Capital: A city designated as a legislative seat by the government or some other authority, often the city in which the government is located; otherwise the most important city within a country or a subdivision of it.

I have a waterfall smack in the middle of my embark site. The river at the top is only one tile across, and it seems like sometimes one tile becomes empty of water due to the flow, at which point my dwarves decide they can cross it, which they are able to do with a ~50% success rate. Otherwise they fall to their death and drown.

Is there a way to forbid traveling through this area or do I just have to wall it off? I know about traffic designations, but even setting it as restricted won't solve the problem if it's the only way to cross the river.

If Toady hasn't changed the UI since I played (which is likely) there's a pathing option you can setup under "d"esignations. If you set an area to forbidden dwarfs will see each tile as 25 units across for pathing considerations (or more if you change the init). In the end you'll want to build a wall but until then forbidding that area should make the dwarfs reconsider walking over the area of there's a shorter path available.

I remember reading a trick in the last thread just a few days ago where you could force the liaison interaction without removing labors or waiting for breaks/sleeping/whatever to end. Does that still work and what was it since I've forgotten?

Yep, still works, I was using it just last night. After the first liaison screen pops up and you dismiss it, bring up the 'd'esignation menu, and then use your mouse (not the keyboard!) to designate any area for something. Even designating open area for removal of designations works. Just click and wave the mouse around and as good as immediately, the next screen will pop up. Repeat this process until the entire thing is done, and voila! Liaison discussions completed in under 20 seconds of real time, and about 0.000002 seconds of game time.

Yes, the only way to prevent dwarves from attempting to travel across something is to physically block the path off with a couple of walls.
Providing a safe crossing and using traffic designations to make the safe crossing much more likely to be used could also work, but is of course not entirely guaranteed to work.

I assigned all my children to a burrow so they'd stop following their parents around, but one kid got possessed and claimed an outside craftwarves shop. He wants gems, rocks and metal bars, but I don't have any metal bars.

So I'm taking advantage of the glitch with burrows to stop him going mad, (He'll just keep collecting from the burrow he's assigned to, forever, until I move the burrow over him or unassign him) so he's just collecting stones until I get a trade caravan.

He's up to 7 pages of stones so far, whatever this thing is gonna be once it's made, it'll be worthy of the term "artifact"

I just had my miner accidentally burrow himself into empty space and break his leg and arm.

It was something like this:

code:

             |V
             |V
             |V
             |V

             ______
             |V
I told him to dig a chimney for my butcher's shop, but I accidentally designated a channel where the butchers would go as well. So instead of a safe 1 z-level fall he took some breakages.

Anyway, the thing that amazes me about this is that he went to bed, the doctor treated him, splinted him, and now he's up and crutching his way about the fort doing his jobs again. I know this was probably completely functional versions ago, but this is really the first time I've had an invalid ACTUALLY still do work, instead of sit around being REST all the time.

Yeah but don't forget, you need to quick just place a few beds and tables and chairs...okay, I guess we need to get those made first, that'll just take a sec. Y'know, these rooms should really be smoothed, and that shouldn't take long. Could use some more manpower, though, and--oh, good, migrants! Oh, also, on that note: it appears that if you have a mining designation, and a dwarf picks that job so the tile starts flashing yellow? De-designating (i.e. attempting to cancel the job) will not work, and the tile will get excavated anyhow. Designations that have not yet been claimed as an active job can still be cancelled as usual though.

Main space middle left is the meeting hall, south of that is general food storage, north is booze storage, middle top blob is booze production, SE of that is brewable plant storage, lower right blob is seed storage, two blobs connected to that is farming. Large armor is human-sized. Unfortunately, all the interesting sites in adventurer mode are human cities, so you're not going to find armor sized for dwarves unless you invade a night creature's lair or something.

Aaaargh, I don't get Toady's logic. I'm trying to make pseudo magic spells with the new syndrome system, but I can't figure out a way to make buffs work. I figured it would be as simple as defining that only the creature casting the spell could be affected by it. I thought a syndrome wouldn't do anything to a creature that is neither immune nor affected by it, but apparently the game defaults to having them get it. And there's no easy way to make all those other creature immune without making the caster themselves immune as well. What's the point of even having the affected token if it doesn't actually matter

EDIT: Actually on reflection I must be missing something since gnomeblight only affects gnomes but doesn't have any immune tags.
