However after messing around with other pros and getting to know the game, I have come back around to that sauve bastard as one of my main pros. If you know what to do, he still owns.

Decided to take the plunge and get into this beta; does anyone have some pointers for a lovely Tank? I figured the slow, up-close damage-soaker would fit perfect for me, but it feels like I'm spending most of my time trying not to get my teeth kicked in by a gorilla and his Rocketeer-clone buddy, and the OP description is about as bare-bones as you can get. Is the charge ability ever worthwhile?

Is the charge ability ever worthwhile? Try leveling up a pure defense, shield offense build. (1. health 2. shield 3. offense 4. health etcetera) As for the charge, use it to butt people into your towers or off the arena. Remember, you have a jetpack, when in use you can't be grappled!

Edge Zero posted:Also is there a reason to ever use charge except to get the hell out of dodge when poo poo goes south or to go places a bit faster? It says it does damage but I never see it do much of anything if I ram someone. It also has knockback, and in such a strategic game, placement can be everything. Ringouts are an obvious choice when available, however, it's far from the only option. It's also great to knock people off the annihilator, especially on one of the small ones, or to knock people off of/into the jungle. Remember, most pros can't just easily get back up. Now they either have to spend several seconds running back up, or give up on whatever they were doing. Several seconds can be a big thing in this game. The other option, though, is pure placement control. Strikers, as a rule, are very mobile, and Assault is no exception. Get behind the enemy and you can gently caress them up with a knockback. An enemy pushing hard is very vulnerable to at push from behind, since you can knock them either towards one of your turrets or into a group of your guys who can then start a grapplechain. It's risky, since you have to charge right through the back of their group to do it, but it's relatively safe for Assault, since the charge will move you move of the way through and put you back on your side. Or, if you want to be really nasty, you can even knock neutral jungle bots off the jungle down into the fray; though, make sure you're putting them onto the enemy's side, and not your own! This isn't really an option on Spunky, but if you're lucky you might get a chance to knock your team's bots down into the jungle. Rare that you'd get that chance, but a fuji or a scrambler or a bouncer or even a blackjack can really give an enemy hell during an annihilator duel.

PalmTreeFun posted:Alright, I'll just take your word for it. I agree, it's one of the issues I have with the Mass Effect 3 multi. However, the amount of bonuses you get from leveling are very, very modest. Leveling your account doesn't directly give your pros any advantage, for one thing. Also, the only thing you can buy are costumes and XP boosts. In other words, in a given game, there is no way to get an advantage by paying. With the in-game currency, there are three things you can buy: Pros, Products, and Endorsements. Pros and Products give you more options, but you don't actually get any advantage, assuming proper balance. You automatically start with a full set of products, so buying more just gives you more options. Endorsements, however, can give you a mild edge. Endorsements are little direct stat buffs that you can buy & equip, like gear. Thing is that you have to spend in enormous amount of money to get that edge. You have to play hundreds of games to give yourself any sort of noticeable edge against other players. The way it works is massively diminishing returns for money spent. There are level 1 endorsements that are very cheap to buy, so it's actually pretty reasonable to fully slot out a level 1 endorsement build. But just like products, you automatically start with a full set of level 1 endorsements, so buying different level 1s just gives you more options. If you want to buy higher endorsements, the price moves up really drat fast. I made a graph! ![]() Each point is an endorsement level. You can get a small bonus for a small cost, but to get even a tiny amount more costs a crazy level. You also note that there are some points on that graph indicating an endorsement that costs more for the same bonus. This is not a mistake. Level 2s and Level 5s give a higher stat buff, but come with an additional stat debuff, so technically they're not stronger, just more finely tuned. Hope that makes sense. tl;dr Point is that while you can pimp out your character in this game by leveling, it's only to a very small degree.

The problem is that certain classes only become viable with certain combinations of endorsements. At least, that's how it was in the first MNC. Play for 15 minutes or so to unlock one custom class, and now you have all the endorsements. No grinding, no levels (aside from just pure cosmetics), no pay2win. Endorsements aren't really the biggest problem though. It's that you're locked out of all but a few classes unless you either do an obscene amount of grinding or you pay $7.50 or $15, depending on the class. The original game cost $15 alone, and I'm not willing to pay $60 or more just to be able to help my team by using a class they need to help win. Especially considering the greater emphasis on teamwork in SMNC. And when they add more classes, you have to pay even more or spend even more time. For instance, TF2 would be absolutely terrible if you couldn't play medic unless you coughed up $20 or something, because teams absolutely need medics to win. Or maybe you only have pyro, spy, sniper, and engineer unlocked on the current cycle, so you're stuck being pretty much useless to your team when every other player isn't playing a helpful combat class. There is no pay to win in SMNC. Each class cycle opens up a respective class in a certain category. You'll never have a cycle where there are no Defenders (Combat Girl or Support), Strikers (Assault, Karl or now Megabeth) or what have you. Each class role is always fulfilled, so there's no danger of that being there. The costs of buying a class is a bit steep, but I earned the coins to buy two classes after a few hours of gaming. It does, however, suck that there is a cycle when there's such a limited amount of characters at the moment. I really wish the Endorsement and Product system was better and wasn't such a giant goddamn sink because right now it feels like an afterthought.

People like to complain and say the game is pay2win, usually when they straight up got out played. The advantages that products give you are not enough to really make or break a team, lovely players like to think otherwise so they can blame their loss on something other than themselves. You can save your coins up to get them also, so I fail to see why there is an issue. Also all this talk of grinding.... its called playing a video game, and its fun lol. I feel the product system is fine right now. The prices are pretty fair for what you get. Pros can be really expensive, but that's an intentional thing to discourage newbies from buying the harder-to-learn Pros. Also, Uber has to make money somehow. Endorsements are a loving trainwreck. Let's take a build that I pulled at random from the forums. That will set you back 91,000 combat coins. Looking at screenshots from my games, I'm going to say that a win is roughly 150 CC and a loss is roughly 60. Let's say you have a clean 50% split between wins and losses. This means you will need to play 867 games to afford that endorsement set. If we are modest and say that the average game takes 15 minutes, that is about 217 hours of gameplay. That is nine days of you doing literally nothing but playing the game. This might be acceptable if that was all you needed. But that's for ONE BUILD. If you want to play another Pro, or maybe you just want to a different build for your current Pro. Then it's another week of playing. At that point, combat boosts become a very appealing way to cut down on that grind. I think you can argue a feeling of Pay-to-Win at these prices.

It's the LoL model. This isn't TF2, it is a Shooter-Styled moba. I loved MNC and would have loved MNC2, but this is SMNC, a differently catered game set in the same universe. I am just lucky that I enjoyed League of Legends enough to stomach that system all over again as I progressed into SMNC. I am really sad that all the MNC fans got shafted with the shift, and truthfully a better way of doing it would have been to make a new game without reference to MNC so that the MNC fans didn't feel so alienated, but UBER wanted to re-use their universe and if this is the only way for me to keep enjoying the style and characters they built, I am okay with it. It could have been a turn based facebook dating game, but it isn't. I think the gameplay is solid and the dev attention to it is reasonably good. Yes, some poo poo is annoying, but UBER have made a commitment to the free to play "Gamers control your game" model. They will update often, and they need to keep players happy or else their salary will die off. Complaining about the currency system is a moot point, because there isn't a way to shift it. Complaining about cost of products/pros/endorsements however is entirely valid. TL:DR - The principles of regular team based shooting games don't apply here. I'd also argue against what you said about "grinding". I feel like people use that term too generously these days. To me, grinding implies doing something tedious just to make money/xp/etc. If you're just playing the game naturally, the way you'd be doing it anyway, can that still be said to be grinding? Yeah, you do have to play around 40+ matches to get enough to unlock a pro, but, I mean... what else are you gonna be doing? It sounds like a ton of games, but if you play just a modest amount, like 5 or 6 games a day, then in a given week you'll earn enough to unlock somebody*. Yes, it would take a massive amount of either money or creds to unlock everyone, but are you really gonna specialize in every character? If you unlock even a single character, then in between that and the five free ones, you have really good chances of having someone fun to play as in any given match. That's been my experience, anyway. *(In case you're wondering, here is my math. A loss is about 55 coins, and a win varies between 110-140. I shot low and averaged that at 80 coins a match. Your first win of the day is doubled, which often comes out at around 300 or more. 5 matches, then, would be (4*80)+300=320+300=620. Single day of matches is 620, seven days like that would be 4340 credits in a week, one or two more matches will give you enough for a hero)

How did MNC players get the shaft? I bought the game for 15 bucks, played it for a few hours, and felt like I got my money's worth. Uber provided a few nice updates, so it's not like they abandoned the product right off the bat. Uber just realized that they're not Valve and capable of boosting sales with updates like TF2. It wasn't a feasible model for them, so they took the game assets and tried something else. I think it was a solid plan.

Telling people who have issues with the fundamentals of the game itself, in that it requires a time or money investment to unlock certain build customizations that are often outright-necessary to survive, that they're only complaining because they're baddies or whatever isn't a sound argument. I also don't even know what the gently caress your last sentence is even referring to. For new players who don't have the luxury of joining premades or people who just don't want to go to all that effort just to enjoy the game, grinding against constant steamrolls really isn't fun. Products can be pretty cool, and they can give you an edge, but the game starts you out with some decent ones anyway. Even if you have super maxed out awesome build, that's maybe 5%-10% of the game. 90% is going to come down to how well your team works together. In other words, if you're playing in quick-matches and not using any coordination, you may as well just give up before you begin. The only way to do well and win is to use teamwork. A proper voip service with people you know is the best way to do this. The in-game voice and quick-comments, though, work well enough.
