)
* Cyclops Savage (5pts)
* Titan Gladiator (8pts)
Praetorian Swordsmen (Leader and 9 Grunts) (6pts)
* Praetorian Swordsmen Officer & Standard (2pts)
Ancestral Guardian (3pts)
Extoler Soulward (2pts)
Hakaar the Destroyer (4pts)

Then expanding to tier 3 with:

System: Hordes
Faction: Zaal - Immortal Host
Casters: 1/1
Points: 35/35
Tiers: 3
Supreme Aptimus Zaal & Kovaas (*5pts)
* Cyclops Savage (5pts)
* Titan Gladiator (8pts)
* Aptimus Marketh (3pts)
Praetorian Swordsmen (Leader and 9 Grunts) (6pts)
* Praetorian Swordsmen Officer & Standard (2pts)
Ancestral Guardian (3pts)
Ancestral Guardian (3pts)
Extoler Soulward (2pts)
Extoler Soulward (2pts)
Extoler Soulward (2pts)
Hakaar the Destroyer (4pts)

The beasts aren't really doing much for the army, they're just what I have on hand. But if there's a better fit please let me know. Thanks!

Wow awesome advice! It's still amazing to me how many levels there are to this game that I still can't see.

I'm totally going to switch to the immortals now. They're half the reason I like Zaal so much, but you know :Skornergy: But with 9-12 souls on the board from the start, I can play with stone men all day long

Thanks!

So my FLGS is having a 35pt Steamroller tournament next weekend, and I've been trying to practice a bit. I quickly realized that my biggest weakness is managing the timed turns. Does anyone have any advice to effectively partition these 7 minutes so that I'm not left with half my army unused?
Like is it better to take 30sec and think of a plan, or to just start allocating focus and activating immediately, or what?

I'm playing Cygnar, if that makes any difference

Thanks! I think the practice advice is the best, and knowing your list well. We'll see how it goes

one thing I've done which the podcast specifically recommended was start writing down DEF/ARM of my opponent's models at the beginning of the game so I don't have to ask as often and so I can put together more consistent responses during my opponent's turn.

This is a great idea, and not just for tournaments. I can't count how many times I've declared an attack, then asked for DEF and heard "16 ". Still my fault for not asking beforehand, but if I could keep track of it on paper I would plan better for sure.

I've got a couple of rules questions dudes.

First is concealment, does it work against melee attacks?

I'm assuming it doesn't but I'm trying to make sense of the Reckoner's rules (didn't notice it had concealment). Basically what I'm asking is that it always gets +2 DEF vs ranged attacks thanks to concealment, excluding models that ignore concealment. It also gets +2 DEF in melee against living models thanks to Ashen Veil, so essentially if its charged by a Warjack/Undead(?) it doesn't get that bonus, correct?

Second is the wording on "cannot be targetted by" like stealth and the like. With Exemplar Errants they have Purity so they cannot be targetted by enemy spells, does that mean if an enemy declares to cast a spell on Errants: the spell fails and the focus remains spent? or that it cannot happen and can choose a new target? Same goes for stealth.

Just a quick note here: Stealth only says that ranged attacks >5" automatically miss. So AOEs are still pretty handy.
Not sure how it works with accidentally targeting a unit that can't be targeted, but I'm pretty sure its tough luck and you cast the spell anyway. If your opponent it a nice guy he might give you take-backs

I need some Skorne advice. I keep running up against Menoth and dying to fire all game long. Does Skorne have any way to deal with fire effects, and Menoth in general? I can't make it work.

Note: my worst match-up list was

eFeora
-Judicator
max Temple Flame Guard
-UA
Daughters
the Book
the Piper
ancillary attack guy
choir

So he was hitting me with 6 fire templates from turn 2 forward (2x Judicator shots + ancillary attack) and my infantry dies pretty fast to dice -2.

Any advice to deal with something like this?

I've got a question that might be very dumb, but worth checking:
Can the Kovaas score on a flag in scenario play? I think no because he is not worth any points, but at the same time he spawns from a 3pt solo, so I don't know.

My favorite trick with the Charger is to marshal him to the ATGM, then have Strangewayes behind him.
Works like this:
Strangewayes gives Power Boost for a focus,
Charger uses the Crit Brutal Damage Rune Shot, and uses the focus to boost attack and damage (powerful shot),
~40% chance to crit on the hit with 3 dice, which then gives you 4 dice on damage
Bonus: use the Marshal advantage to buy a second rune shot (not boosted but whatever)

Not a guarantee by a long shot, but the same points invested as a hunter (4+2) and much more fun

Missing a Gladiator, otherwise looking good. Rush is a core Animus with both of the casters you have since they lack any other way of speeding up your Titans. You may want to consider Nihilators over Swordsmen, the Swordsmen are solid but Nihilators are some of the best generalist infantry in the game. Swordsmen do fit in a Zaal list nicely though.

Gladiator comes in the battlebox. I'd also recommend an Extoller Soulward, because they add a lot of answers to certain lists (incorporeal, stealth) and work well with Zaal.

Since it's hard to just stand on one (Cygnar) leg, I've ordered some Skorne: the Battlebox, Paingivers, and an Agonizer, bringing me to 15 points. In the future, I really dig the look of Praetorian Swordsmen and what Makeda1 (or 2) can do for them, but I'm still too new to the faction, and hordes in general, to know where to go from here. So, any Skorne advice would be greatly appreciated! Particularly a sample list bringing me up to 35 points with either Makedas would be great, as well as general tips - for example, am I shooting myself in the foot if I take the Swordsmen over the Nihilators?

Just so this doesn't get lost in the pile,
Makeda loves Molik Karn. He's very fun and if your opponent hasn't seen him with Savagery (with pMakeda) then it's even more fun.
I really like swordmen, but only with the Officer. Side step and the mini-feat are what make them shine, and killing an entire unit of Arcane Shielded stormguard or sword knights is very fun. But expect them to die like nothing. Defender's Ward is pretty good on them to offset this a bit.

Other things to keep an eye on are the Willbreaker and the Extoller Soulward. Both are very good support pieces, basically solving problems vs things like stealth (soulward) or if you just need that extra bit of damage to finish off a jack (willbreaker's ancillary attack)

Here's a list to get things started:
System: Hordes
Faction: Skorne
Casters: 1/1
Points: 35/35
Archdomina Makeda (*5pts)
* Cyclops Savage (5pts)
* Molik Karn (11pts)
* Titan Gladiator (8pts)
Paingiver Beast Handlers (Leader and 3 Grunts) (2pts)
Praetorian Swordsmen (Leader and 9 Grunts) (6pts)
* Praetorian Swordsmen Officer & Standard (2pts)
Agonizer (2pts)
Extoler Soulward (2pts)
Mortitheurge Willbreaker (2pts)

Or if you're ok using less of the battlebox, swap the Savage for Tyrant Radheim. He's awesome with any of Makeda's spells, and makes your opponent curse his name. A great solo for flanking and tying up heavies while the rest of your forces get the job done. Also speed 8 + Savagery + Jump + reach = 20" of armor piercing attack madness

So I just picked up the Mammoth and I've got a question about how to clean it up before assembly. All the resin pieces have these pegs left over from the mold process, and they're often really thick, like 1/8-1/4". I've tried using an exacto knife on them, but I figure there must be a better way to remove these. Does anyone know? The cleanup on this model is a bit daunting.
Thanks

Holy poo poo, these are great! The mix of white and blue on the Cygnar really makes them pop. Also, you're the only person I've ever seen (except the Privateer Press model) who managed to put the muzzleflashes on Caine2.

Seeing how I've got a growing Cygnar army and a Skorne starter in the mail, what was your reason to choose these two? I wanted another army to get some games in with friends who don't want to dive into the hobby, and after playing Cygnar, Skorne was appealing to me because of all the things they bring that Cygnar lacks:
- Heavy Armor
- Hard-Hitting Beasts
- Tough Multi-Wound Infantry
- FURY.

Thanks!
I started with Cygnar because I liked the lightning aesthetics. I started with Skorne about a year later. I chose them for a few reasons, mostly similar to your list. But I also like having casters who can hold their own (eCaine excluded) and powerful solos.
Basically I got tired of a gunline army and went full melee. I still enjoy playing Cygnar of course, but Skorne is just a very different playstyle and I like it.

Plus I love cackling while my own troops are killed, knowing it's just making me stronger. Zaal!
