Yeah, I've seen Robocop. Bitches, leave.

Hello all, and welcome to the fourth installment of our continuous shriek of horror at TvTropes.org!

THE RULE: LOOK, DON’T TOUCH
If you post here, don’t post there. Don’t edit the wiki. Don’t try and “improve” it. Don’t troll directly, don’t publicly contact tropers, and, if you used to be a troper, don’t talk about it. Not only does this cause trouble, but it’s less funny—the administration’s hate of the site and paranoia about our evil ways is vastly funnier when all we’re doing is laughing at them.
IF YOU’RE A FORMER TROPER, SHUT UP ABOUT IT
We don’t need you to defend the site, argue for fixing it, or try and be our buddy. If you want to join SA, feel free too, but don’t treat this thread like the ex-troper clubhouse. Don’t sign up unless you’re going to use the whole forums, and don’t make this thread about you. And once you quit TVTropes, don’t go back.

What is TvTropes?
There were no practical hints to interrupt the magic current of phrases, unless a kind of note at the foot of the last page, scrawled evidently much later, in an unsteady hand, may be regarded as the exposition of a method. It was very simple, and at the end of that moving appeal to every altruistic sentiment it blazed at you, luminous and terrifying, like a flash of lightning in a serene sky: “Exterminate all the brutes!” -Joseph Conrad

Okay, but what does it claim to be?
TVTropes, which started as an offshoot of a Joss Whedon messageboard, is a wiki of media “tropes”—here meaning anything which has happened multiple times in book, movies, TV, video games, anime, comics, or real life (but mostly anime). Think of it as a user-edited wiki of recurring ideas, events, and character types in art.
“TVTropes is a tool for writers,” as they say. It has a huge number of aspiring writers among its userbase, and attempts to dissect the patterns and themes of art in order to demonstrate how various mediums tell their stories.
TVTropes is a place for friends. It has lively forums that are full of friendly discussion, populated by interesting and unique people. It used to have a section called “troper tales,” in which these people talked about how tropes from media appeared in their day-to-day lives. This was deleted because some other people started making fun of it, but you can view the entire archives of it here, thanks to helpful goon Shlapingtogan.

Well, that doesn’t sound—
That’s what it claims to be. It is, in fact, a place where horrible people can talk about horrible things at horrible length.

First, its claims that “there is no such thing with notability,” combined with being an open wiki to the entire internet, mean that it is bloated with bullshit. Its sections on real literature and actual art are stunted little nubs, while its anime sections are as swollen and overfull as an infected cyst and its page on My Little Pony is literally a contender for the longest novel in the world. It actively discourages analysis, deep discussion, the criticism of any works valued by the contributors, and has pages on troper-written fanfiction, pornographic comics about surprise sex and murder, and child pornography.

Second, it is an awful tool for writers. TVTropes, rather than analyzing why an idea is used, only lists what works use it. This leads to most troper-fiction being horribly-written fiction-by-numbers, in which all the “coolest” tropes are jammed together in a semblance of narrative. The policy of “never say anything bad about anything,” combined with the administration’s belief that to criticize a work in any way is to personally insult the artist, means that any artist who turns to the TV Tropes community for help will end up getting nothing more than a slow, loving handjob. TVTropes is the source of some of the worst writing on the internet, and I have never seen writing emerge from it that was more than just mediocre.

Finally, it is an it is full of the worst people on earth. The golden rule of TVTropes is “never be mean to another user ever,” and this means that you will have open pedophiles, racists, homophobes, and white supremacists posting without other tropers ever arguing with them. We’ve seen them argue for abolishing all age-of-consent laws, openly hit on 15-year-old users, advocate the forced conquest and conversion to Christianity of all of Africa, and mock surprise sex victims, all without reprisal from administration. The only priority of TVTropes’ administration is making sure that no one is mean—as a result, bigotry and evil of all flavors has been allowed to fester on their site. This does, of course, bleed through into the wiki—see all the trope pages relating to underage sex, racism, little girls, or sex of any kind. The moderation is only now working to correct this, and is fighting tooth and nail to make “let’s not gush about how sexy 7-year-olds are” a rule. It remains to be seen if they’ll ever accomplish this.

A good summation of this is Geek Social Fallacies and Geek Social Fallacies of Sex-- go down the first and you'll basically check off every major problem with TVTropes' "let's all be friends" userbase, go down the second and you'll check off the reason that they're always competing for who can have the most hosed-up fetishes and sexualize the youngest cartoons.

Are they at least trying to get better?
Yes and no. Fast Eddie (the site administrator) is insanely thin-skinned and has not been taking the focus on his site well. He’s made cursory efforts to try and keep open pedophilia off the main wiki, but that’s about it. He, and his associates, despise SA (the exact term he used was “vile pit of hate”) and he vandalized his own wiki to remove all positive mentions of them. Plenty of people have raised questions about the site’s policies in its forums, only to be dismissed as undercover goons trying to start poo poo.

In short: TVTropes at its best is awkward nerds talking about anime forever, at its worst is awkward nerds jerking off to children being raped forever

Here, have some greatest hits:
This Troper, a series of dramatic readings of the worst of TVTropes. They hate these.

Rottweiler posted:

No one has explained what good it tends toward. With intercourse, we can see that the telos of eros is babies. Indeed, the science of biology even defines an organism's success by how many grandchildren it has.

Homosexual activism completely ignores the question of what this behavior tends toward (telos) in favor of insisting that it's equal to heterosexual behavior. Well no, they're demonstrably different.

Savage Heathen posted:

Ages of consent should never be higher than the typical age teens start having sex on their own volition. If a large portion of them are sexually active out of their own free will, it's safe to assume that they can, and in fact do, give consent.
Anything higher than 15 is absurd puritanism.

Ramidel posted:

Finally, I consider genocide, as opposed to culturcide, to be a last resort; as I said, I would prefer finishing the job of civilizing the region. (Yes, I did unironically advocate the White Man's Burden there.)

Hidden Faced Matt posted:

In this case, the very existence of false surprise sex accusations in the first place are why determining whether a given surprise sex occurred or not is uncertain, apart from the damage it does to the lives of the falsely accused. It is not only part of why so many non-rapists' lives are ruined, it is also part of why so many rapists go free. It should carry penalties comparable to those of surprise sex itself.

Took A Level In Badass posted:

This troper took a few levels when, after years of being a Woobie so pitiful Shinji would say what the heck is wrong with you, I had enough of a girl I liked always going for this tall, blond guy. When they were talking right in front of me in the street and holding arms and talking and all that, I said, "Shut. The. Hell. Up." The boy looks around and walks over, trying to look menacing. Martial arts studies come in. I take a punch to the forehead and then slide under and punch him in the stomach, he goes backwards and I land another one to his face. I then go berserk and full body tackle him. He managed to crawl away, and say, "That kid...is inhuman!" Another level was taken when I knocked a knife out of Joseph Stubb's hand

Jerk With A Heart of Gold posted:

•This troper views himself as cynical Jerkass who acts nice for his owns reasons. He sees himself and has been described as very cold, secretive and aloof, and is rather snarky and abrasive to people he doesn't know or like. However, everyone around him describes him as very kind, compassionate, articulate, and a generally stand up human being who they're glad to know. Even his deceased (and beloved..)girlfriend, a diehard loudmouth Tsundere who generally got along with no one, consistently described him as a very nice and caring guy under the cold snarky exterior who doesn't give himself near enough credit. He has yet to convince them that he's really a bastard who forces himself to act nice, but is hopeful they'll come around one day.

KNOW THINE ENEMY
The Management
Fast Eddie: the site’s founder, and its dictatorial ruler. Despises criticism in all forms, thinks everyone should be friends. Despite being the main administrator and programmer, is absolutely terrible at both—TVTropes is horribly put together and riddled with security holes. Despite being in his late fifties and living in the Bahamas, chooses to spend most of his free time hanging out on TV Tropes. Once tried to pass off pictures of a younger, more sane-looking man as himself for unknown reasons. Is slowly losing his goddamn mind.

Madrugada: Fast Eddie’s right-hand woman. An aging cat lady who spends most of her time as moderator deleting every negative post she can find. Enforces niceness with an iron fist.

Fighteer: Fast Eddie’s war dog. Whereas Madrugada prefers to be people’s friend, Fighteer sees every user as a potential enemy. Is convinced the widespread criticism of their site is a single, unified conspiracy and will accuse all users who raise issues with the site’s management of being goons.
Bobby G: One of the only mods to tolerate actual criticism of the site. Usually a voice of reason, and actually encourages discussion rather than thumping it. Still a terrible poet, though.
Morven: The only mod we’ve seen actually criticize the management. Will occasionally post here, usually to let us know if someone awful has been banned or if we’re misinterpreting an administrative decision. Basically the only person with an exemption to “look, don’t touch,” since he’s smart enough not to start poo poo.
Best Of: Moderator of Off Topic Conversations, specially appointed because that board is the site’s main source of awful opinions that other people laugh at. A decent mod, but incapable of holding back the tide of bigotry and awful.

The Sperg’s Gallery
Deboss: A malfunctioning robot. Thinks the only goal of humanity is to create technology, and advocates mass murder, dystopian government, and extreme censorship in its service. Hates all art (especially Shakespeare) and believes that profit margins are the only measure of quality. Worships the cold steel god of logic. Currently works as a shopping cart pusher at Home Depot.
Drunk Scriblerian: The head of The Straight Male Tropers. Occasionally says some pretty dumb things about women and believes that racism doesn’t exist. Still one of the only voices of reason in a lot of OTC threads. Mostly funny because he looks like Wyatt Earp. His girlfriend regularly posts under the name “Drunk Girlfriend,” and most of the above applies to her as well.

Mark Von Lewis: A sad wreck of a man. Is a virgin despite being well into his twenties and constantly trying to get laid—possibly because he’s a breathtakingly misogynistic alcoholic with no teeth. Despite ranting all the time about being a (TOTALLY STRAIGHT) manly man who drinks a ton, usually drinks sugary candy drinks while browsing TV Tropes.
Savage Heathen: What happens when someone takes punk songs literally. Wants to kill all cops and destroy all governments, and live in an anarchistic utopia. Is a colossal rear end in a top hat. Banned from OTC.
Major Tom= Claims to be an expert in all military matters due to his service. In reality, washed out of basic training and never saw combat. Hates all Muslims and has seriously advocated nuking all of the Middle East. An avid reader of multiple comics which feature cheesecake of underage girls. Working on a terribly-written thousand-page epic about space marines and anime aliens. Banned from OTC.
Doma Doma: An incredibly stupid poster who has defended white supremacist organizations, argued that surprise sex victims should be judged for not being more careful, and that businesses should be allowed to practice overt racism. Arguably the worst poster in OTC.
My God It’s Full of Stars: Gives Doma a run for her money. Wants America to be run by a mystical fantasy government, thinks racism is over and that minorities need to suck it up, and hates China with a fiery passion.
Mr. AHR/Atticus Finch: a surprise sex fetishist who never showers. Infamously defended a porn story in which an 8-year-old was gang-raped as “just porn.” Dates Cakman, treats him like poo poo.
Cakman: "I am an overweight asperger ridden teenager that has done nothing but ogle porn for my entire life. " AHR’s boyfriend. Follows her everywhere on the forums and talks about how great she is. Really, really loving annoying. Has made multiple threads about how great his surprise sex-fetishist pedophile girlfriend is.

Enemy Mayan: The writer of terrible porn and author of such lines as “the dickgirls opened fire.” Has a huge array of disgusting/morally repugnant fetishes and talks about them constantly.
Feotakahari: Enemy Mayan’s rival in porn. A slightly better writer and person, but still writes porn about underage teens getting off on knife wounds. Also a furry.
Aoendeug: Often comes across as one of the few reasonable voices in discussions on gender and race. Then you remember she’s a pedophile.
Hydronix: Wants to make trope pages for everything, by which we mean surprise sex fiction and snuff porn. When someone says that the wiki doesn’t need obsessively-detailed entries for murder porn, accuses them of being the Thought Police.
Barkey: I don’t want to call him a fascist, but thinks that you should never question the police or the army and that treason should be swiftly punished. Takes a personal pride in being racist towards Mexicans and is a general right-wing rear end in a top hat—basically Major Tom without the pedophilia or bad art. One of the most popular OTC posters, which says a lot.
Hidden Faced Matt: Misogynist extraordinaire. Will turn every conversation possible to the notion that men are a persecuted minority. Believes that a false surprise sex accusation is just as bad a crime as surprise sex, and argues that women who falsely accuse should be sent to prison—and raped in prison—as appropriate punishment.

Gone, but Not Forgiven: important tropers that, while we may not see them around, are still worth chronicling.
Rottweiler: Imagine a nerdy, degenerate version of Rick Santorum. Fancies himself a philosopher (has taken one intro course), believes that women are supposed to serve men, that gay sex is wrong because the telos of eros is babies, and that everything written or created before the 60s is superior (except My Little Pony, his favorite show). Believes everyone should dress like 40s pulp characters and that women should never wear pants. Thinks that European culture is the only good culture and that it must be protected from the threat of Islam. Is an “ephebophile” with a cannibalism fetish. Left voluntarily, still horrible

Shichibukai: A flat-out Nazi. I’m not kidding. He spent months posting about how the white race was under siege and how black immigrants were threatening our way of life, and was only banned when goons pointed out that that he was copy-pasting from Stormfront. (None of the people agreeing with his Stormfront propaganda were banned in any way). Banned for being a white supremacist and getting noticed.
Signed: An admitted, open pedophile. Posted about how much he loved kiddie porn comics, how much he wanted to repeal age of consent laws, and how natural it was to want to have sex with 15-year-olds. Had an avatar of a little girl getting groped by slugs. The only troper ever banned for pedophilia.
MRDA 1981: “The pain of ‘date surprise sex’ is probably no worse than a bad breakup.” Once called surprise sex victims “cunts” and “slabs of meat” while posting surprise sex porn “as a joke.” Banned for being a dick about his surprise sex apologism
Chagen 46: Pedophile diaper fetishist attention whore. Absolutely disgusting and probably the most revolting person to ever post on TVT. TVTropes marks the only forum that he has not been chased off of with torches and pitchforks. Banned for posting porn of an underage videogame character without labeling it NWS.

If you hate yourself, the previous thread is here.

Ironically?

So I already covered the first writing contest a while back, which gave us "The Silent Girl", a story dealing with a boy, his knife, and the female version of wolverine. I'm hoping saddest rhino includes it in the next compilation because it has to be seen to be believed.

Now it's time to start on the second writing contest, held October-November 2010. This time around the theme is "Now and Then", the premise being to write a story (2000-5000 words) where one part is set at one point in time, then the next part is set at a later point in time.

As ever, points were awarded for the following:

quote:

5 points for conventions (spelling, grammar, capitalization)
5 points for theme (and staying within the word limit)
15 points for general critique (plot, characters, world building, writing style, etc)
So as you can see, they have no idea how to properly run a writing contest because those 15 points are on a criteria which is horribly vague and open to interpretation from the judges. There were 4 judges so each entry was judged individually out of 25, then the scores were tallied to give a score out of 100.

The first story, which I'll probably post up tomorrow, is by a troper called English Ivy and is boring as poo poo. I'll be posting it, then later on that night I'll post what the judges said along with my own scoring of the story.

Long story short, tropers who were reading the third thread took upon themselves to complain to the staff in a futile attempt to either clean up the place or get noticed by SA. The mods then surmised that any sign of dissent was evidence of treason and banned everyone who spoke up. It's a brand new thread, a new dawn brimming with promise and PEDOPHILE TIME YEE HAW

If you thought the Innocent Panties (christ I feel like I should be on a loving list just for typing that) page sounded like it was written entirely by one mouth-breathing creep, you'd be right. Midnight68 has previously given his input on Panty Shot...

Midnight68 posted:

Defining the trope is going to be a little difficult. For example, Uran from Astro Boy is correctly described as the trope maker in Japanese animation, but clearly, no sexual content was implied. It's also questionable whether the panty shots were intended for comic effect; it was more or less a visual convention of the period, ie the way that cartoonists depicted young girls at that time. This naturally prompts the question: which category does the actual Trope Maker fall under? Panty shots were integral to Uran's character design, but they weren't Fanservice, ISeeLondon or FetishFuel.

As mentioned in the article, panty shots weren't employed for comedy or fanservice until the late sixties. That started with Nagai's Harenchi Gakuen (1968) and rapidly spread throughout all forms of Japanese popular culture (including TV and cinema). Even then, it was used more as mildly ecchi humor than as true Fanservice (the artwork was still very cartoony and child-oriented at the time). Panchira only really became Fetish Fuel during the 80s, when Hentai emerged as a specific genre. The problem is, all of these overlap to some degree. There's no clear division between Tezuka's Uran (incidental panty shot), Fujio's Shizuka (humorous panty shot), and Nagai's Cutie Honey (ecchi panty shot).

Believe it or not, two Japanese writers actually attempted to sort panty shots into broad categories (I know it sounds ridiculous, but panchira is is a big part of their popular culture). Akihara and Takekuma approached it from a developmental perspective, describing how the convention evolved from the 1950s up to the late 90s. Speaking briefly, they divided the evolution up by decades, showing that panty shots became increasingly more fetishized (and detailed) as Japan relaxed its sexual taboos.

Although the book mentioned above was definitely tongue-in-cheek, it still provides a good framework to draw upon. I would suggest following a similar chronology here (at least in the Anime/Manga section) starting with Astro Boy and ending with more recent series (such as Kodomo no Jikan or Moetan). The examples currently employed in the article follow no particular pattern, if we place them in chronological order, we'll at least have an organized structure we can work with.
To which the only sane response is of course...

Daremo posted:

Good work there, impressive research.

I'm not sure one page can cover all possibilities. Given that we already have pages for comedy and fanservice, a page for the older innocent style and a chronological Useful Notes page (Panties Through The Ages?) might both be called for.

The above post is the least creepy thing about the troper called Midnight68. His contributor page looks pretty sparse at first, being just a list of pages he's working on and pages he plans to in the future. The former are entirely anime, which seems pretty standard for TVT until you click the links and see that every single one has an underage panty shot for its page image.

Every.

loving.

One.

(I was originally going to link to the pages in question right here, but I'm going to play it safe here because I don't know if linking to this horrible poo poo is allowed even if it's just TVtropes hosting it.)

Nine links on the guy's contributor page, nine pictures of children's underwear and/or nipples. Some of those are DarthWiki articles for animes he has completely made up (but still illustrated with pictures from his collection) and bizarrely included a copyright notice linking back to his troper page as the 'owner'. A quick Google shows he has been banned from Wikipedia and DeviantArt already for similar hijinks. As far as I know he hasn't been banned or noticed by the mods on TVtropes, probably because he does nothing but obsessively edit his own articles and has only interacted with the rest of the site to complain when Panty Shot was in the firing line (again, as far as I know).

Tropers have such low standards that any girl or guy who posts their picture on there will be talked about as if they are the hottest thing ever.

You don't even need to post your picture, I saw a 17-year-old girl mention she wanted a boyfriend who liked anime and get hit by "joking" replies from 6 different tropers

Becuase novels aren't for thinking about, silly. They're for identifying and cataloging tropes!

I failed at catching up on the last TVTropes thread like, four thousand posts from where it ended. Let's see how long it takes me to go 'nope, gently caress this poo poo' this time.

It's just like walking around playstation home with a female avatar, only worse.

The Know Thine Enemy key is a tad shorter than I expected. But I suppose it will get bigger with time.

Oh good, I was starting to catch up on the other thread, but I had 11,000 posts to go so I might've been dead by the end it.

Thou bootless clapper-clawed varlot!

After the Reddit meltdown, reading the freeper's response to the death of Andrew Breitbart, and this latest Thad McMichael child porn thing, I wanted to avoid going down the rabbit hole of another internet mess. How do these communities pop up? I always saw the tvtropes thread and never looked in it. I just assumed it was an actual thread about tv tropes. For my mental health, I'm going to pretend it is about tv tropes, and not come back in here for a few weeks.

Ever notice how every cop in police dramas live in swanky highrise apartments? That poo poo is whack, yo.

Also, Tom's novel never stops being hilarious.

We have missed an opportunity; we could all be posting in TV Tropes Goes Fourth: The Siege Of Dreyorball.

You know, I have to wonder about all the Gundam references in his work. How can somebody so obsessed with the honour and glory of war hold a programme with a strong anti-war message in such high esteem?

Yes, that's a thing, let's prove it with examples, it's in like 20 animes and not think about why it is or why there's an MLP example somehow.

By only paying attention to the robots and explosions and bitching about how boring all the talking is.

In honor of the new thread, does any have the story of when Chagen proudly boasted about being a bigoted gently caress to a Muslim girl until she cried? Someone mentioned it in the last thread but no one responded when I asked for details.

I just thought Chagen was a whiny, disgusting, pedophile, attention whore and he's also a bigot?

Seriously, is there something negative Chagen isn't?

The one thing I've always found hilarious about Dropout Tom is that he actually thinks that Gundams will be built in the near future.

His hypocrisy is one of his most infuriating characteristics. He was happy to share his disgusting coprophiliac fantasies, but in a thread which brought up kinks he didn't like, he wouldn't stop whinging about how it was against his religion.

Now, what made this particularly offensive was a subsequent revelation that he's only a Christian "for pragmatic reasons"; Chagen is only interested in Christianity if it will get him into heaven. After that made a post in another thread, expressing his belief that heaven is essentially personalised to the individual believer, and his was going to be some kind of super-robot anime thing.
