Ada duSang - FP: 1 / S: OOOO (P)/OOOO (M) (-2/-4/-6)

Now that she knew where the ghouls were, Ada was tempted to blast them to tiny bits and pieces. It would be easy with her link to the blood that stained them. As she stood up, however, a thought crossed her mind. There was something else she could do. "Everyone can see what you've done. Amakthel."

Across the port, the dead man's blood began to glow, leaving the ghouls exposed to anything Ada's companions could throw at them. Knowing them, this would be over in seconds. Looking at the pool beneath her, she whispered three words. "Make it count."

Lighting up the blood on the ghouls with a maneuver, generating the Aspect Shining Proof of Crime.

Jenny stepped back around the crate, the effect's of Ada's spell clearly illuminating the ghoul. She couldn't throw too many more of those shipping crates around, and this one wasn't doing anything more than presenting a target. A very good target, admittedly, but not one she had to throw that quite that much power around to deal with. Still, with that shipping crate right there...

Jenny grins, hand extended over her head. If the mountain won't come to Muhammad, then Muhammad must go to the mountain. The force bolt erupted out of her hand and flew into the ghoul's side, trying to force him down and sideways into the metal below him.

Lowering his rifle, Rupert nods in satisfaction as the bullet hammers through the Ghoul's skull. Lights from the illuminated ghouls shine in the distant inky blackness, and like a moth to a flame, Rupert jogs forwards, moving carefully to avoid the stray rolling cans, his shoes tapping against the concrete as he moves past Ada, rifle low at his side as he turns the corner. As the lamps around him shatter, he reaches into his satchel and strikes a flare, rolling it forwards to cast flickering red light across the passageway.

Sorry for the delays, let's get back on track here.

Port of New Orleans, Round 3

Jenny's spell smashed the Ghoul hard into the shipping crate, denting the top in and causing another loud screech of metal to echo through the area. But force alone wasn't enough to take down the bruiser this time and it clawed itself out of the dent. It glared right at Jenny, the hot green color of Ada's marking spell stain it's face and entire front slimer green, before Rupert's flare skittered down the hall. Looking up it caught sight of both Rupert and Cole closing fast and the fact that it was badly outnumbered and outgunned dawned on it. With a mighty leap it threw itself to the east, off the crates, and Jenny saw it leap again, although not onto what, as it ran away.

That distant motorboat engine got pretty close but then cut off completely. Weird.

---

The Fat Ghoul spit a green-stained glob on the ground. "Ah, but without insurance, I won't leave at all. And I can't have that..."

He took a step back, then another. The human shield was held very tightly and carefully between him and the cowboy.

Ghoul #2 defends with Athletics: +/-+ +4 = 5. Takes 6 stress, so 4th and a Mild. Supernatural Recovery shrugs the mild off (can do this twice, so 1 of 2) as a supplemental action, and the Ghoul runs away as fast as it can. Athletics: -/+/ +4 = 4.

Jenny's magic spell broke both the northern lights but Rupert's flare reveals more area than they were showing anyways. The Ghouls are still glowing so anyone can pinpoint them but you will need to have clear line of sight to attack them.

Fatghoul is employing his hostage as a Block on all stress with a strength of 4. Breaking the block means killing the hostage.

Port of New Orleans, Round 3, cont.

From up on the shipping crate Cole had a perfectly good view of JR as he flying tackled... well down in behind a bunch of other crates and out of sight. It wasn't much of a leap to figure out that if JR wasn't shooting, he must have found the hostages.

The Warden slid off the container and made a dash for the one next to Jenny. She jumped and scrambled her way up just in time to witness the Fat Ghoul pulling itself up off the ground.

Cole moves towards JR and the hostages, Athletics: /-+/ +3 = 3 Using my "Just like JR!" boost to make that a +5, so I can get her up onto the container.

---

From this close, JR could see the wide leather belt the Fat Ghoul wore, and where the prisoner's chain was connected to it. He could also see that wasn't the only thing clipped to the belt. The Fat Ghoul growled, grabbing at something that looked like a gold-dipped human skull.

"That's where you're wrong." The creature sneered at him. It shook the skull and something rattled inside of it. "You've cost me too much already, cowboy." It grumbled, as it tossed the skull forwards- not at JR but at the two chained prisoners who were still conscious. Both of them recoiled from the object, and it didn't come close to hitting either of them... But when it came to a stop, something inside hissed, and something rattled again. This time it didn't sound like bones. It sounded like...

Twin albino rattlesnakes slithered out from the eye sockets of the skull. They were already within striking distance.

"We'll finish this another night, Counccccil." The Fat Ghoul flipped a finger at the watching Warden, unclipped the prisoner's chain from his belt, and let it fall with a clink.

Fat Ghoul uses a magic item, the Rattling Skull! This one has summoned two very angry venomous snakes. If you don't do something to remove those snakes by Fat Ghoul's next turn, then they're going to strike. They are not technically real so they can be counterspelled as well as killed.

As bullets, magic bursts and fire flew through the air, Ada decided enough was enough. She couldn't remain blind any longer. Fortunately, she knew of a way she could finally see what was going on. Concentrating on her still active blood link, she summoned a small bit of power, and her vision tripled as she saw everything going down from the ghouls' perspectives...or rather, the perspective of the blood on them. When she saw the fat ghoul taunt JR, Ada grit her teeth. "Not a chance, you rotten tub of lard. Zeeth!"

Suddenly, the blood splattering the fat ghoul came to life. Gaining color and substance, it expanded, driving through the port's concrete floor, into nearby crates, and wrapping itself around the ghoul's arms, throat and legs. It was a dizzying feeling and Ada felt as though she was tumbling in all directions at supersonic speeds, but she kept it up, and soon the ghoul had been rendered immobile, unable to run away. Laughing, Ada raised her voice, full of contempt. "Since when do you think you can do something without my permission, you fat son of a bitch? You're gonna pay for every last person you've killed. Richter, do me a favor and cut him the hell up!"

Trying to block the ghouls from moving. The long range block requires 5 power, which Ada can pay for, and her control roll is a whopping +8! A cointoss gives heads, so the spell affects Fatghoul and now he's not going anywhere.

Hugues runs to catch up to Jenny, who gets caught up in the mess on the ground and fails to get very far.

Ada's capture spell goes off and binds Fat Ghoul into place. He lets out a shriek of surprise and anger (and more than a bit of fear.) The second ghoul still marked by Ada's spell abruptly vanishes from view with a splash as it dives into the salty water off the edge of the dock, which clears off the blood and the magic glow as well.

Rupert shuffles forward and tosses his flare, revealing both a boat and three men. The first is the man from the vision that Cole's been calling Slimer, still wearing his hat and trenchcoat. There are two more with him, both still in a middle-sized speedboat.

Slimer reaches into his coat and pulls out something purple and spikey. He throws it at the single stack crate in front of Rupert where it lodges in the wall.

Warden Cole FP:2->1

While she'd have loved to take Ada's orders regarding the trapped Fat Ghoul, there were still some civilians that needed saving first. Cole reached down to the two prisoners. JR might have shot the rattlesnakes but the Skull they crawled out of was still making funny noises and glowing slightly. "Come on!" She yelled. The herbalist went up onto the container without any effort, but the Librarian was a lot heavier and it took quite a bit of effort to get him up. The third man, that JR had knocked out, was still on the ground.

"Are you Council, like he said?" the Librarian asked, before noticing the cloak and sword. "Wait, you're a Warden? Our Warden?"

Cole nodded without looking at the man, eyes still locked on the Skull.

"JR that skull's still active, watch out!"

No sooner had she yelled than the skull's jaw opened up and a fat python wriggled through the mouth. It grew as it emerged, by the time it was done the thing's head was about the side of a dog's.

Fat Ghoul couldn't move, and he knew it. He didn't bother trying. Instead he reached down to the belt and tugged a fat round gourd free. There was a hole about the size of a quarter in it, and he held it up above his head and dumped something that smelled like rotten milk all over himself. He tucked the gourd back onto his belt and grinned maniacally at JR. "Now, we'll see, cowboy."

The snake slithered towards the unconscious man.

---

Since I already know what's up with the Skull I had Cole role his lore to see if he knew. He failed the check (rolled a 4, needed a 5) so he's as clueless as the rest of you. Pulling the hostages out of harm's way, Might: +//- +2 = 2, not quite good enough so he'll blow a FP on "Come Hell or High Water" to yank them to safety. Well two of them anyway.

Fat Ghoul decides not to break Ada's prison spell and uses a second magic item instead, the Milky Gourd.

No one moved so the map stays as it is.

Hearing the mayhem intensify beyond the crates, Ada decided the time to stay back had passed. She was needed in the fight, and fast. As she straightened up and took a step forward, however, her vision blackened, and she felt a rush of dizziness sweep over her. "What...?" She said as she stumbled forward blindly, clutching her head. Soon it was all over, but the mystery of what had just happened still lingered in the back of Ada's mind. "Was that a rush of blood to the head? Maybe I should be more careful with my rituals if that's what happens after casting one."

With a roll of -1 on her Athletics, Ada fails to move horribly. Fortunately, thanks to the houserule concerning minimum movement, she still moves a little closer to the crates near Cole and JR!

Elbridge Hardley - FP: 2->1

Still hidden in the dark of the east side of the dock, outside the flickering pool of light cast by the sputtering flare, Elbridge creeps gingerly forward along the pier. Two more gunshots ring out from his left, followed by Cole shouting something about a skull. The noise hurts his ears, but doesn't bother him; he'd learned well enough how to advance under enemy fire, and it's about to get MUCH louder in any case.

His nose wrinkles as the godawful stench of ghoul is joined by the bouquet of spoiled milk. From the creature's cavalier attitude towards J.R., and the forewarning of the trade in black magic, it's safe to assume some form or another of unpleasant surprise. The devil of such things is always in the details (and sometimes, in the actual devils); Elbridge peers around the corner to take stock of the situation. He is confident that the rest is in capable (or at least enthusiastic) hands.

Lore /--/ +5 = 3 for an Assessment on Ghoul Mojo

It had been difficult to convince his backup to keep quiet in the face of the uproar. Silently, they'd drifted forward to deposit the old wizard on the dock instead of gunning the engine and charging into the fray. Now, they've no such reason for restraint.

A fan turbine gives a strangled roar as it grinds to life.

The actinic flare of a searchlight sends a blinding glare across the water, scattering the shadows.

A signal horn sounds out the first bar of Dixieland.

"Atten-SHUN!" A scruffy man in worn Confederate fatigues stands at the fanboat's prow, barking into a megaphone. Standing at his side are two more beige-clad militiamen, along with another pair wearing Union blues. "On the authority of the Unofficial Civil War Re-Enactment Society of New Orleans, I hereby order you to lower your weapons and submit to boarding!"

If anyone has pointed comments about the authenticity of their uniforms, or their weapons, or indeed their transport itself, they keep them to themselves. After all, that pepper-mill machine gun at the aft looks entirely period-appropriate...not to mention very, very functional.

The gout of flame from the tiny enraged wizard actually got Slimer to shift to the side as it scorched the metal of the box next to him, but the trench coated man remained unburned. Warden Cole FP:1->2

JR could keep shooting snakes all night but Cole was pretty drat sure that the Skull wasn't going to stop spitting them out until it's owner gave the order or died, and maybe not even then. She looked at the sword in her hand. Cleaving the Skull in two with a counterspell was a last resort. Inventive dark wizards liked to hide traps in their creations, and they could be anything. Explosions were the standard, but some of the stories they told in Warden Training included would be heroes instantly aging 70 years or being sucked into a portal to space.

Given her luck with that kind of thing, it wasn't something she wanted to test.

She paused for a moment, uncertain. Let her eyes take in the rest of the battlefield, which she had almost a full view of from on top of the container. There had to be a better way, what was she missing?

Then she realized that they were on a pier with all the running water in the world right in front of them. Galvanized, she jumped down, knotting the cloak around her hands so that it wouldn't touch skin when she picked it up. Then she grabbed the skull, dropped it, and football punted it over the crates and out towards the open water. Her dainty high heeled sandals still had the full weight of steel toed work boots behind them, and the glowing skull lofted in a perfect arc as it sailed out of sight.

There was a quiet second as everyone watched it fly. But there was no splash. Instead, there was a thud, and a rattle, as it landed on the roof of the Willamette's cabin. Cole covered her eyes with one hand.

"Oh.... poo poo."

Fat Ghoul blinked, then his mouth opened in a huge grin and he started laughing uncontrollably. He couldn't move very much, but Ada's hold on him was fading and he still had a few surprises up his... On his belt.

Ada duSang - FP: 1 -> 0 / S: OOOO (P)/XXOO (M) (-2/-4/-6)

Before Cole could reply, the crate behind him shook as an explosion could be heard coming from the other side and a shadow soared through the air. Moments later, Ada came down on Fat Ghoul hard, slamming an outstretched foot surrounded by a swirl of crimson against his chest.

"Were you saying something about a girl's kicks, you fat piece of trash?" She asked, her voice mocking as she got up from the floor and she shook her head to shake off a brief burst of dizziness. "drat. Using an explosion to get around isn't as easy as it looks in movies." She was surprised it had worked, really. Seeing that she wouldn't be able to climb up the tall crates in time, she'd taken a running start, gathered the air in a spot just below her and compressed into a small spot, then ignited it just as she jumped up. It had worked just like a car's engine, but on a much larger scale. Realizing what she'd just done, Ada couldn't help but feel a surge of pride. "Looks like learning a thing or two about fire paid off in the end."

Casting a spell to get over the crate and attack the Fat Ghoul. Using 4 power to overcome the obstacle and funneling another 2 to damage, Ada rolls a +4. Spending a Fate Point on Bloody Crazy and Bloody Minded to up the result by 2, enough to cast the spell successfully.

WORDS IN THE HEART

Jenny Hirsch FP: 2 P: OOO M: XOXO

Jenny glances down at the crate next to her, looking at the urchin that Slimer had placed on the crate near her. The thing had an [y]eye[/i], which was swiveling around as she stared at it. The spines of the urchin were long, but not pointing towards her but rather to the other urchin that he'd placed. Weird. Jenny considers blasting it off with a shot of magic, but then the the two men on the boat open up with submachine guns. Jenny ducked, focusing in her power and then releasing it towards the two thugs. Not with any physical presence - she knew better than to risk that - but with enough pure magical power to shut down those guns.

Lore +2 -++/ = 3 to ID the urchin. Hexing the thug's guns at Discipline /++/ +5 = 7. Sorry for the slow/:effort: post, I feel like poo poo this weekend and I'm having trouble with it.

Rupert Singh - FP:2

The geometric symbols painstakingly engraved on the brown leather of Rupert's belt glow with a faint green light, flowing towards the plain buckle as the thug's begins to fire a barrage at the old wizard. Ducking back towards the cover of the crate as the rounds clatter against the surrounding shipping crates, he taps the glowing buckle and a smooth disc of energy flares into existence in the air between Rupert and the thug. Most of the shots bounce off it, but one manages to smash through a weak point in the energy disc and, robbed of much of it's strength, hammers into the wizard's shoulder with the force of a thrown rock.

Rubbing his stiff shoulder, Rupert ducks back out and aims another shot at the thug he already shot, aiming for a kill shot at the man's neck. Pulling the trigger, he fires with a loud crack.

Port of New Orleans. Round 5 cont.

Ada's kick drove fat ghoul's back into a crate, but he did not fall. And worse, the stinking milky fluid was also sticky. Her shoe stuck to his chest where she'd booted him. He latched onto her leg with both hands and sneered at her. "I said they are weak." He grunted and swung her up and to the side, smacking her off the metal container wall.

Fat Ghoul rolled a 5 for defense (I cannot find the roll, so if you want me to reroll this I can,) so the kick lands, but he's defending this turn(+2), so it does no damage. The Milky Gourd's effect is basically that it catches and distributes the force of one attack. So it'll stop a bullet. Or a rocket kick.
Fat Ghoul finally has a chance to attack someone! Using Might, +//- +4 = 4, +2 damage from Inhuman Strength if it hits.

----

At Jenny's command both the shooters found their machine guns jammed. The pair glanced at each other. As one, they dropped the machine guns. The uninjured one ducked out of sight, rummaging through one of the compartments inside the boat. The injured thug reached into his coat and pulled out a six shooter that JR would be proud of, but Rupert made sure he'd never get the chance to use it. The veteran's aim was solid, but the boat rocked on the water just enough... The slug rammed through the side of his neck, missing the major blood vessels.

If he'd been a monster, it would have been a flesh wound. He wasn't. The thug dropped like a sack of bricks and didn't get up again.

Thug defends! +/+- +3 = 4, +1 body armor. Takes 3 which forces the moderate. I'm going to consider human opponents "Taken Out" at moderate so Thug 1 is down.

----

Meanwhile, on the Willamete...

The snake-spewing skull had landed right on the roof of the cabin, which meant somebody had to go up after it. That someone ended up being Jimmy and he was really not happy about it.

"What do you want me to do with the drat thing?" The young man asked. Snakes didn't usually bother Jimmy, but the big white cobra staring at him as it coiled around the glowing skull was more unnerving than snakes usually got.

"Jimmy would you just kick it off the side? Wizard can go fish it up later if he wants it." The captain yelled up at him.

"There's a cobra on it, how'm I supposed to kick it?"

"Well then shoot it Jimmy! Jesus, do I have to do everything?"

"Sure and if I shoot it, who's going to repaint the cabin?"

"You are!"

Sighing wearily, Jimmy pumped his shotgun and blew the snake to smithereens, then calmly kicked the Skull over the edge and into the water. It sank out of sight with a splash. He kicked at the bullet scars in the paint with one boot, shaking his head.

He turned around to go back down the ladder, and that's when the second ghoul struck.

I'm considering Ghoul 2 to be an Obstacle and the Willamete needs 2 turns to deal with it. There will be a roll at the end of the next turn to decide how it turns out.

----

Slimer chuckled to himself as he removed the third and final spiked urchin from his coat. He didn't seem to care that his man was down, or that he was basically alone against 2 and a half wizards. "I don't know if I should skin that ghoul or pay him double..."

He threw the urchin, this one over their heads and back towards the corpse of the librarian. It stuck somewhere out of sight.

"Reeeee!" The spiked thing nearest them suddenly made a high pitched whine, almost painful to the ears.

"Reeeeeeee!" The one near the others answered with the same sound, and now it was painful.

"Reeeeeeeeeeeee!" The third one, behind them all, joined the earsplitting chorus. The sound increased in pitch, increased in frequency, increased in pain, until it passed the range of human hearing. But even in though it had gone silent, the reverberations were still something each and every person on that dock could feel in their chest. It was inside them, squeezing and choking and making it difficult to breathe...

Slimer broke the quiet with another laugh.

"To think, I only came here for the usual dregs. And now I have a complement of Council Wizards at my mercy."

If that was true was yet to be decided, but one thing was certain: The dock had been cut off from all magic.

Slimer is finally able to activate his trump card, the "Tri-Urchin Magic Purge". No magic of any kind (including items!) can be cast inside a Purged zone. (Which is the entire map for this fight.) Magic currently in effect, ends (temporarily if an ongoing effect like Cole's curse.) Purge has a 3 turn set up, and you will have to figure out how to remove it yourselves.

"Send in Boxbot!"

Elbridge Hardley - FP: 1

Recognising the danger the instant the first urchin begins to screech, Elbridge covers his ears. It's still an altogether unpleasant experience, rather like running full-tilt uninvited across a threshold, but at least he still has his eardrums. Bringing a gunboat seems to have been a wise decision - the old wizard had expected at most the inconvenience of working around saltwater, but for the enemy to have a Trichinodweomer...

He shakes his head. Of course, with Midas bankrolling the operation, they aren't exactly fretting over their budget. In any event, their first priority has gone from 'capture' to 'survival'. Retreat and regrouping would be safest, but it would also mean nothing to show for the night's efforts.

No. It will take more than this to get the better of Elbridge Hardley. First principles: the urchins' counterspell is tied to their shrieking, all three are necessary to sustain the effect, and the cargo containers are serving to amplify the sound. Therefore...

Elbridge inhales, then bellows as loudly as he can over the cacophony. "J.R.! SINGH! SHOOT THE CONTAINERS! NOT THE URCHINS, THE CONTAINERS!"

Elbridge rolls Lore to assess the urchins: -++/ +5 = 6. Aspect revealed: "METAL BOXES!!!" Let's fight their music...with our music!

"Ada!"

Cole staggered under the sonic assault and found himself leaning hard against one of the crates until the initial barrage had faded out of hearing range. When his head cleared he looked around. It had hit everyone, including Fat Ghoul, who was crouched down with his clawed hands over his ears, screaming expletives.

He knew what had happened. The air had that same ozone-burned scent as it had in the Library, but much stronger. Their magic was cut off. The situation had just turned against them.

"El, there's no point! We can't stay here!" he yelled back at the old wizard. "We got what we came for, get the boat over here so we can leave!"

Hearing his own voice again almost hurt, because he knew already that it wouldn't last. He glared at Fat Ghoul. "No more tricks, rear end in a top hat. We're going to have a little talk over on the boat, or you die right here."

"Noooooo!" Fat ghoul moaned. "That wretched Fomor dog betrayed me! It isn't fair!" He didn't bother looking at Cole, only having eyes for JR and JR's guns.

Hugues let out a painful shriek as the urchin things let out their cries, and kept quivering as the sound escaped his hearing. He snapped out of it a little later than everyone else, since his hearing range was slightly larger than an adults, not to mention he felt the entire thing shaking his soul. It felt like when the mirror had sucked him in, the fragile bond holding the soul to this empty vessel faded away...

But it stayed put. His soul didn't have anywhere to go, nothing was trying to take it away. It just felt like it could slide out of him at any moment. "Jenny...we need to get out of here," he rasped out, stepping backwards to her. He held out his white plastic shield with his right hand, putting it between him and Slimer. I realized something after the fact, which is that you can't make Intimidate rolls with Guns unless you have a stunt for it. Thankfully JR's Intimidate is +2. Recalculated, the result is exactly the same (Intimidate roll of 1, FP'd to 3, vs Discipline roll of 2.) so nothing needs to change on JR's end.

Port of New Orleans, Round 6

Warden Cole FP: 2

Ada started to pick herself up, and Cole released the breath he'd been holding. She'd hit the container hard and he'd been worried sick. But he'd heard Hugues' scream too and he knew they didn't have time to waste. He glanced up at the pair of former prisoners on top of the container. "I bet that chain fell off a second ago, hurry and toss it down here."

Staring wide-eyed, the librarian tossed the shiny metal links down. He looked like he wanted to say something about the Warden's abrupt gender-malfunction but he didn't get the chance. Cole caught the silver chain with his free hand. Even deprived of magic it was slick and cool to the touch. Faerie-work, if the runes inscribed along the links were any indication. He'd seen the type before. Anti-magic bindings weren't cheap. Fat Ghoul must have been trafficking in gifted mortals for a while, or been planning to.

Cole pointed his sword at the miserable creature. "You're coming with us, bound, if you want to live. We don't need magic to kill you, chuckles, and you know it."

Cole gets daring and attempts an Intimidate maneuver on a flat roll: +-/+ = 1
Fat Ghoul defends with Discipline: -+-- +1 = -1. Success! Let's call it "Chains for the Captor"

----

The Fat Ghoul flexed his claws, sizing up the opposition one last time. No magic meant they were only humans, soft and delicious. The girl was still climbing to her feet within easy reach. Surely he could kill her in an instant... But the Cowboy's guns and the Warden's sword would destroy him if he did so, and if there was one thing the wretched creature held dear it was his own skin.

A soft whine escaped his lips. "Swear you won't harm me."

"No." JR and Cole said at exactly the same time.

The Ghoul bared his teeth in panic. They wanted something, they must, or he would already be dead. What could he offer them? What would get him safely free?

"Ah! The pixie! It is yours, yes? I know! I know where it is!"

Fat Ghoul attempts to counter with a navel-gaze Rapport maneuver, but it fails. (---/ +2 = -1)Getting him to go quietly requires him to take a Moderate mental consequence. 3 bubbles and Disc +1 are his stats, you can attack with Intimidate.

Ada duSang - FP: 0 / S: OOOO (P)/XXOO (M) (-2/-4/-6)

As her head bounced against the wall of the container, Ada felt momentarily dazed. Falling to the floor, she struggled to pull herself up and get on her feet again, when the cries of the urchin choir hit her hard. Falling on her knees again, Ada's brain was clouded with panic as she felt the song choking her, pinning her down, taking away a part of her she'd grown so dependent on. Her magic was gone. The fire in her veins had grown cold...

...And then Ada went cold. As she slowly and methodically pulled herself together, Ada remained only dimly aware of the conversation between JR, Cole and the ghoul. What had they done? How dare they take away her birthright, the craft she'd worked so hard to understand? Someone was going to pay a dear price for this insult. It was then that the ghoul's words finally broke through the haze of anger and coldness at last:

"Swear you won't harm me."

Before Cole and JR could reply to the ghoul's attempt at blackmailing them with Nidawi's whereabouts, Ada spoke.

"I swear it. I promise I won't harm you." Standing up, Ada swayed a little, and as she regained her balance, she fixed the ghoul with such a threatening glance that it burnt him with the coldness of ice. "But that doesn't mean you and I are done with each other, don't you agree?" Slowly, Ada began taking short, measured steps toward the ghoul, like the paces of a predator approaching a defenseless prey. "You're a wretched, pathetic excuse for a ghoul. You've been given simple jobs again and again, and you haven't been able to get even a single one done right. Even your kind would be disgusted by the prospect of associating with you." Pausing for a moment, Ada looked at him straight in the eyes. "If you don't give up and come with us without demands, I'm not going to harm you. I'm going to unmake you. I'm going to tear down everything that makes you who you are, and rebuild you into something that won't think of hurting others, that won't lift a finger to do violence on the undeserving. I will remake you into someone new, and when I am done..." Leaning closer, Ada whispered the words, such that only Fat Ghoul could hear them. "...You won't even remember the filth that you are now." Turning around Ada walked away, snapping her fingers as she did so. "Come with us now. We don't have any more time to waste on you."

Rolling Intimidation to convince Fatghoul to come along quietly. Result is ++-+, which added to base skill rating of +2 makes +4. Fatghoul's defense is a measily -1, so he takes a Moderate consequence and is taken out!

With a sigh, he pushes himself up with a free hand, slowly opening his eyes, just as the thug takes a bead and fires the razor sharp harpoon at him. With a look of fear in his suddenly wide eyes, he spins around the corner of the container, the spear slamming where he was seconds ago, embedding in the container with a thunk.

“Oh, you’ll find out. Wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise.” He turned those milky eyes towards the boat. “Get that thing fixed, now.” The thug grunted and vanished into the hull. “Now then. Put the gun down and come quietly. I don’t need to hurt any of you… Unless you resist.”

Jenny smiles, projecting a calm confidence that she doesn’t feel. I need to get a reaction out of him.. “I don’t think so. Did you really think capturing Council wizards would be that easy? Thank you for letting us get a closer look at your magic dampener, though. The support staff have been dying to get their hands on some that are still in working condition.”

“All living things die, sorceress. Your staff will find nothing but coral bones on an empty pier in an hour’s time.” He chuckled. “Usually, no. It can take weeks of preparation. But when a fish throws itself into my net, I don’t ask questions.”

Jenny raises an eyebrow. “And that doesn’t surprise you at all, that so many fish would hurl themselves into your net so willingly? Did you think we wouldn’t notice what was going on? Did you really think you’d get away with this?”

“I always have.” Something popped beneath the coat, like he was cracking his neck. “And I’ve been doing this… for a very long time.”

Jenny rolls her eyes, tensing up her legs. “Of course you have. But we’ve always known about - run.” Jenny spins on her heel and takes off through the crates, dragging Hugues behind her. She grabs Rupert with her free hand, dragging him along behind her as well.

"Cole, the van keys, if you please?"

"Good thinking!" The Warden pulled the key ring out of his jeans. The old ornaments from its time as a Council vehicle had been removed, replaced with the chubby rubber Mystery Machine that he'd gotten for Christmas. "Hey, Library guy! Go with them!" He threw the keys up to the robed man, who caught them.

"You sure? There's..."

"Go!"

Librarian and Herbalist jumped down off the container, the former holding the keys out like a peace offering to the fleeing wizards.

----

On the Willamette...

The Ghoul growled as it sprang, and Jimmy fell off the ladder in surprise. It saved his life, because there was no way he'd have been able to dodge that pounce without good old gravity on his side. The Ghoul's claws shredded the varnished wood like tissue as it turned on him.

"CAP'N THERE'S A GHOUL ON THE SHIP!" Jimmy yelled at the top of his lungs before he even tried to stand up.

"Go on boys, handle it!" Captain Bigsby hollered, and the two men who had been about to man the old fashioned machine gun on the prow found themselves reassigned to Ghoul Removal. The old man had a feeling that he would need more than just guns if he wanted to get rid of the pest though, and floated the ship towards Elbridge on the dock as quick as he could, whistling to get the old Wizard's attention.

Man VS Ghoul wasn't going so well. Rifles cracked (and took out several of the ornamental brass fittings, much to Jimmy's dismay,) but neither managed to land a shot on the Ghoul. Quick as a cat, it leapt at one of the pair and the man went down screaming.

----

Slimer didn't seem at all surprised when Jenny made to flee. There wasn't any fun without a chase, was there?

Once more he reached into his coat, this time pulling out a dark purple sea sponge. He hefted it and threw it as far as he could forward. It squelched as it hit the cement close to Rupert's hiding spot.

Then it puffed up like a balloon and squirted something noxious and black into the air. The effect was instant and immediately recognizable to a military man like Rupert. Tear Gas, or something similar enough as to make no difference. The chemicals were unaffected by the anti-magic barrier, but at least they probably weren't intended to kill... Right?

Slimer throws a tear gas grenade! Weapons: +/-- +4 = 3, which is enough to last 1 turn.

The Fomor's hostages are free, a person of interest has been taken prisoner, and the Willamette appears to have a slight ghoul problem. Discretion, better part of valour, etc. At the very least, it should be easier to think once they're clear of that dreadful noise.

And yet, it bothers Elbridge to think that they could have learned so much more, if only he'd arrived a little sooner. The Council's dearth of knowledge regarding the Fomor is nothing short of shameful, and in wars of intrigue every last scrap makes a difference. Thinking quickly, he snatches a prybar from a wooden pallet and swings for the nearest urchin, dislodging several of its spines and the entirety of its eyeball. Not wanting to press his luck any further, the wizard gathers his specimens and drops them hastily into sample phials as he leaps for the boat.
