The Nationals sent down Bryce Harper...to work on his CF defense, because they've decided that's where his future lies. Okay.

I really don't understand why Harper is on the fast track at the moment. He only OPS .700ish in AA, will he really do that much better at the MLB level?

I don't either, but i think most of it has to do with pressure from fans and media to get him to the majors ASAP. I agree that he probably needs at least another season in the minors.

Yeah but how is he going to fare at 19 years old in the MLB when he couldn't even hit 800 OPS in AA? Is there a rush to bring him up so soon?

I think position player superprospects tend to make their own timetables and don't adhere to the usual "rules" where you want a player a full year at most levels where he masters the competition. Even ignoring sample size, I also don't think Harper's AA performance considering age relative to league context was as bad or underwhelming as people think; being a slightly above average hitter at age 18 in AA is a good thing, not a bad thing. He probably wasn't ready for the majors out of spring, but it wouldn't surprise me at all to see him up by the break if he's performing well, and I expect him to perform well.

I don't think you can set a statistical benchmark; this is one of those dreaded things where you have to actually evaluate the player's readiness and not go "well he's batting .300 he must be ready!" or "nope he's batting .270 that's not good enough!"

He has a major league deal, so it's already started. I think that is how that type of contract works.

Well I wasn't addressing that part, just the thing about his AA bat. I don't think it's really a pressing need for them to bring him up this season but if they have a shot at competing this year and feel like they need him I don't think it's a big deal.

Well if they think he is advanced enough then yea its worth it. You start getting him reps against major league pitchers, you build his experience, and have a person with potentially 3-4 solid major league years under his belt when he hits his power peak. Look at A-rod and Griffey. If he is like them, it couldn't hurt.

Grozz Nuy

I guess I just suspect the Nats' window is another year or two away and that it wouldn't hurt giving Harper more time against higher level pitching instead of just bumping him to the majors right away, especially if they're going to tinker with his position. I suppose a lot depends on how his first few months in AAA go.

2 wildcards, and the Nats are in a division with the Mets and 2 teams with big injury risks. You never know.

Well I had to phone his friend to state my case, and say he's lost control again.

And he showed up all the errors and mistakes, and said I've lost control again.

If Washington wasn't having a dumb dispute with their A+ team about field conditions we probably wouldn't be scrutinizing this, to be honest.

For what it's worth scouty types think he needs some more MiLB time because he hasn't quite adjusted to breaking pitches yet. I think that's a feature of the Nationals skipping A+ since that's where batters start to encounter pitchers with good secondary offerings consistently.

This will be interesting. Tsuyoshi Nishioka already optioned to Class AAA Rochester by Twins. Is this it? Can we just admit it didn't work?

I'm somewhat impressed the Twins are willing to recognize a sunk cost.
