This Licker is not having a good day. Still, he is doing better than his brothers. JR shoots him right in the chest, and black blood sprays out in a gout. The Licker pounces at the cowboy but it's far too slow and hurt to even come close. And the poison takes another toll on the creature.

Licker defends! 3, so 5 damage. Soaks with a Severe. Takes 1 poison damage filling his last box. And makes a completely ineffectual attack.

Hugues Turner Fate Points: 1

After Jenny threw what was left of her car at the Knight, the blasted thing somehow managed survive and then retaliate with one of it's javelins, and it had a nasty arm with those. The rest were just slung on it's back, so Hugues ran up to the demon and tried to yank the entire quiver off it's back. The thing was strapped on pretty tightly, but his extra weight on the knight would probably disrupt throwing more of these things.

"I got him! Get 'em, now!" Hugues hollered out, a little bit surprised he could hear himself now that his hearing was starting to return.

Backed against the wall by the raging Arachneigh, Cole pulls his crystal out and a burst of white light flashes in the creature's eyes. It isn't much brighter than a camera flash, but to the subterannean Arachneigh it might as well have been a tiny sun. Temporarily blinded, the creature staggered back.

Jenny Hirsch FP: 1

Jenny throws up her left hand as the demon's javelin hurtled towards her. Power sparked and erupted from the shield bracelet, taking the form of smokey electric dancing humanoid shapes which interposed themselves between her and the incoming missile. As the javelin passed through each figure, its flight path curved, first gently and then at greater and greater angles until it tumbled harmlessly into the ground a foot or two away.

She hadn't been 100% positive that would actually work until right that second. Hughes has been dubious about the design's efficacy, but it seemed like it'd worked in the end.

Jenny raises a hand to wipe away the sweat droplets, both from her exertion and the heat of the roaring fire. It was distressingly hot and loud and bright in the night sky, and it gave her an idea.

Bending light was one of her first lessons, and creating an effective veil took a tremendous amount of practice and effort. it was difficult enough to shield herself and perhaps a small area and still be convincing. But an ineffective veil? She could make that. She could make that everywhere.

As Jenny concentrated, patches of air began to twist and warp. At first it was just a shimmer, like a heat refraction, but as she poured more power into the effect they began to glow and distort more and more violently until they were reflections of the still-towering inferno of the plant monster. First one, then two, then ten floating in the air, shining patterns of brilliant dancing light directly at the demons in the parking lot.

Taking the free tag on Car Trouble plus my +4 Shield Ring to dodge the attack. Summoning 4 shifts of power and rolling Discipline -+/- +6 = 5 to create a scene aspect - Reflected Fire.

As the Arachneigh refused to go down no matter how much firepower she threw at it, Ada began cursing. What the hell was the drat thing made of, iron? The rider who'd arrived to the scene on it was a bigger threat, but leaving it to sucker-punch someone from behind was a screamingly bad idea. "Goddammit, this time, stay down!", Ada yelled as she clenched her fist and focused, taking advantage of the Arachneigh's distraction to gather up a much greater surge of power than before. The blood that had already slice into the Arachneigh came to life again, twisting within the wounds and putting it down for good...hopefully.

Tagging the Blinded aspect on the Arachneigh for one more shot...Base roll is +6, upped by 2 by the tag, and a good roll from the bots +9, with six shifts of power. Hopefully, this time it'll stick!

As Ada's blood drilled into it, the Arachneigh gave out a death scream, slamming into the ceiling and walls of the room, and finally laying still. It did not move again.

Outside, the Rider reached back for Hugues but couldn't seem to catch hold of the kid. The bleach white skull rotated all the way around, facing Hugues. It opened its mouth and spat a cloud of bright green gas in his face.

So...it can turn it's head completely around. Wasn't fully expecting that, but it wasn't like the skull was attached to anything. Hugues released his grip on the javelin quiver with his sword arm and thrust his sword upward. The sword rang out and shined with a silver light as it passed through the poison gas. The light from the sword forced the gas out of the way, either dispelling it outright or reducing it to non-lethal quantities.

Doing this cost him his grip though, and the motion made him lose his balance. The knight could reach the javelins again.

(Using Hugues' 6 shift counterspell in the Not-Warden Sword to negate the spell instead of a block.)

Hugues was only on the ground for a moment before he bounced right back up on the knight. Alright, if that head could rotate completely around and the armor was filled with probably more of that poisonous gas...then it could probably be removed, right? Rather than tying to stop the knight from getting a good grip on the javelins, he reached higher, trying to yank the skull out of...whatever was holding it in place. At the very least, having little fingers dig into your skull had to be distracting.

The reflected light intensifies, brighter and brighter as the fire continues to rage behind Jenny. The reshaped air patches move closer and closer to the demon, shining from all sides as Hughes struggles with his skull... and distracting the demon enough so that he doesn't notice the spinning disc until it's far too late to avoid.

Jenny had never skimped on the tires, but the explosion had torn one of the wheel rims clean off the tire. Well, not exactly cleanly - the metal was bent and twisted from the heat damage, with a jagged edge running along the midpoint of one side where it'd rested against the ground and been pushed hard against it, but more than good enough considering the circumstances.

The disc slams into the creature's pressured armor at a little below waist height, around where a human's pelvic bone would begin. And through the armor's exterior, barely slowing down as it cleanly separates the protective armor into two distinct halves.

It looks like Mel might be losing another sibling today. Jenny's sudden grin was fierce and brilliant in the reflected light.

The armor splits in two with the screech of cut metal and topples backwards as the bright green vapor bursts free and dissapates into the night air. Hugues lands on his rear, holding the skull. Its evil red eye-lights have gone dark, and it just looks like an ordinary skull now.

It's quiet as everyone takes a moment to breathe. No more enemies appear. It seems like the battle is over. Forward Thinking is a wreck, all the windows are blown out and the building itself has taken some severe damage from the now-melting-into-ectoplasm tree corpse. By morning, there won't be any trace of the enemy.

Far, far in the distance, a siren wails. But it's not coming this way. You'd think an explosion like that would have brought the cops in, but the demon must have veiled the area to prevent mortal interruptions. That was some strong magic, but it wouldn't exactly be beyond a greater demon.

Seeing everyone outside is in one piece, Cole staggers back into the building. He nods to JR (still under the Lauden potion's illusion) and tugs open the stairway door, forcing himself up the stairs one at a time.

Mitsuo is in a bad way. The man is propped against a wall, eyes closed, hand stills clenched on the hilt of his katana. He's surrounded by cut and sliced vines, and other things that have already melted too much to keep their shape. A purple animal is standing protectively over him, the size of a large housecat. It's been hurt too, black blood runs down the animal's twisted little face. It hisses at Cole.

Combat is officially over, post freely.

Murray flinches visibly as Hugues commands his name. Thrice-invoked, it would usurp his bond to Mitsuo, who was not conscious to fight for control of it. He did not technically need to take orders from Hugues, but given the situation it was easier to play along.

"Defending my master." Murray replied in a deadpan. "He is bleeding to death, despite my efforts. I am already bound to harm no humans, your command is unnecessary."

His big black eyes flick to the skull Jenny is holding, and widen in surprise. He opens his mouth to speak but closes it again, as if thinking better of it.

"How long are you in service? Until he's safe? Until sunrise? Why haven't you poofed now?" Then he noticed the way he looked at the knight-demon's skull. Murray rolls his eyes. "I have the right to remain on this plane until the confluence ends. I have been feeding your little group information since the day I was summoned, in return for the right to observe the outcome. We are on the same side." He glares at the skull. "Which is why I am telling you right now, that is the skull of the Knight of Toxins. He is one of the Three, well... Two now, that are trying to cause the Wrath you mortals are trying so hard to prevent. Destroy that idiot before he puts himself back together!"

The lights in the skull's eyesockets burn green again. Softly though, with barely any strength. "Betraying your own kind, Murrazanoth. To help humans. This will not go unpunished." It says. The voice is very deep, and has an echoing quality. It sounds weak, beaten.

"Oh, go back to the pits." Murray growls. "You failed, Kurevanixx. But at least you haven't gotten yourself destroyed like dear brother Hexxisoth." Murray looks at Hugues, grinning evilly. "Yet, that is. Go ahead, little master. I gave you his Name. If I am to be branded a traitor, might as well make it worth the punishment. But do tend to Taichou, lady nurse. He must be kept alive, you see."

The demon actually bows to Jenny before stepping aside.

Murray needs Mitsuo alive, or there is no bargain, and he's forced to go back to the pits. He would really rather not right now. His motivations have been stated, but it's anyone's guess as to if he's being honest.

But before we leave, there's one other issue to take care of."

Jenny motions at the skull with her hand, keys still hanging loosely from it and jangling. "We can't just let him go. I, uh, met with Mel at the church. She's been taking the stolen body parts and somehow molding them onto someone else. Dennis. Er. Denizen. He sold his soul to her in exchange for something to do with a woman, I didn't get much more than that."

Moving towards the skull, Jenny leans forward and stares into its eyes. Eye sockets. "Just destroying the skull is the same as releasing him into the wild, and as much fun as it's been I don't really want to see him again if we can avoid it. And we need the information, frankly, because I'm not sure where to go from here. Can we just trap him in there? Permanently?"

"Because the only reason you haven't been killed yet is because it would drive Mitsuo insane." Cole said, checking Mitsuo's shoulder. Sure enough there was a small black tattoo, a demon's symbol. "If you are on our side, just do as you're told."

By the time Hugues got home it was early morning. Nidawi was alone on the windowsill, waiting for him. She looked guilty, which was unsettling on a pixie.

"This be gettin' too dangerous Grumpypants. Some o' the others be thinkin' to go home." She sat on the sill, hugging her small knees, and wouldn't come into the house. "Letcha down, I did. Got caught, didn't tell." Her wings drooped. "'e made me promise not to, in return fer savin' me from the wardings 'round that big ol' castle place."

She gave the other pixie's reports for them. Chepi and Hinto had met up when Veronica visited the dark haired Skavis from the yacht. (aka Speedo) He was staying in a five star hotel down by the waterfront on the top floor. There were four or five other people there, but Chepi didn't recognize any of them and the pixies hadn't dared to get close enough to see if they were all vamps. Calfury had only briefly reported in. Fat ghoul was up to something (she was sure of it.) He'd packed up his van with a whole bunch of supplies, and had been nervous all night.

Warden Cole double checked the containment wards around Kurevanixx's prison. New Orleans being a haven for all kinds of summonable things, Cole had requested- and recieved- a premade prison cell in case he ever needed to hold one for a short time. There was a 6' square of concrete in the basement marked with white tape. Inside the square was a double-layer circle, the outermost of which (when activated) couldn't be crossed by anything corporeal. The innermost couldn't be crossed by anything spiritual. The entire thing was made of inscribed metals built directly into the concrete. It would hold anything short of a loup garou- and Cole was the only one who knew how to take it down. It hummed like heavy machinery.

The skull itself was encased inside of a 2' square ice block in the middle of the double layered circle. Hugues was right to be concerned about the gas reforming, and Cole had taken no chances. It also shut the demon up, for which the Warden was infinitely grateful. The unending stream of insults and threats had gotten really annoying by the end of the taxi ride.

Cole knew he wouldn't be able to keep it all running for more than three or four days, but hopefully Captain Bellworth would get back to him by then. He'd tried to get into contact with her three times, once last night and twice today, but there'd been no response. He was still on his own.

Murray hadn't gone in the heavy duty circle, because keeping the demons together even if they hated each other was probably a bad idea. No, Murray was currently in a cat carrier, which was inside of a chalk and salt version of the big circle. It wasn't unbreakable from the outside, so Cole wasn't happy with it, but he didn't have much choice. No one had time to babysit the demons.

--

As three o'clock rolled around Cole called to check up on Andy and the two priests. They were still locked up in the Shrine, and they were all fine thank you for asking. Andy did not take the imp's destruction of his car with dignity, and informing him that Jenny's car had also met its fate did not make him feel any better.

He called the hospital asking after Mitsuo. The wound in his leg was not as bad as it'd looked, though he still needed blood. The concussion was the big worry. He should have woken up by now. He hadn't. Cole thanked the nurse and hung up the phone, feeling bitter. Demon summoning was bad enough, but binding one to your own soul was just dirty. He didn't know what to do with Mitsuo, or Murrazanoth. And that was something he couldn't ask Captain Bellworth because he knew exactly what she'd have to say about it.

He made a pitcher of iced tea and sat down to wait. He wasn't sure what was going to happen at this meeting with the White Court, but he had a bad feeling he'd need his sword by the end of it.

Cole's got a banked point, so I'm going to grab Might at +1 and bump Rapport to +3. Reminder: at the portal you left Cole behind, so his "Sir, Yes Sir" aspect did not change.

Hugues Turner Fate Points: 1 --> 2 --> 1
Woo, refresh!

Despite sealing a demon of considerable power, saving his friend's house from getting destroyed, and learning of betrayal from said friend, Hugues wasn't feeling sleepy. Sure, he was exhausted, but not sleepy. The Nevernever always mixed things up for that.

And Nidawi...things were getting to her too. "Nidawi, get in here." Hugues yanked her inside, and gently held her close to him, careful not to crush her or her fragile wings. "Don't feel too bad. I didn't ask you to lay down your life for me, all I did was ask you to spy on someone for me in exchange for some pizza. Delicious as it is, lives are worth more than that. I'm not upset with you, I'm upset that I put you in danger," he said, as he let go of her. "Anyway, I have a job for you now. I've been missing class and it looks like I'm missing more tomorrow. Just need you to stick around during class, let me know what's being taught and bring any homework back here. I helped a few Borrowers move in last month, they can tell you where my classes are, and give you a cozy spot to listen from."

Unfortunately Hugues still was going to need to get up early again to help Cole out with the White Court. That had Hugues nervous. Raiths were going to be around, and Veronica might get involved too, especially since she visited Mr. Speedo. He thought he was more resistant to the Raiths' effects, but it seemed like he wasn't. He went through his notes (and checked on Mitsuo's book), and pulled out an old recipe for this. Stone was firm, unchanging and stoic, and the recipe used it as the base for a charm to give a quick jolt of "stoic-ness" to resist forced changes in the mind. Mainly good for the White Court, but it helped against some warlocks as well, even if it did skirt dangerously close to their own methods. Then again, a lot of Warden methods did.

(New "potion". Stone Stoic Charms. 3-shift Maneuver to give the fragile Aspect "Stoic". I can make this up to 4 uses, using a FP to boost it to 6.)

---

Hugues knocked on Cole's door the following morning like a grumpy child. "Here, I brought presents," he said, putting the bag of charms on the table. "A little something in case the White Court wants in our heads again. There's at least one for each of us. I'll hold on to the rest."

Sipping on a bit of tea and holding back a yawn, he looked up at Cole. "So, what's the plan? Who is gonna be there?"

(Oh. Added Rapport as a new skill.)

WORDS IN THE HEART
CANNOT BE TAKEN
Jenny Hirsch FP: 0->3

Jenny woke up with a start, blinking around in confusion. The room was blandly white, and it took her a moment to place the mechanical beeping and realize she was in a hospital room. Her everything ached, and on further reflection Jenny realized she was sitting on an incredibly uncomfortable 'recliner'. The drat thing must have been forged by some hellspawn demon, because nothing could naturally be this uncomfortable.

Ada was in her hospital bed, looking indecently comfortable. Jackie really had gone all out on the amenities - Jenny hadn't thought that hospitals even had those memory foam mattresses, not to mention what looked like a feather quilt.

Mitsuo, on the other hand, just looked blank. The doctors had said he was in some kind of coma, but the doctors hadn't been able to determine what was causing it. He'd done something with that little demon, and that was the cause of whatever was sapping his soul away now. Jenny was sure of it.

"Don't worry. We'll take care of you, Mitsuo."

As Ada slept, she dreamed. The vision from the stone, the one with Father James and Andy in the parking lot behind the church, played out again. It was exactly the same as before. But she'd prevented this, last night. Hadn't she?

A small, charred hand slipped into hers and Ada looked down. The girl was standing next to her. Her burns were terrible, but there was a soft downy fuzz where her hair had started to grow back in. She was beginning to heal. She pointed up, and Ada looked up with her. The moon was full in the sky.

The moon wasn't full last night. It was still waxing.

Ada woke with a start.

As the dream came to an abrupt end, Ada's eyes slid open. Her breathing sped up, before slowly going back to normal as she began to understand the meaning of what she'd been shown.

It wasn't over yet. It wouldn't be for a little while longer, either. There was still some time before the full moon. How long, she couldn't say for sure, but she'd have to stay alert for a few more days. After the struggle with the demonic plant, spider, and rider yesterday, it seemed easy enough, but there was something strange about it. Something unsettling, enough to give her pause. Leaning forward a little slowly and clumsily due to the effects of her sleep, Ada closed her eyes and rested her face in her hands.

"Why are you showing me this?" She thought, the little girl's visage dancing behind her eyelids, her terrible wounds still vivid in her memory. "What happened to you...and why are you here? What can I do now? What can I do...Sis?". Unable to answer the questions, Ada simply sat on her bed, watching the scene by the lake and the new warning unfold again and again. She didn't know the answer, but she had the feeling it was important...and if not necessary to keep Andy and James safe, then needed for her own peace of mind. Falling backwards onto the bad, Ada let out a long sigh and looked around. She needed to bide her time for now and recover. She needed help...someone she could trust.

"Jenny?" Ada asked, her voice low. "I think I'm going to need another favor."

J.R. - FP: 3

JR sighed as he walked out of the hospital. Due to his low level of magic, he'd been picked as the best choice to drop Mitsuo off. He'd been badly hurt but'd likely live, at least - the bond with the demon would see to that. JR just hoped Mitsuo wasn't too far gone to go back. If Cole could figure out a way to kill the demon without Mitsuo losing it, he'd do it in a second. If the only way to kill the demon was to take out Mitsuo also, well ... the wizard had made his choice and he'd have to deal with the consequences.

The next day, JR takes a taxi to Cole's place in the early afternoon. He wanted to check out the demon's containment, before the meeting. "So, Cole, you get the demons settled in the calaboose?"

Cole nodded to Hugues and took the tokens. "Thanks. Hopefully we won't need them since this is a 'diplomatic mission.'" The Warden made air quotes and sighed. "But with the attack on the yacht, things are going to be tense. I'm not saying you did anything wrong." he said hurriedly. "But the truce has always been uneasy and with what happened to the Reds, the Whites have been touchy lately." He looked down and away, and Huges could sense a serious anger in Cole. Just mentioning the Red Court brought it out.

"New Orleans is still a major power center for the Whites. It always has been, but the Reds held a lot of territory that's now up for grabs. Plus there's intracourt fighting, which you've already seen firsthand. The Skavis have been running the city since a year after Katrina, but the Raiths moved back in just recently. When that big fight under Chicago* killed off the local heads of Skavis the Raiths swooped in and reclaimed the city. It was a coup, and there's a big rift between the two houses here. I'm counting on that, actually. If only one house is involved in the demon summoning, they'd sell the other out in a heartbeat."

*White Night's fight in the Raith Deeps.

Cole led the way downstairs and let JR have a look at the wards. "Don't get too close." he warned. "The big one will hold just about anything. The little one..." Cole shrugged. "Same design but it isn't built into the floor. It would take a wizard level talent to do anything to it though, assuming they could get in here."

Murray hissed inside his cat carrier. He hadn't spoken since Cole trapped him in the circle. It was almost like there was something wrong with him. The only sounds he made were feral animal noises.

WORDS IN THE HEART

Jenny crosses her arms, glaring at Ada. "No. Not unless you tell me what's going on, Ada. You knew something was going on at the Church last night and we found Denny and Mel there, and I know that wasn't just a coincidence. What do you know that I don't, and why won't you just tell me about it?"

Ada sighed, and looked at Jenny for a few brief instants, before averting her gaze. "I told you. I got sources." She said. "I didn't know they were going to be there, though. I misunderstood the tip and it was pure dumb luck that we found out what we know now. Honest." She added, turning her head to look at Jenny again.

Jenny looks down, thinking. "I understand you don't want to tell me about your 'sources', but... don't lie to me." She looks back up at Ada. "You can't even look at me when you're talking. You know you shouldn't be lying about whatever it is, and that's your body's way of telling you that. Please. I'm asking you as a friend, Ada - please be honest with me. What's really going on?"

"...Jen, I can't tell you everything right now. I promised I'd spill it when this was over, and I'm sticking with that. If I tell you a part of the whole story, will that be enough to tide you over until this is done?" Ada quickly raised her hand up before Jenny could say a word. "Don't worry. I'm not gonna lie. Being untruthful or omitting things isn't part of the plan. There's just too much stuff going on to cover it all now, and it might be dangerous too. More than everything already is. How does the offer sound?"

Jenny nods, taking a seat in the recliner of death. "That's... not perfect, but if you can at least tell me something I'd feel a lot better. What did you have in mind?"

"This whole mess doesn't just involve us, the demons, and the white court. There's another party in the middle of all this. They're on our side, more or less, but mostly because they have a score to settle. Made me an offer - a bit of help, and in exchange, getting some payback on whoever's pulling the strings to which those demons are dancing. It's got a catch. It's bound to have one. But so far, the help's come in handy. It's thanks to it that we're all in one piece. It's where my information comes from. Like I said before, I thought the latest tip was meant for that night, but as it turns out I was wrong." Ada sighed. "We need to get ahold of a calendar and take a look at when the moon will be full. It's going down around that time."

"And besides that, there's something...else." Ada said, evasively. She didn't want to talk about the little redheaded girl if she could help it. "Guess you could call it an enigma. It doesn't seem like it's got anything to do with this chaos, as far as I know, but it's important regardless. It's been in the back of my head for a while, since I got these burns." Ada said, putting a hand on her wounds. "Next time you see Hugues, d'you think you could ask him if he's got any material on ghosts? I think it's related to them, but I could use some material to verify if this hunch I've got is correct."

Jenny nods slowly. "That's. Hm. I'm not happy not knowing what this third side is, but it's better than before. Thank you. I'll see what Hughes knows about ghosts, but I don't think I've ever actually seen one." Jenny grabs her bag and stands up, stretching out the new crink in her neck. "And Ada? The full moon is tonight."

Ada placed her hand over her right eye. "It's gonna be a really, really long day." She murmured darkly, after Jenny left the room.

Jenny and Ada piled out of the cab they'd taken to Cole's place, knocking on the door politely.

Cole repeated what he'd told Hugues to JR, Ada and Jenny. "They're going to disarm us when we get there, so don't bring anything inside you're worried about losing. Niell Raith is the head of the White Court in New Orleans, and that's who we're meeting today. I don't know who else is going to make an appearance. The meeting is at Diamond Skies, and..."

A car horn beeps cheerily outside. Everyone looks up through the big picture window. On the curb in front of the office is a van. It is black and red and someone has airbrushed a poorly drawn chinese dragon down the side (Possibly. It could also be a sickly looking koi fish if you squint at it.) It is at least twenty years old. Only one of the wheels still has a hubcap.

A short woman with a platinum blonde perm right out of 1985 skips around the side of the van and up the steps to the door. She is wearing a neon pink spaghetti tanktop, stonewashed jeans, and bright purple pumps. Wraparound sunglasses conceal her eyes, and she's drawn a glitter star over one brow. Her dozens of arm bangles and myriad rings catch the sunlight.

Cole stares. Well everybody stares, but Cole is the only one who recognizes the woman. He opens the door. "Cassandra, come in-"

"Ricky!" The woman yells in heavy british accent, jumping on him and giving him a bear hug. Cole staggers back against the wall.

"Cassie, I can't do that anymore!" The woman didn't seem to hear him. Cole sighed, peeling her off and turning her around to face the room. "Cassie, these are my guests. Everyone, Cassandra Eddington of the White Council."

The woman flips her shades up and smiles. She tosses a keyring to Jenny. It's got the keys to the van outside on it, as well as a red fuzzy rabbit's foot and two or three other somewhat questionable keyring ornaments. "There's yer loaner, mate. 's all we had in the area at the time. Take good care of her." She winked and turned back to Cole, running a finger up his chest. "I've missed you, Ricky."

"No, Cassie." Cole said, grabbing her wrist gently but firmly. "Portal's through the alley."
"Cold, as always." She sighed. "And I can't stay. But after this mess in Georgia gets sorted..."
"Goodbye, Cassie." Cole said firmly. Cassandra dropped her sunglasses back over her eyes and shrugged.
"It's not your decision, is it?" She said, and left. The door banged shut behind her with some finality.

Contacts: //// +1 = 1. Well that's a straight roll if ever there was one.

As a Warden, Hugues had never run into Cassandra himself. But he had read a file with her name in it. The entire Eddington line had been murdered in the opening days of the Vampire War except for one, the youngest daughter who'd been at Edinburgh for her apprenticeship. She'd been assigned a protection detail of Wardens whenever she left for as long as they could spare one, which wasn't long given how quickly things escalated.

---

Warden Cole FP: 1

Cole sighed. Seeing Cassie again brought up memories he'd been trying to bury over the last few weeks. "Exactly two people are allowed to call me Ricky. That woman, and my mother." he said. "Now let's get going."

---

The interior of Jenny's new van was maroon. There were four captain's chairs and a bench seat in the back, so plenty of room for everyone. It was actually pretty comfortable, and the engine turned over without so much as the usual sputter.

The drive to Diamond Skies didn't take long. The nightclub was a marvel of modern architecture. Two stories tall and oval shaped, the upper floor was all glass. Everything from the upstairs bar itself to the balcony railings were made of the same gorgeous clear crystal, and the specially placed lighting made the entire thing glow at night like a lighthouse beacon.

Of course none of that was visible now in the afternoon sunlight, several hours before the club opened. And they weren't headed upstairs to the VIP bar and lounge. Jenny parked in front of the place and everyone got out of the van. A large bouncer-type approached them before they got within ten feet of the door.

"Warden and party of... four. You are expected. May I have your keys?" he asked in a low voice. "For the valet." He gave the van an irritated look.
