I SHALL NOT USE MY
HOOVES AS HANDS

The 1990s and early 2000s featured a plethora of melodramas geared towards teenagers.

Check your embarrassment and shame at the door. In this thread, we'll gladly talk about these teen-focused melodramas that we'll never admit to real-life friends we actually watched and have invested interest. So whether you want to remissness about your favorites or watch for the first time, this thread is for you.

Shows that are on topic for this thread include....

Dawson's Creek

I don't wanna wait, for our lives to be over!
Dawson, Joey, Jenn, and Pacey rocked the late 1990s with their big words and adult problems. While Dawson dreams of being the next Spielberg, the audience wonders for six seasons who Joey will pick -- Pacey or Dawson. Oh and Jenn is in the show too, but is sadly given lovely plot lines.

Beverly Hills 90210

Focuses on the lives of a group of rich students attending Beverly Hills High School.

The OC

Ryan, a troubled teen, joins the Cohen family and learns first-hand what it's like to be part of the wealthy, upper-class neighborhood of Newport Beach, Orange County, California. Those of us who actually live in Orange County (including yours truly) cringe as to how we're portrayed.

One Tree Hill

Follows the lives of a group of High School students in North Carolina - importantly the Scott brothers, whose rivalry is just as intense on the Basketball Court as it is off. Their father is portrayed as an excellent Disney villain.

Roswell

Responsible for launching the careers of Katherine Heigl and Emily De Ravin, the show centered around a group of aliens disguised as teenagers.

Pretty Little Liars

Four friends band together against an anonymous foe who threatens to reveal their darkest secrets, whilst unraveling the mystery of the murder of their best friend. There's also a student/teacher relationship.

Veronica Mars

After her best friend is murdered and her father is removed as county sheriff, Veronica Mars dedicates her life to cracking the toughest mysteries in the affluent town of Neptune.

Gossip Girl

A mysterious blogger spills the gossip on a group of upper East-side teens in NYC.

There are so many more that listing them on this post would be too long. These include: My So Called Life, Degrassi, Popular, and others! So as long as the show is geared towards teenagers, is a melodrama and you watched it and wanted to discuss -- then this place is for you!

Since this thread is mostly a retrospective, all plot details are allowed to be posted without spoiler tags. It's been a few years since most of this stuff aired - let's just chat about it.

I will be searching for my soulmate in this thread.

But seriously, thank god for 90210 for spawning this genre of television so that I could spend countless hours of my life engrossed in melodramatic plot twists and teenagers' love stories. Even with Veronica Mars my most powerful memories of ~Veronica and Logan~. It's a disease for which I do not want a cure.

Hi Sophia -- this thread is definitely for people like us!

Is it sad that sometimes I feel more invested in fictional television relationships than those I have in real life? I root for the little ships that can or could and when they do happen, it's amazing. Pacey/Joey was the first time I experienced this, and it's continued on for the last 15 years or so with Dan/Blair on Gossip Girl.

If it weren't for Dawson's Creek, we wouldn't have this gorgeous gem:

That gif made me go IMDB to see what James Van Der Beek has been up to since Dawson's went off the air.

Michelle Williams - nominated for awards for her movie roles
Katie Holmes - married Tom Cruise
Joshua Jackson - lead on Fringe
James Van Der Beek - it looks like smaller TV roles here and there

Man, Dawson loses out even in real life. Poor guy.

Also - dear god the 90 hair on the 90210 kids. Those are some follicle hate crimes.

I understand the sentiment for underdogs, but I don't know how anyone in their right mind could root against Chuck/Blair. Out of every teen drama created their relationship is just... perfect.

My favorite has always been Veronica Mars, and I don't feel the slightest bit of shame admitting my love for it in mixed company.

Also, one other show that would fit the thread is The Secret Life of the American Teenager.

From Seventh Heaven creator Brenda Hampton, Secret Life follows teenager Amy Jurgens and her struggling to balance pregnancy/motherhood and high school. As can be imagined about a show dealing with pregnancy this heavily, pretty much every plot line ends with "and then they hosed."

I'm debating starting a Dawson's Creek re-watch and posting my thoughts every couple of episodes. I'm intrigued to see just how different the show is now that I'm almost 30. Is Michelle Williams really the break-out star? Why did Dawson not go on to other roles after staring as the main character? And why the hell was Meredith Monroe cast as Andie when she was 30? We're treading into Max Casella territory here when he was on Doogie Howser. Guy was in his late 20s playing a 16 yr old along-side Neil Patrick Harris.

I did this not too long ago and I'm not sure if it's my getting older (the DC pilot was my 15th birthday) but Jen is now my favorite character. What's odd is that title has changed as the years have gone on. Back when it was first on, I was of course in love with Joey for obvious reasons. A couple years later during a rewatch, I shifted perspective and completely identified with Pacey. On my latest viewing, however, Jen struck me as a classic tragic character that sort of transcended the show. I think at the time she was just underrated.

And in terms of characters playing older than they are, I know it happens a lot on teen dramas but I recently saw that Jack McBrayer is about to turn 39. I know on 30 Rock he's supposed to be immortal but still... freaky.

This would be very entertaining. Unlike most shows I love I've only seen Dawson's Creek once (I obsessively watch my favorite shows over and over again on DVD and online. Don't ask how many times I've watched Buffy The Vampire Slayer) so after all this time I only vaguely remember what happened.

He tried to do two serious indie movies, one was Rules of Attraction and the other one was Storytelling. I think the show may have still been on, but I'm not sure. Anyway Rules of Attraction didn't do well financially, and his storyline in Storytelling was cut. I think after that his career just kinda died.

If I'm not mistaken, Katie Holmes and James Van Der Beek (but especially Katie Holmes) had the 'better' careers for a while. Joshua Jackson didn't do anything notable until Fringe (and that's a huge period of time in between) and Michelle Williams got a career when she was in Brokeback Mountain.

I'm trying to remember, was Degrassi the one where the writers basically tried to top one-another to see who could poo poo on those kids' lives harder? It got amazingly over the top after a while as I recall. I could be thinking of another show though.

Yeah, they had a show, but in my opinion it was just wrong. No one could really bring the magic of the Wakefields to the screen, no matter how blonde they were.

Gossip Girl is the show that I have tried to quit maybe 3 times but it keeps bringing me back in. I can't even watch 10 minutes of it without wanting to know what is happening with those crazy cats. I wish I knew what alchemy there is in that show in particular that is so compelling to me, where a show like Degrassi can't hold me even though it is arguably better. The world may never know.

Also the first two seasosn of Veronica Mars are some of the best seasons ever, and the creator of it went on to make another amazing show Party Down. Speaking of that it is almost time to rewatch Veronica Mars

I happened to stumble on this show flipping channels and watched it and now I DVR it and watch it when i can. Holy poo poo this is the worst show in terms of "teaching lessons" to teenagers about sex and consequences. Let me go through one of the plot lines for you:

-Girl has sex with boy while dating another boy, gets pregnant, dumps boyfriend to get with the father and leaves kid with parents so they can take care of him 95% of the time and they don't mind. Girl then decides to move out and live with her boyfriend (who is a senior in high school) in his apartment (because for some reason a high school dude with a part time job at a sausage store can afford an apartment while his lesbian mother is in prison). Said boy still bangs other chicks behind girl's back because said girl won't give it up anymore.

There's like 4 other story lines with the ancillary characters that are just as ridiculous. It's like Melrose Place for teenagers.

I watched DC for one reason and one reason only - Katie Holmes. God I wanted to punch Dawsons stupid face so much, the guy literally has a woman delivering herself via ladder! At the time I didn't think any highschool guy would have any angst about going for it.

I legitimately believe that Dawson's Creek was one of the top 50 shows of all time. I generally rewatch the whole thing every year or so. Yes, even the seventh season.

Season rankings:

3
4
1
5
6
7
2

Season 2 was just awful. They really beat up on my favorite character, Jen Lindley(who I still to this day have a huge crush oneven though she's dead), and I always found Andie annoying as hell. Jack became a better character in later seasons though.

And I'm not ashamed to admit that I tear up at least once every three episodes, and bawl at least once per season.

And Joey was right to pick Pacey.

I can't believe One Tree Hill is still on air, 9th season! . I think i stopped watching after the show started going really dumb with The OC style music and live performances poo poo. I think the last episode i watched before stopping was the one with the goddamn dork from Fall Out Boy (3rd season?).

I though Gossip Girl would be another The OC for me but each and every character turned out to be so dumb and out of touch with reality that it made me cringe after the intial season. I have to confess that i am mad jelly of Chucks fashion sense.
