Yay, it's another Vicas/Addar/Entropy production! And this is probably my most forgotten favourite game (I love it, but I never remember I love it). The art is charming, the music is delightful, the boss fights are awesome and the many, many different gimmicks are smart and fun. Only two levels awayyyyyyyyyyy

The wall traps in Burt's fort are probably the best use of Mode 7 in SNES history. It did exactly what that technology should have been doing, and unlike most Mode 7 graphics, it actually looked good doing it. Also, I love Burt's Fort because it's really the first instance of the friendly, happy game for babbies telling you that it's not afraid to kill your poo poo. The wall traps aren't hard to avoid, but if you get hit and haven't collected any starts, it only gives you about 3 seconds to recover the baby. It's also (I think) the first appearance of lava and the big threatening fuckers that jump out of it and attack you. It still hasn't gotten hard at this point, of course, but it lets you know that even though it looks way different, this is still going to be a mario game. It's interesting that a game that, at the time, was specifically meant to not have super crazy graphics, like DKC and such, has so many good visual effects. The things Nintendo can do when they set their mind to it.

Man, it really bugs me that you don't immediately eat every shy guy you run across and instead kinda awkwardly hop over them sometimes. Gotta eat everything. Also the big lava dudes (Nep-Enuts?) don't slow the game down on the SNES, so it has to be a GBA thing.

Hi, I'm the rear end in a top hat pedant in this thread. The traps in Burt's fort and red doors aren't actually Mode 7, but a thing powered by the Super FX chip that also powered Star Fox. In fact, all "mode 7" can do is adjust the position and size of a background layer per scanline, which, while it allows for some interesting non-affine transforms, wouldn't be able to render a polygon model like that.

When I was taking on Burt, I would always lick out towards the eggs when the flower was shooting them out, and if you hit them, they went into your inventory. It was much easier than waiting in the middle and hoping Burt wasn't in a rush jumping.

Those two videos are the most adorable thing I've ever seen featuring a bunch of middle-aged-to-old people. The pianist cautiously tries the sheet music, and has a lot of fun. And then the way the flautist and tuba player come over, and the pianist is slightly embarrassed about the videogame music yet excited about the song, and they're all just interested to try this cool thing, and then TIME LAPSE and we see them all playing together in a big performance of Yoshi's Island Athletic Theme (which has always been an astoundingly fun song). I love it.

1-4: Xilebos Festung [Xilebo's Fortress - you familiar with this guy? Awesome reference.] Suddenly, the kid gloves are off. Sinister music is playing. The architecture is oppressing. You get to toy around with a few buckets, though! There are no enemies, is this really a threatening cas...HOLY MOTHER OF JESUS THE BACKGROUND IS TRYING TO KILL ME! Then a giant mace shows you that yes, this stage does indeed mean business. Mini-Burts are "Elixbo"s in Germany, by the way (and you can ground-pound them). I got the strategy guide (which told me the previous bracket's contents)! The pit with the flower was extremely threatening to kid-me. Those guys are terrifying if you suck at throwing eggs, because they are pretty hard to hit! And jumping through them, man, that would require pro skills, right? That flower took me a while to muster the courage to get! The hidden passage is sneaky, and just there to skip a bunch of stuff and get a lot of coins - if you want to. It's cool. It'll also dump you out of the ceiling-hole at the start if you go too far left. Suddenly, lava! The difficulty rises exponentially, man! And there's Blarrgh hiding in it Oh hey, there's a secret coin cache down the spawner-pipe? That's a GBA addition. In the SNES, you could go through, and suddenly it was completely dark (WAY more than here), with only those creepy plasma dudes lighting up sometimes. Those secret, completely pointless areas are the only place they appear in, there's no reason to go down there, but man, it's so scary! Just a little touch that's simply there to be discovered, spooked by and thought of fondly years later. Like now .Lava platforms with Blarrgh senior was like the hardest stuff back then. It's only four, and he stays down for ages! But I was pretty easily frightened, I guess...countless deaths here. The last section is to cool down. Get you used to seeing Burts again before the boss gimmick reveals itself. GIANT MONSTER BOSS! This guy is obviously really easy, though it's not AS obvious that you're safe when ducking in a ditch. And he jumps right at you! Also, getting eggs from the uncooperative plant? Yeesh. Pretty good first boss, and man. That music is absolutely amazing. HAHAHA HE LOST HIS PANTS LOOK AT HIM 1-5: Donut Panik [figure it out for yourselves] Further proof that the German translation is just better. What kind of name is "Hop! Hop! Donut Lifts" anyway? Hey we go left here and whoaaa autoscrolling this is like the hardest thing ever aaaah panic (!). This is a really good level, because it's pretty basic if you're just going through, but very hard if you try to get 100 coins. So you can tackle it any way you want! The donuts behave very fairly, compared to others of their kind in different Mario games; they fall slowly, giving you tons of time to react. So, noticed the music notes the flower enemies sing out constantly? It's cute and funny. They're just minding their own business, being happy. Then you're in an autoscrolling level and see notes from off-screen. And realize that this cute little touch has gameplay meaning: The enemy is telegraphed a mile away. No surprises, a completely fair situation. Very well done. I thought the middle ring VERY important as a kid. That section before is hard! Seriously! I wasn't just very bad at the first video game I ever played. Oh yeah, and eating the flying guy will pop the cloud, in case it hasn't been mentioned yet (probably has).

Burt's an rear end in a top hat to do perfectly because if you hit him mid-jump sometimes he'll spaz out bouncing back and forth across the room a couple times and it's almost impossible to not get hit by him if he does that unless you're already crouching in one of those little divots.

I haven't watched the videos yet, but I have a question. In the GBA version, does Yoshi automatically walk forward when you defeat Burt? I discovered that unless you were IN the little pit when you hit Burt with the last egg, Yoshi would walk into him, and I would lose like 10 stars while the death animation played.

It was mentioned in the video that the flying shy guys who carry stuff fly away at some point. This is not entirely true. The shy guys who fly back and forth stay there until you kill them. The assholes you were talking about fly to a certain spot when you get near, stay still in that spot for a couple of seconds, then make a few small circles and fly away while laughing. Of course it's mainly these guys who carry red coins in the later levels. To make it more annoying, if you're too slow, you may trigger their appearance off-screen and only hear their laughter and see a glimpse of them just as they disappear.

1-6: High Shy Guys Yes, that is the name of the level in the German translation. Have I mentioned already that those guys are seriously awesome? The beginning is a good way of showing off the stilted dudes. Mainly that high ground = good. Also, you can try out eggs (which work) and licking them (which doesn't) and stomping them (which makes them lose their stilts. They weren't trying to bother anyone with those, you monster!). The red coin eggs are really rare in this game, and that's a good thing; miss a shot, and you can start the level over. Sure, this is true for many later challenges, but it's very obvious with the eggs. I'm not too fond of this level in general; mostly because I sucked at dodging the High Shy Guys (man this is such a good name), and because in the SNES version, the cave is seriously dark. Which also kind of sucks. You can still see a little outside your light circle, but...I'm just not a big fan of darkness gimmicks in general. What's the point? On the other hand, this is also the introduction to the trampoline balls, and while those are cool, figuring out the timing on getting really high hops was not. And you have to do one of those to get out. I keep, to this date, thinking that the cave part is pretty long, but...it's not. The aboveground part shows a nice setpiece in the High Shy Guys on the wooden board, how enemies interact with the environment; hopping on them gives you throw material right at the height you need it, which is well thought out. They could have made it so you had to go down, and that would have been annoying! Sick egg shot into the flower, though. Didn't even think of trying that before. Digyoshi is pretty annoying to control, yes. Fortunately, it's never used in a way that makes that, well, REALLY annoying. Oh, there is the second (actually pretty short) cave part. You have to realize that on the SNES, you can only see the lantern the pumpkin guys carry, that's a very neat effect, I'll give them that. That 1-up-balloon at the end mystified me as a kid. My reflex was always to jump into the goal post so what just vanished into a coin there? I kept forgetting to check. It's actually pretty cool: If you lick it up, it'll produce an egg that immediately cracks and gives you a 1-up. If you let it blow up (it grows), you get nothing . The next instance of those is...in World 4, I think! Also a pretty rare setpiece.
