I'm currently planning an Ann Arbor beer tasting for July 14th and I'd like to invite any and all beer goons that are nearby to come. I guess I'm not sure what time I'd like to start it yet, I was originally thinking 7, but if a bunch of you from out of town are going to show up I would make it earlier and we could order pizza or something. Hell, we could even meet at Jolly Pumpkin for food and beer first, then go back to my place for the bottle share. I'm really flexible. Hit me up in a PM or reply in the thread if you are interested!

Check it out guys, we can start to talk about how terrible pumpkin beers are even earlier this year!! http://beerpulse.com/2012/07/pumpki...ived-last-week/

quote:

Pumpkin ales have already hit shelves in some markets according to various reports on Twitter.

Breski Beverage, a Pennsylvania beer distributor and retailer, reported on June 28th that Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin and Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale were already in stock.

Beer author, Joshua Bernstein, reported Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale coming off of the bottling line last week.

Fixed that for you. Beer does not go with pie, and pie should not go inside of beer.

Tangentially related, I had Short's Carrot Cake beer twice. Once from a growler directly from the brewery, and once on tap at my local beer bar. The growler beer smelled and tasted incredibly like carrot cake (in a good way, actually). The on-tap version was a disgusting cinnamon mess. Substitute that for any of their other weird beers and thats been 95% of my experiences with Short's.

There's almost 0 pumpkin flavor and overall it's kind of boring. One of their more disappointing beers for sure. I assume they made it just so people could stop complaining that a brewery called Jolly Pumpkin had no pumpkin beers.

Maui/Jolly Pumpkin Sobrehumano Palena'ole (black can from Maui): I got a lot more toasty malts kinda like the Coconut Porter as opposed to any semblance of tartness. If anything, it was some kinda muddled fruit flavor somewhere in there. It's a weird mix of fruit a la Magic Hat #9. Plus it was $6 for two cans - gently caress that noise. Reviews seem to say that the JP version is far better, so Sirotan, ShaneB, etc, please post up your thoughts!

At $18 a bottle its definitely pricey, but has the characteristic Jolly Pumpkin "funk" and a nice tart flavor. I've had it on tap and from the bottle and I think its pretty fantastic. Are you somewhere that you can get the Maui cans off the shelf? I'd be interested in setting up a trade so that I could try them side by side. Could send a bottle of the JP version.

Rad. I kind of like Bell's "SURPRISE! IT'S FOR SALE!" special release schedule. While it means I'm never gonna snag a bottle of, say, Black Note without paying huge, huge secondary market mark-ups, it's refreshing that a brewery doesn't pander to the release-day hounds.

I think 8,000 was my favorite of the Batch releases, but their 25th Anniversary is still one of my all-time favorite beers. I'm holding onto 2 more bottles and I have no idea how well they age. I just know I'll be very sad if I ever finish them...

I guess I agree, the hype has been almost non-existent for every other beer of the series besides Black Note. I managed to snag one of those through a friend of a friend, maybe I'll get lucky again this time.

Depending on how concerned you are with BPA, beer can liners still contain it and as far as I know there are no current alternatives, nor does there seem to be any rush in the US to develop one. BeerPulse had a link to a good article about the current state of BPA usage in the food industry recently: http://beerpulse.com/2012/07/food-a...-on-bpa-safety/ It's the one thing that keeps me from 100% embracing cans.

I committed to go to a beer tasting on Friday night and just got an email from the guy hosting it. He's been incredibly weird and spergy about the whole thing, including sending out the invites via BA complete with beer-themed clip art, telling people to bring their beer in paper bags so that it all remains a ~*~secret~*~, and warning everyone to be there at 7pm sharp otherwise you will be fined a beer! Now he sent out a message to everyone going with his address, along with this:

spergy as gently caress beer nerd posted:

People/Ounzes:

There are 11 people coming, which means we’ll each get about 2 oz. of each beer. However, you’ll get to try a good # of beers (726 ounzes total at an average of 10.6% ABV).

He actually took the time to add up the volume of all the beer people were bringing. Christ. Why am I even still going?

Edit: Oh god. I think I found why he's so anal about everything. I googled him and found his website. He's a big time born again Christian, and it says his life goal is "to be a disciple of my rabbi, Jesus". I'm going to be preached at at this tasting aren't I?

Edit 2: Turns out it is the power of Christ compelling me to go.

Ahahahaha oh my god he posted photos of the beer tasting (before it has even happened) in a thread on BA complete with details on a 'game' we get to play.

quote:

The Game: Every single bottle (besides their own) is a mystery to the people attending. They will bring the bottle concealed into me, and I will put a bag over top, rubberband it, and give it a "#" that I assigned it in the tasting order (shout out to MarkIntihar, MordorMongo, & pschul4 for their help with the order).

Then, each person takes a sheet and as we taste they rate each beer and then guess from the list I provided on the right side of the sheet which beer they think each one is. Get it right, and you get a point...Top points gets 1st, 2nd 2nd, & 3rd 3rd...easy as that.
