Don't worry. They're just digging themselves deeper at this point. Just think how people like that will feel in 10 years when approval for SSM is over 70%.

The numbers do look pretty good overall though. I don't think we'll win in every state, but I won't be at all surprised if we do. Public opinion really has changed for the better.

No I meant more along the lines of the urban/rural partisan split. As I understand it, the urban areas are more left leaning, and at the same time had longer queues to vote, so are the last to report.

Do people in the US automatically think "black" when someone says "inner city"? Sorry for the confusion.
Yes, it's quite euphemistic.

Congrats to everyone in all four states!

The pure unadulterated RAGE from the right when same-sex marriage is legalized will be absolutely delicious to watch. I'd be sad, but gently caress YOU.
Unfortunately, they won't flail around as impotently as we would hope. This will be a moment when certain extreme-right elements would perceive themselves as being truly cornered in an "alien" culture. I would expect to see things like states such as Alabama and Mississippi calling for secession, and not in the quaint little online petition way that they have been here post-election.

The rituals and celebrations lines is also funny, considering how many gay marriage opponents mistakenly think that legal gay marriage would force their church to perform gay marriages, when all it changes is who is considered married under the law.
I think that this is actually a larger sticking point for the "anti" crowd than a lot of people realize. I'm pretty sure that most of them don't understand that what we're fighting for is in most cases simply and expanded legal definition rather than an ubiquitous "holy matrimony under the eyes of god in a church in front of an evangelical preacher or catholic priest". In fact, the ignorance a lot of people have on this particular point has been consciously exploited by groups like NOM, the Mormons, etc.

Not too surprised by this, as he was one of the more moderate candidates and previously supported civil unions. Still, it's nice to have more Republicans supporting LGBT rights so it doesn't feel like a "one-party issue."

It's actually a bad thing if you're a progressive that wants to keep them out of power. As long as Republicans continue to stand against the inexorable tide of progress on this issue, the more toxic their particular brand will remain and the longer they'll remain out of power. :ssh:

Kudos to the man personally, but I bet Huntsman will be excommunicated by his party over this.

This is the latest in the French right's vicious campaigns against pro-gay politicians. The head of the French Assembly was mailed gun powder last month, and two socialist legislators were sent letters containing threats to murder them and their families (Oooh you'll LOVE my, (ah-ah-ah) Christian Love!). According to the article, a poll came out today showing that 67% of the French public want the savagery to stop because "France is ready to move on." :unsmith:

Unfortunately, that means that 1/3 of those polled are not yet themselves ready to "move on". :(

Voter turnout skews older in years without a Presidential election. So it seems like a poor strategy for them to not wait until 2016. Especially since a loss next year would mean they'd have to wait a while to put it on the ballot again, to avoid knee-jerk "they won't shut up about this" opposition.

For both Same Sex Marriage and Pot Legalization, it's ill advised to even attempt to make progress in the midterm elections. Only the elderly reliably bother to show up for elections that don't have POTUS on the ballot.

Btw, I keep seeing a lot of pessimistic expectations for the upcoming SCOTUS ruling. I think a lot of people are going to be pleasantly surprised when it comes in. :)

What really happens is that they all see it plain as day, but no one dares to mention it out of fear that everyone else will think that their mind is full of impure thoughts. That's how repressed religious people work. Take this for example:

Not one of them had the balls to say "Ummm, guys? We have a double entendre on our hands here". So they ended up looking like idiots that are completely lacking in self-awareness, just like the FRC.

Look, I have two daughters who have not known a man; let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please; only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.” - Genesis 19:8

This verse makes literally zero sense unless "to know" means "to have sex with," thus it is clear that the mob was asking to have sex with the angels. It couldn't mean anything else.

I remember reading that in Genesis as well. It's pretty clear that that is exactly what it means, especially in light of Sodom & Gomorrah's "historical reputation". It couldn't mean anything else. Trying to interpret it in any other way is a bizarre stretch that smacks of an agenda. We all know perfectly well that most, if not all, of the writers of the Old & New Testaments weren't exactly sex positive. :)

Just like it says n the article, his aggressive tax cutting has put the state in such colossally deep financial poo poo that it's an obvious ploy to draw attention away from Kansas' economy. I'm surprised the Cubs haven't signed on to that; being the first (only?) major American sports team to have an openly gay owner and was amongst the first to try to market towards LGBT people a bit. Although they've been very, very poo poo the last few years so the Cubs doing anything isn't really headline news compared to the Patriots and the San Francisco Giants.

It was already pointed out, but the Cubs are owned by the Ricketts family, who started Ameritrade. The eldest son(Pete) is currently the Governor of Nebraska, and he's pretty far right.

With the numbers, shittier people would probably say it's their fault for being gay or whatever. I imagine it's the latter.

I've noticed that there are lot of Christians who aren't actually bad people but who have bad people opinions. It's mostly because they're dealing with abstract ideas. They're okay with being against the abstract idea of gay people, but if you introduce them to actual gay people who are good human beings, they're backed into a corner. Either they decide that there are exceptions to the rule or, especially if they have to deal with many 'exceptions', they might realize that their opinion is still spreading hate for people who don't deserve it.

It's crowd mentality in reverse. It's much easier to hate an abstract crowd than it is to hate specific people in that crowd. It's nice that Cythereal's church isn't just taking the exception route like many of them do.

I hate to say it, but that's pretty much a hallmark of conservative thinking on most social and economic issues. Conservatives absolutely hate your group(poor people, gays, etc) in the abstract, but are then forced to truly examine those inculcated biases once they actually meet you face to face.
