Visiting my relatives in San Francisco, my 2nd cousin Jesse showed me his .300 Blackout AR with A SpecterOS scope & an AAC Blackout 18T flash hider. I want the exact same thing but with a 10.5" barrel & a suppressor, just to claim Oregon superiority.

His windowed PMAG looked like it held 30 rounds and when I asked about the bullet button he skirted around the question. He also showed me a cell phone pic of his friend's Mk.18 and when I asked about why it had a stock on it he said, "That's just on when it's in the house." His Mk14 has a 10-round mag but I couldn't figure out how the paddle release allowed to let the mag came out and stay CA compliant. All I know about him is he works nights & it involves using firearms. I should also note I'm staying at his house this whole time I'm in San Francisco.

I was recently reminded by mikerock that we're working on bringing these into Canada, and how much I loving want one. You have no idea. Like, the Vz. 58 that is dirt common here? I don't give a gently caress about them. I have tried and failed to care about them or find them interesting at all. But a Type 81 or Type 81-1? Yes. Take my money. Take it now.![]() When these things get in the country, presuming a cooperative RCMP/CFC, I will have one. Look at how loving rad they are. ![]() This dude looks pretty satisfied with his: ![]() And you better believe that as our resident filthy knife-collecting scrub even the bayonet excites me: ![]() ![]() For those unaware the Type 81 and Type 81-1 was the Chinese People's Liberation Army rifle from 1980ish until 1995. Chinese special forces troops used them in the border war with Vietnam ca. 79-81ish. I have a picture around here somewhere of a Chinese raiding team with at least one Type 81 in the mix but I cannot loving find it when I want it so to hell with it. Anyway the Type 81 was developed to replace the AK47 with an even beefier, more capable gun based on an improved SKS action which could function as an entire suite of weapons much like the AK has the RPK. There is a Type 81-derived LMG/SAW. The Type 81 feeds from Type 56 magazines (AK mags) or its own 75rnd drum (which I cannot have, oh well). Its safety is located on the left side by the grip, where it belongs. They moved the front sight backwards to the gas block to expose the reinforced barrel for rifle grenade usage, and removed the traditional Chinese folding triangle spike bayonet found on their SKSes and AKs and replaced it with a detachable knife-style bayonet. The 81-1 has a folding stock, initially for paratroopers (but the Chinese insisted for a loooooong time on referring to all folding stocks as paratrooper-type). Anyway unlike the Vz. 58 which utterly bores the almighty Christ out of me, the Type 81 is completely loving badical and I will have one. In fact I want one enough that I would actually put my name/money down on a pre-order list for one when that comes up, depending on how likely it seems the RCMP would waffle at the time. ![]() It's been awhile since I wanted a gun strongly enough to post ITT.

Could be! Who the gently caress knows with the RCMP! They allow things one day and disallow them the next! They spitefully prohibit guns which have been available for years just to stick it to gun owners when they hear the registry is dying! They have irrational and entirely-too-movable goalposts for gun designations with little to no transparency! They allow some bullpups in but not others while claiming bullpups are prohibited! They restrict some scary black rifles and not others! They have no concept of caliber power! Who the gently caress knows!!!! EDIT: More type 81 pictures. Found SOME of the Type 81s in the Sino-Vietnamese border war but not the images I had in mind. Plus a bonus publicity shot of Chinese special forces training. Publicity! ![]() War! ![]() ![]() ![]() If anyone has the pic handy of Chinese SF in Vietnam early in their border war on a green hill with some jungle in the background and at least one dude with a Type 81, I'd be obliged. I couldnt find that picture you were talking about, but I did find a pretty neato PDF about the Type 81, it looks like its from some gun magazine around the time they were phasing the type 81 out of service since it goes into the QBZ-87 towards the end. I know that Norinco made a few variants that were imported into the states in the early 90s but Ive read that their really hard to come by and demand a pretty high price tag as such. Oh well, more Chinese type 81 propaganda I guess.![]()

Ive found dueling sources that say the Type 81 can feed from Type 56 magazines (Chinese AK) OR it does not feed from any AK magazines at all. Someone dig up a source that reliably proves it either way tyia!!!!!!! edit: Reliable sources say the Type 81 magazines are a small bit wider intentionally to prevent their magazines (which have bolt hold cutouts etc.) from being mistakenly inserted into Type 56 rifles. This does not necessarily preclude a narrower Type 56 AK-type magazine, therefore, from fitting into the Type 81 -- but again I have no reliable source that says if it can in fact lock and feed in a Type 81. Some Chinese-ish sources say yes, some say no, Gabe Suarez says no. The sheer lack of information is maddening. Augrhggrh. Gtab fucked around with this message at Apr 4, 2012 around 21:53 |

Yes this is the root of my problem: nebulous nerds have conflicting opinions on various sites and none of them are altogether authoritative. Gabe Suarez is an AK-obsessed gun instructor with an immense wealth of knowledge about Commbloc weapons and he says no. For every source that says yes, another says no.
