Are you a BigMac of imbeciles!?

Persona 2 has a great story and fantastic characters, but god drat, I hate its battle system and its dungeons. The battle system is better than Persona 1's, but that's really not difficult. Innocent Sin on PSP is a little nicer since it allows the player to speed up battles by skipping animations, but the PSX original of Eternal Punishment is still painful to play. I don't want to discourage anyone from playing them because the story really is that enjoyable, but it's still a trudge, especially considering how much fun I have with P4's battles.

Broken in what regard? Is anything more broken than Mahamaon/Mamudaon with boosts ect. The PSP remake of P1 is perfectly playable and incredible enjoyable dungeon crawler with two full storylines.

The terrible positioning system? The way EXP is given out? Those two combined meaning that some characters will inevitably end up as dead weight?

Are you a BigMac of imbeciles!?

Yeah... it's really just not well thought out.

All characters use different melee weapons and different guns. All weapons and guns have different ranges from where the characters can attack. Characters like Masao, who wields an axe, have incredibly strange hitboxes. Sometimes, if you're really unlucky, the position you have your characters set in can prevent some of them from even attacking an enemy at all if they pop in their own little sweet spots. You can focus on the Persona to deal damage instead then, but hell, the Personas take forever to level up too. Many of them won't start out with a single physical or magical attack, instead opting for a status debuff. Eventually they'll learn something useful, but that doesn't change the fact that it forces the player to grind to have any chance.

Hell, speaking of Masao again, he's often the character on my team who gets "left behind" when my others are leveling up. His hitboxes are just so ridiculous that if I were to put him in a better spot, it would be to the detriment of my other party members by screwing up their attack locations in the process.

Maybe we should talk about the weapons themselves, I guess? The in-game stores all suck and barely sell anything useful outside of a change of guns and armor. If I want a good physical weapon, it's luck of the drop. Last time I started playing, I got all the way to Ayase and Nanjo was still equipped with a friggin' Mop.

Honestly, there is no reason to ever play Persona 1 on anything higher than Easy. Even on the lowest difficulty, the battle system is the antithesis of fun and the game continues to be a chore. I enjoy the characters and plot (like with P2) and the PSP version has a soundtrack, but I can't recommend the game to anyone in good conscience just because of how painful the battles are. If I'm missing something here, I'd love to know because I want to enjoy the game enough to play through to the end one more time, but it's... like it actively tries to prevent me from playing it.

Pretty much. I ended up just CWCheating my way through it.

Bloody Destiny and A Lone Prayer are pretty great, even though they sound like they'd be more suited to something like Outrun 2006.

No, no it didn't. The PSP version gutted out the original's pretty cool soundtrack, which is really one of the only positives things about the game in general, for new J-Pop battle themes that suck. Of course, the major reason they were changed was probably so they could try and help capture the people that hopped on the series with P3.

The rest of that post I agree with though, especially with that incredibly awful EXP system. Also, P1 has some pretty terrible dungeon gimmicks that find ways to drag the game down even further. My personal favorite dick move forces you to march past the only save point in the final dungeon with no way to access to it, but I heard the PSP version added more save points in the final dungeon.

You're free to not like the new songs but being a song with a japanese singer doesn't make something J-Pop. J-Pop songs are a hell of a lot more bubbly and catchy than the P1PSP songs.

If there's one thing Sony handhelds need more of, it's hunting action games.

Oh well, whatever sells, I guess. At least this one looks more interesting than, say, the one Omega Force are doing.

The genre, according to the trailer, is "Recovery Multiplayer Action". No idea what that means.

Sony Europe has a trademark for Freedom Wars as well, so this might be something coming overseas as well. Maybe we'll see it at E3.

I'm guessing, just based off what they're saying, that there is going to be some element of location capture/area liberation involved.

Freedom Wars is a brand new game which aims to offer a new gaming experience in the popular multiplayer action genre by taking advantage of the PS Vita's unique functions. The player is a criminal in a post-apocalyptic near future, sentenced to a million years of hard labor, fighting for his freedom. By completing missions where you rescue civilians and allies who have been captured by huge enemies known as Abductors, you can reduce your sentence. The game supports a maximum of 8 players at a time in both co-op and competitive modes, and supports Adhoc and Wi-Fi Online functions so players all over the country can play together. The game will also support the GPS and Near capabilities of the PS Vita to enhance the gameplay experience.

Product Description

The Prison Cities known as Panopticon - Where all living things are sentenced to "a million years of hard labor"

In the near future, the world lies in ruins, and the outside world can no longer support life.
Humanity created cities known as "Panopticon" around the world, and continued to survive.
However, the various cities compete with each other for depleting resources and the research which can sustain life in harsh environments.
To control their own population, each Panopticon imposes penal labor on their people - The crime of living carries a sentence of a million years.
Those living under these conditions are known as "Criminals" and they are forced into aiding the war effort as "Volunteers".
For a chance at freedom, these "Criminals" fight to rescue captureed civilians.

This is a 8 player "Recovery" Multiplayer Action game made possible by the many features of the PS Vita!

It'll be interesting to see whether the ingame Panopticons actually correspond to real world cities.

I tried putting my Vita in safe mode and restoring the database (which reset all of my awesome folder organization, hooray!) but the Pinball game install is still screwed up. If I try to manually redownload it from the store page instead of the download list it gives a error saying "The connection to the server or device has been lost (NP-2244-2)"

After trying again and getting error C2-12383-7, a bit of googling turned up numerous forum posts saying that people are having problems installing Pinball Arcade. Oh well.

Is this actually the case? When the Vita launched and most companies dropped their digital PSP game prices in an attempt for quick sales, Atlus was noticeably absent. It took a month or two before their first sale, if I'm remembering correctly.

I think I'm ready for a new game, now - I want a straight-up non-gimmicky action game, not an RPG, not a third-person-shooter, not a hunting game, just a nice solid action-adventure. Gravity Rush was close, but it didn't quite scratch the itch. Ys 7 was closer, but the slow dialogue and slower grinding have put me off for the time being. Are there any upcoming Vita games or existing PSP games that I could look into?

Well, I saw it on sale couple times over last say 6 months or so. It's not every months for certain, but it does go on sale.

On action games. Well, there is new Ys in September, Muramasa in June (I think) and Dragon's Crown in August. There is also Tearaway, but it's more a platformer. What about Guacamelee? That's somewhat of an action game. For PSP, there are couple God of War games, there is Tomb Raider, then there is Castelvania remake (dracula something or other), and I am sure a lot more, but those are what I have.

Btw, Class of Heroes 2 does look interesting, and I did get a physical PSP copy alongside PSN download code as well. Here is hoping it does well enough for CoH3 to come over.

Edit: Freedom Wars actually looks moderately interesting depending on where Sony goes with it. Apparently in Japan different prefectures would be different Panopticons which makes for kind of cool insta-rivalries. Not sure how it would work out in the rest of the world. Maybe they could do it by regions in US/EU.

I was wondering about dungeon/overworld crawler, and I only know of a few that are on the Vita: Book of Memories, Guardian Heroes (I think) and Ragnarok Odyssey. I've played the demo version of all three games, but I didn't like neither the Book of Memories nor Guardian Heroes, and am mildly interested in Ragnarok Odyssey, so I'd like anyone who has actually played the game to give me some informed opinion about the game, namely is there much more to the game than it is revealed in the demo - new moves, classes, a plethora of various rare weapons and armour to find and so on. And can I actually run around the overworld without choosing a mission, like in the Phantasy Star Online, or is the area confined to the mission selected, like in Phantasy Star Portable. I heard that an enhanced version of the game (RO:Ace?) is being released sometime soon, but I suppose if the base version doesn't have much to interest me, I'd not really care about the Ace, and I don't really want to buy the game just to check that, hence my questions.

I know there's also PSO2, but I'd rather not import it, at least the PC version can be patched into English. Also, if there are more games in this style (even on the PSP) please tell.

Class of Heroes was literally one of the early Wizardry games with a highschool anime skin. If they've put a plot in there and beefed up the combat system a bit it might be worth it. I'll probably spring for it anyway because I'm a sucker.

Ragnarok Odyssey does have a bunch of other moves/commands you can learn and lots of loot to collect, but I don't believe there are more classes and you can't run around the overworld freely. Ace is being released this August in Japan and is supposedly coming overseas, but XSEED hasn't said anything about it yet and we're probably waiting until E3 to learn more. Considering we already know XSEED's Vita efforts (Valhalla Knights 3 and Ys) for the latter half of the year, the wait for Ace might be longer than you expect. The game is designed to accept save data from the original, so it wouldn't hurt to buy the base game and transfer in a year's time to Ace.

Does the armour change a character's appearance, or do only costumes do that (since I've heard the free DLC costumes were pulled from the PSN store)? Also, are there MAG-like NPCs that can accompany my character? I think I like the game's aesthetics, and it doesn't seem to take itself too seriously, which I also like - does it change later, or does the game stay mostly cheerful and colourful throughout its course (although I don't even know if there's a dedicated Story Mode )?

Sorry for the torrent of questions, but if I'd be to spend tens of hours collecting loot and killing things it's be great if I was mostly sure about it.

Armor doesn't matter - there's no DEF modification other than the innate one your class gets, and any cards you put on top. In this case 'armor' = 'costume'.

Different outfits have different numbers of slots for cards, but all of them can be improved upon, so it's mostly just dress-up.

Nope.

The game has a reasonablish plot about giants repeatedly assaulting the place you're stationed in, but you have to go out of your way to talk to the NPCs between battles to actually uncover it. Other than that, yes, the game remains very happy-go-lucky. It's much more a fast 3D beat-em-up than a Monster Hunter.
