He tried to do two serious indie movies, one was Rules of Attraction and the other one was Storytelling. I think the show may have still been on, but I'm not sure. Anyway Rules of Attraction didn't do well financially, and his storyline in Storytelling was cut. I think after that his career just kinda died.

If I'm not mistaken, Katie Holmes and James Van Der Beek (but especially Katie Holmes) had the 'better' careers for a while. Joshua Jackson didn't do anything notable until Fringe (and that's a huge period of time in between) and Michelle Williams got a career when she was in Brokeback Mountain.

Joshua Jackson remembers were he came from as he has Paceycons every year at the comic con, where he reads Pacey fanfiction(that he wrote). Also I hate to say it but Michelle Williams career exploded when her husband died.

Also the first two seasosn of Veronica Mars are some of the best seasons ever, and the creator of it went on to make another amazing show Party Down. Speaking of that it is almost time to rewatch Veronica Mars

Also Felicity is responcible for releasing JJ Abrams on the world.

Wait, wait... is this for real? He literally writes Dawsons Creek fanfic about a character he used to play?

I watched DC for one reason and one reason only - Katie Holmes. God I wanted to punch Dawsons stupid face so much, the guy literally has a woman delivering herself via ladder! At the time I didn't think any highschool guy would have any angst about going for it.

Always regretted not seeing Veronica Mars past season 2, but from the sounds of it was pretty average anyway?

I watched religiously for about a season, right around the time Rick went crazy and shot everyone, by the time JT died, I was out of it though. Would I be completely lost trying to get back into it? I miss the wacky melodrama.

Also, I feel like Freaks and Geeks doesn't belong in this thread, mostly because it's legit a TV Classic.

Veronica Mars is also really good and if we had a noir thread it would fit in that.

That's one of the little things Veronica Mars did that I loved: they had an episode about a kid that she suspected was involved in some crimes because he had a room full of mall katanas and throwing stars, and it turns out he was just a fat harmless dork that loved videogames and Kurosawa movies.

Really, I wouldn't even count Veronica Mars as teen melodrama, it was more like a good detective show that just happened to feature teenagers. And it managed to overturn just about every trope in the genre: her best friend is a guy but there's zero sexual tension or will she/won't she and instead they're honestly just friends that happen to be opposite genders, the dad is the responsible parent and is competent at his job while the mom is the deadbeat that ran out on them, they handled a trans character/date surprise sex/etc. and more way more realistically and sympathetically than most tv at the time would...it was such a smart, progressive show and that only makes the regressions of the third season (especially the false surprise sex accusations) even worse because of it.

The very first episode had false surprise sex accusations, but you were not suppose to look at them as a good thing Also the third is just okay after the awesome first two seasons.

My personal problem was the lack of focus. The mini-arc format really dragged the season down, especially because the second (out of two) mini-arc's plot finished with like 5 episodes to go. The last five episodes were really bad.

W knew that the rapist was going to be an arc for season 3 but do you think they should have made that the b arc and the murder the a? Make it so the rapist arc seemed that it was going to be the main one have nothing happen for a couple of episodes then bam kill the dean so that takes her attention and have the rapist be there but on the back burner, sort of like Veronica's own surprise sex.

The second season finale was terrible, but at least it was foreshadowed, as opposed to Season 1's finale, which implied practically everything BUT the main culprit at one point or another.
Yeah, the third season finale was certainly the best season finale, in my opinion, even if it did end a pretty average season of television.
My problem is that episodes 1-43 and the finale were exceptional in the genre, while the season 2 finale and most of season 3 were just... okay. That makes them terrible by comparison.

However when you rewatch it there are clues that he is a murderer and has some issues.

I think it was suppose to be the first time Dawson sees Joey has more than the best friend with jeans and a pony tail. She's got make-up on, a dress, and looks like a lady.

Keep watching - the second season is a bit rough, but the third season is the best! It's probably my favorite because Dawson takes a back seat and Joshua Jackson is given time to shine as Pacey.

I hope there is another Pacey Con this year

I am literally in love with Rory Gilmore. I am a crazy person in love with a fictional character. Problem is, there's no more of her. I've watched GG like 3 times (sans the last season because it's terrible). There's just nothing more of her.

So, are there any other shows with a character like Rory? You know, smart, driven, independent, not defined by the men in her life, insanely impossibly beautiful, etc. I mean, she's kind of a Mary Sue a lot of the time but gently caress it, I don't care. Rory Gilmore is awesome.

Okay so now that you all know I'm loving nuts, can anybody help me out here?

Veronica Mars is a bit like that

Rory Gilmore is so drat cool. I honestly wish there were more characters like her on TV. The only time she bugged me is the season when her and Lorelai were having that huge fight. Rory just acted like a complete bitch and so out of character. I also liked Paris, she just didn't give a poo poo what anyone thought.

Has anyone seen the movie Postgrad? I heard Alexis Bledel plays a Rory-ish character in it. It was weird seeing her in Mad Men the other week because I honestly can't see her as anyone but Rory, and Rory should not be half-naked on TV!

The wives on Mad Men are Rory, Annie from Community, and Alex Mack.

Was that when she dropped out of school? Yeah that was bullshit. Completely out of character. I think that was in one of the latter seasons when it seemed like the writers/ASP were grasping at straws (see also: Luke's daughter).

Well Annie has been in it since the first but Alex Mack and Rory have only been this season.

If you're looking for teen shows exclusively, though, you're pretty much hosed except for maybe Caroline on Vampire Diaries but she's a lot about the boys even if she's not necessarily defined by them.

Trixie from Deadwood is a bit like this. She is defined by her loyalty be it men or women.

What's even crazier is that on the DVD's they managed to get "Imagine" in the 4th or 5th season, but they can't license a Paula Cole song? What the gently caress?

On the DVD's at least, the Paula Cole song is intact for the first season for sure, maybe the 2nd, but when that third season hits it's so jarring.

Also since her "fame" came from Dawson Creek so her not willing to license it is completely ridiculous.

Does Nip/Tuck belong in this thread? The early seasons included lots of teen melodrama revolving around Matt. God I love that terrible, terrible show and would love to discuss how awful Ryan Murphy is.

Isn't that what the Glee thread and Glee's stupid spin-off thread is for?

I'm gonna jump back into BH90210 again, as I'm only on s2. IIRC, the episode you're watching has way better theme music than the rest of the season. drat that's a good theme tune.

From what I've seen of BH90210, it's not quite so destined for doom as Degrassi was... I think Wheels might be on par for the biggest train wreck character of all time parents get killed by a drunk driver, in turn becomes a rebel and drunkenly kills a child and injures one of this friends while behind the wheel of a car himself.

No Matt McNamara is. This all happened to him: He became a meth addict scientologist porn star mime who robs people. He also married a woman both his dads had hosed, and had a baby with her. Oh and goes to jail and becomes a prison bitch, is freed because of some stupid storyline that involves him getting an innocent guy executed, fucks a girl who ends up being his half sister, dates a severely disfigured Israeli woman who was the victim of a suicide bomber, jilts a woman at the alter so he can be with the transgender woman who seduced him as a teenager

I'm getting tired of... uh, let's just say "manly" shows - not because I enjoy perpetuating gender stereotypes, but because I don't know how else to describe them. I want to watch something "girly" - ugh, sorry - and I'm thinking maybe Awkward? Or Pretty Little Liars, but I dunno if I want something "crazy" like that.

What shows that are talked about in this thread are genuinely good shows, at least for a few seasons, and not just shows that are fun to watch for the trainwreck aspect of them? I don't mean to belittle the shows, it just seems there's a lot of discussion about how ridiculously bad things get in some of them.
