The alternative I was toying with was to have Fidel back down from the fight, but then the next time Gumpy took any kind of damage, I'd have the robot go trundling off to kill Fidel. Might have been a fun resolution, but I think I'm more or less satisfied with the way this plot thread has wrapped up.

"Professionalism" seems like it actually just works out as deaths/time. So a single lost merc in the very beginning of the game will have a lot of people turning you down (losing two or three that early makes it drat near impossible to hire ANYONE), but after a few game months a few losses don't matter much, regardless of how recent they are. I don't know if friendly fire (as it would be counted here) is considered to be different for morale/professionalism. I don't think the game keeps track of who actually kills a merc but I might be wrong.

Dynamo has Engineer trait and pretty bad physical stats, he'd make a good robot operator. On the other hand, who are we going to get to replace Fidel? I don't entirely think the demolition trait is badly needed at this point but I could be wrong. Somebody with good physical stats, decent marksmanship and who won't offend other mercs at this point. I'd say Len would be a good choice as he came up recently and gets along with pretty much everyone. The comedy choice would be Reaper to freak everyone out. Of course, Iggy is most available for hire and gets along well with Igor and Ivan, but the rebels hate him. And when we take Alma Conrad can be taken as well. Fiddle, will you have Speck do some commentary on Gumpys death and the Fact that it was Fidel who did it in?

Holywhippet posted:Do I recall correctly, that whoever is controlling the robot can't actually do anything themself in battle? Unless something has changed in this version of AIMNAS that I'm not aware of, the controlling merc can operate perfectly normally when controlling the robot. The only disadvantage is that they have to wear the headset in place of a radio or extended ear. That's one reason I worked in Gumpy's advanced AI and voice command software -- so it wouldn't be too ridiculous for a merc to operate effectively while issuing commands to the robot. LEGO Genetics posted:Dynamo has Engineer trait and pretty bad physical stats, he'd make a good robot operator... On the other hand, who are we going to get to replace Fidel? I still need to revisit squad composition, but I was thinking about giving the headset to Static. As for replacements for Fidel, there are a couple options. Hitman could slot in, or Hamous, maybe, or we could hire someone new. Sounds like a good opportunity for a vote! LEGO Genetics posted:Fiddle, will you have Speck do some commentary on Gumpys death and the Fact that it was Fidel who did it in? MERC is pretty much out of the picture with what went down with Flo and Biff. I even had Miguel comment in this post that the team would bypass MERC and pay Gumpy directly. Mechanically, I obviously still had to process his salary through MERC, but storywise the organization is defunct. Not sure it would make sense to have Speck pop up again at this point.

That bug is really nasty can hit you in two varieties: the first that you described where people only get unlocked till Bubba or a near merc if you are using the additional mercs patch. The other infuriating variety is where ALL the mercs unlock, you hire a few and then when you want to hire more mercs, its restricted at Bubba.

Yeah, I'm deprived of certain characters that kind of own, but this LP isn't really intended to be an exhaustive showcase of all JA2 has to offer (no bugs, no bounty headhunting, etc.), so I'm not too worried. Balime, Arulco August 6, 2011 -- 0904EST “Mike? You okay, brother?” “I’m fine, Sam.” “You say that a lot. It’s never very convincing.” Michael looks up from the desk and shrugs. “What do you want me to say, Sam? Two men died today. It’s not the first time men have died in a war, and I’m pretty sure it won’t be the last.” There is a long pause. “They knew what they were getting into.” “Fidel, maybe. But Gumpy--… I should’ve stopped him. I should have just stopped the whole drat thing, Sam.” “And risked Fidel going to the papers?” “If it came to that, I would’ve taken him out myself. He would’ve never made it off the island.” “Come on, Mike. I know you better than that. Besides, Gumpy’s plan was--… Hell, it was actually pretty smart. It almost worked.” “Yeah. It was the ‘almost’ that got him killed.” “How?” The question catches Michael off-guard. “What? “How did ‘almost’ get Gumpy killed?” “You were there, Sam. You saw the same thing I did.” “Humor me. How did it happen?” “He got cocky. He didn’t know when to quit, and he pushed Fidel just a little too far.” “Exactly. Gumpy was a smart kid. Maybe even brilliant. But, come on… he’d made some bad decisions since he got to Arulco. This was more like a video game to him than real life. He never respected the assignment.” “He was starting to.” “’Starting to’ sounds a whole lot like ‘almost’ to me. How long do you think it woulda taken him to develop into a real merc, like an Ice or a Thor? You did the best you could with him. I mean, you watched him, you coached him, you tried to keep him from doing anything stupid… But what happened to that kid was almost inevitable. And --… Look, I know how this is gonna sound, but it’s a good thing his mistakes caught up with him here with Fidel rather than out in the field. A screwup like that coulda had us burying an entire squad rather than just two guys who hated each other.” “I could have sent him home.” “Sure, you coulda. But what do you think he would’ve done then? Just said, ‘Oh, Mike was right. I’m not cut out for this mercenary thing after all!’? You and I both know he would’ve just signed on with another outfit and punched his ticket in Mexico or Somalia or someplace instead.” Michael and Sam share a silence. “I liked the kid, Mikey. I’m gonna miss having him around.” “Is that why you took a memento?” He gestures to Sam’s back, where Gumpy’s katana is strapped to his pack. Sam shrugs. “Never know when you might run into a samurai.” “It’s good to be prepared.” “Speaking of which, how are we looking for Alma?” “Good enough. Jesse’s team has been monitoring activity in the base. We should be ready to move within the next couple of days.” “What about squad makeup? We’ve--… uh, we’ve got a couple of holes to fill.” “I’ve been thinking about that. If you're okay with it, I’d like to pull Scully into my squad for machine gun support. That’ll leave you with a gap, but--… having seen Gumpy’s robot in action, I think you could do worse than to have a small, heavily armored anti-materiel rifle rolling around to breach rooms for you.” “I don’t think Gumpy left a manual, but I’ll have Static see if he can make sense of the thing. He seems like he’s got the right head for it. But what about you? Even with Scully, you’ll be a man short.” “Yeah. I’ve been thinking about that, too. Hamous and Maddog are available, and their auto-shotguns might be handy in close-quarters, but neither of them is exactly a first-class operator.” “You could grab Hitman. I know he said he wasn’t interested in a straight-up combat role, but he’s experienced, and he's pretty drat good with his rifle. He'd probably do it for the right price.” “Or we could bring in some new blood. There are still some reputable people available from AIM.” “Well, it’s your squad, Mikey, so it’s your call. Who do you want?” ------------------------------------------------ VOTE! Just a quick vote to fill out the squad, and I’m planning to push on to Alma by the weekend. Voting will close Friday morning at 5am US Pacific time. Should the last position in Michael’s squad be filled by: A) Hamous? B) Maddog? C) Hitman? D) A New Hire? E) Other? For being batshit crazy, Maddog makes a pretty good soldier. Really his only weakness is his marksmanship starts off pretty terrible. Oh and that he's psycho. But there's an easy fix to that, just give him weapons without full-auto. I could have sworn Hamous had lower marksmanship than that. Has he been training nonstop since you got him or did the mod change it? In any case, no matter who you take you should probably leave the door breaching to someone with a higher level.

At this point, I think Mike knows better than to get a second Fidel, so it would probably be Hitman. (Because I tossed a coin and Hamous lost.)

A vote for Hamous, only because I would want to see Miguel leading a mildly gimpy locals-only team for the final assault later. Also because there's a good chance of running into bloodcats near Alma, and Hamous's bloodcat encounter line is the best.

I don't remember what Hamous' starting stats in vanilla are like, but in this edition at least, he starts at 78 Marksmanship (the "+1" next to his Marksmanship indicates how much that stat has risen over the course of the game... contrast with Hitman who's already got a +8 to Leadership from training militia).

AIMNAS has some seriously tough and well-equipped dudes near the end. The tunnel route is also a lot more difficult, with higher-level enemies that often win interrupts when your guys go stumbling around blind corners.
