Oh God Yoshi's Island this is the best game holy poo poo I love it so much. This was my very first video game, I played it up and down, and for all the right reasons, because every single bit about it is fantastic. If you follow other "popular SNES platformer" threads, you know what this means. In the Mario 64 thread, I gave the German level names because they own. You know what? They own even more in this game. Whereas I find the English ones often boring as hell ("Make eggs, throw eggs", seriously?), the German ones are full of fun little puns and touches and show that the localisation team really knew what they were doing - because they didn't straight translate any of them, rather made up completely new names, very often based on the content of the stages. They played this whole game just for the translation, this is amazing, and I will give tribute. 1-1: Schokohügel [Chocolate Hill] The name makes no sense, but this level doesn't have a theme anyway. It's loads better than "eggs I guess". It's cute and fun and who doesn't like candy? This level starts out like and good first level should, teaching you how to play by giving you incentive to try things out rather than telling you "here is how you use this now DO IT". The actual tutorial level was only for basic movement; the meat of the game allows itself to be savoured slowly. The first few enemies are on level ground, then elevated, but all of them are literal cannon fodder; you can make eggs at leisure. Then, the first hill, the first flower that screams "get me!" with a tutorial after you've decided to get it (it's okay, proceed at your own pace), and a different kind of flower waiting for you, a Piranha Plant that's totally harmless but also totally evil Back on track, this guy is the perfect target practice, and the sounds he makes when he dies are almost pitiful. Until you remember that he tried to eat you Really, this game's sound and art direction completely own. Wait, the SNES games' does. Tangent: I HATE the Yoshi's Story sound effects. Absolutely, they should stay the gently caress out of this game, because the original has perfect ones. This might just be nostalgia talking but I don't care. Tangent end, and I promise I won't lose more words about it in these posts because I don't want to bitch. So, back on the sound direction. It's a very important detail, I think. Killing enemies is a big part of platformers, and making it satisfying time and time again goes a long way in alleviating boredom the longer the game progresses. This game has only two main sound effects for killing enemies (compared to for example Donkey Kong Country 2, which has one for EACH enemy, but as Piranha Plants show, YI isn't that far behind), but it uses them really well. They're basically a weak little squashing ("croak!") sound, and a clear PLOP. The last is also accompanied by a star circle. This has a gameplay effect. If an enemy plops, it won't respawn; if it croaks and falls offscreen, it'll return. Most notably with Shy Guys. And a return to the level. Message box tells you you might wanna check out that winged cloud. If you want to, it's optional. The idea of exploration immediately sets in, and your curiosity is also piqued right away by the two Plants guarding that pipe. What might hide in it? MYSTERY! SECRETS! Better check it out! And it's underground suddenly! Change of pace. The music is mellow. There's water flowing in the background. We're calm now, and it's good, because now it's collecting time. Looking at stuff time. What does the mystery flower do? Game never tells you. Puzzled me for ages. Once you find it out, you feel pretty drat good because discovering stuff that's not even slightly vital but just cool is amazing. It's also an introduction to flying enemies holding stuff, in case you missed the question mark flier at the top of the ladder before; he showed that sometimes, you have to be quick, here, you can take your time. And appreciate the power of ROCK. Because this guy is indeed our best friend and awesome. And he makes enemies go PLOP. Getting out of the bonus area shows you an easy to get flower which would have taken a little leap of faith without coming from below. Why not! Then we get the carousel, and where I got hit often because I wasn't used to the game's controls yet back in the day...I learned to loathe the Plants here, because getting out of there, chasing the baby, on the moving platforms, with just a tenous grasp of the controls? Not fun! I used to just flutter over this because I was afraid. I think this is legit dangerous for a newbie, but that's okay. It's optional. It shows that sometimes, you have to work for your bonuses. Even in the first level, because who said that first levels had to be boring? Completely un-boring: You can enter the pipe the Shy Guys spawn from. It's dark and scary down there, and they spawn from even lower into the room. Now that seriously creeped me out. The best thing? It'll get WORSE later. For now, we get a little flower difecta and one of them helps us out. Look at it smile . This game is the cutest thing. To the left, delicious secrets! A hidden cloud! Stuff that you'll find on replays, probably, rewards for exploration - always appreciated. Then stone rampaaaage! It's sadly stopped quite early, and then we get jumpy guys. I was really bad at dealing with them as a kid; I used to stop the stone, let them jump over the hill and try to crush them. Because you can trust Chomp to solve your problems! And you know what, it took me until this video to realize that the "strange hands" moving in the foreground of the stage were actually butterflies. I NEVER thought to look closer and just accepted it as a little oddity. I'm silly. Simply Simon fucked around with this message at Feb 13, 2012 around 22:58 |

I didn't recognize this, at first (haven't played it since around when it first came out on GBA), but the second that game select screen popped up, I knew. Maybe I just remember it wrong, but I remember parts of this game just haunting me. Granted I was never good at GBA titles in general. But it seemed so easy to beat, but absolutely terrible to 100%. I never did do it either. Can't wait to see how you do, Vicas.

I loved the piss out of this game. I played it during one December (when it was new, and I was twelve) while sick with the flu, and as little of it as I remember, I still prefer to think of it as a fever dream I could've done without remembering those horrible sound effects though

Was that intro new to the GBA version? I don't remember seeing it before. I remember hearing that Miyamoto was pressured to give Yoshi's Island the prerendered CGI look due to the success of DKC. If the opening cutscene was in the original, maybe it was a remnant of that.

I also remember on the SNES that you could tell which coins were the red coins in a group of normal coins because they were a slightly different texture. Which made things easier. I almost 100 percented this game but I couldn't get 100 on I think the last bonus level for the SNES.

Hmm, another really solid SNES platformer. I certainly played this game a lot. I think I might even 100%ed it at one point. It took quite awhile, but just coming back after you win and searching through a stage was pretty fun. You eventually notice that baby mario's sound doesn't bother you anymore.

Aiming with the eggs is 10 times easier once you learn there's a button to stop the reticle. You can even move and aim at the same time! It's particularly useful for things that require both precision and timing, that drat flower for example.

There is at least one really good Yoshi's Island Romhack, called Kamek's Revenge. Raocow did an LP of it back when he still posted on here frequently. It only had two major bugs that I recall being encountered, and only really cruel once or twice. Amazingly, only one level involved being forced to pick up five keys, thus giving you only one egg to utilize.

This is such a great level. It introduces the game's transformations, (which are fun) and very slightly increases the difficulty and exploration, just a hint of the game to come. Also, I can't have been the only eight year old who was scared of those chain chomps the first time I played this level. Not to derail too much into romhack territory, but on the offhand chance anyone decides to check out Kamek's Revenge because of its mention here, you should be aware a member of SMW Central has released a revamped version of the hack. It fixes all major glitches (the vast bulk relating to item disappearance) and broken or inconsistent aspects to the level builds, while leaving the bulk of the design alone. All levels are now 100%-able, and there are also 3 new extra stages for worlds 3, 4 and 6, with 5's being incomplete. The person in question has admitted to not putting much heart into the new stages, but regardless, if you want to play Kamek's Revenge as a completed project, this is the version you want. http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=viewthread&t=30833

This is easily one of my favorite SNES games ever. I remember getting this game when I was 7, but I was grounded at the time and so the box sat there TAUNTING me for a whole week. As soon as I wasn't grounded, that box got ripped open (carefully) and happy Yoshi times were had. I've actually never seen the GBA bonus stages either, since I never thought to buy the GBA version.

I have to disagree about Pink Yoshi being the best Yoshi. Dark Purple Yoshi is the best Yoshi. Dark Purple Yoshi is boss-killing Yoshi. He's used less than the other Yoshis though I think.
