i looked it up and no you don't. There is more than enough poo poo in SP to get the BEST ending and it has nothing to do with War Readiness. You just have to get above a certain level of military strength. Playing MP fills in the gaps for whatever little quests or poo poo you missed. If you didn't import a save from me1 and me2, you have to play MP to get the best ending because you won't get enough military might.

Funny you should mention this. I was getting sick of all this circular arguing about multi vs single and assets etc so I spent a few minutes testing with Gibbed's coalesed.bin extractor.

1. Backup your coalesed.bin file located in [your me3 folder]\biogame\cookedpcconsole
2. Download gibbed's coalesed.bin extractor. I don't have a link at hand but maybe someone can share it.
3. Drag and drop your coalesed.bin file on top of the executable and it will extract all of the configuration files into a seperate folder.
4. Open the file called 09_bioui.json and find the sfxgame.sfxgawassetshandler section which lists all of the assets.
5. When I did it I tested with the Kelly Chambers asset called GAWAsset_CerberusExPatriots. On that line you will see a value called starting strength as follows

code:
        "(ID=133,AssetName=\"GAWAsset_CerberusExPatriots\",Type=GAWAssetType_Military,SubType=GAWAssetSubType_Ground,StartingStrength=10,GUIName=715488,GUIDescription=715607,bIsExploration=False,UnlockPlotStates[0]=0,GUICategoryID=4,DebugConditionalDescription=\"Chambers Alive\",bShowNotificationOnAward=true,ImagePath=\"gui_codex_images.Codex.CDX_Cerberus_512x256\",NotificationImagePath=\"GUI_Icons.Notifications.GM_Cerberus_256x128\")",
6. As you can see it has a starting strength of 10. Edit this to whatever you feel is appropiate and save the file.
7. Drag and drop the folder on top of the executable to generate a new coalesed.bin file. Put this file in your cookedpc folder.
8. Load up a save game from before you recieve the asset in question. In Kelly's case it was when I read an email from her sometime after the coup and I had saved her life.
9. You will be awarded the asset at the value entered. Save your game
10. Exit the game and restore your backed up bin file to the cookedpc folder. You keep the new value as your asset and your bin file should be safe for using with multiplayer.
11. And most importantly from now on just enjoy multiplayer for the fun of it and single player for the fun of it and never the twain shall meet again.

I want to do this, but I'm way past that point in the game. I haven't met the quarians/geth yet, (but I just met Samara) is there something else I can use?

Ending:

You can't actually retain the cycle, whatever choice Shepard makes, the cycle is over. If he chooses control, he loses his physical form to control the reapers, the citadel is saved but the mass relays are presumably destroyed. If you choose synthesis, somehow all organics get synthetic "DNA" in them (seriously Bioware? Too much Battlestar Galactica), the cycle is ended, the reapers, citadel and mass relays are desroyed. Finally, the destroy one kills off the reapers, mass relays, synthetic AIs and the Citadel, but spares organics forever. This is also the only ending where Shepard lives.

All of these endings are really stupid because it doesn't solve the problem posed in the first place. Also what about the overuse of Mass Effect? or something? Ugh.

Well, it took me 37 hours, but I beat it. I'll update the OP now that I know everything (with spoiler tags of course).

Of course I loved the game overall, but I have some ending feelings:

This was my "get the hell back together with Kaidan at all costs" playthrough, so when I ran to that beam and Kaidan and Garrus weren't talking, I thought I'd gotten them killed by bringing them along. Terrifying, but fortunately not true. Anderson dying killed me, I feel awful about it, but I still took the "red" ending and controlled the Reapers so that I didn't have to die. Normandy crashes on a planet (which can't be that far from Earth, since the Normandy was just there picking up my crew) and Garrus and Kaidan walk out of it with Joker, and Shep survives, barely (I assume the remains of the Citadel crash on Earth), so MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, eventually Shep will get better and find a ship and they'll live happily ever after and don't anyone tell me otherwise.

I just kind of wish there would have been a bit more resolution - it was a great ending, but I'm really attached to these characters and I want them to be happy. I wanted to see them all back together at the end, victorious and alive. I mean, my Shep survived, but the two other options you don't (I think?). So... I guess I just wanted a little more happiness (out of this "everyone is dying the world is ending sacrifice everyone you love" game. Silly me, haha

Though I have to say, the best part of the game, without a doubt, was (near-endgame character development spoilers) walking in to the gun battery right before the end and seeing that Garrus and Tali got together. They were totally awkward and hilarious about it, I laughed SO HARD, utter perfection.

I just want to know how you spent 9 more hours than me beating this game. I did everything and didn't skip anything and I still have no idea how you'd pad it out nine more hours.

With my ending the only crew who left the ship were Joker, Liara and Javik. Liara was with me when running for the beam and Javik I used and spoke to maybe once in the whole game.

Is it a random selection of who is alive at the end or is it like ME2 where you have to do certain things to keep people alive?

I used Javik the whole game, Liara was my love interest, and Javik and EDI were with me at the end, and the same exact people came out of the ship as you.

You have proven that Javik is on the disk, but is the mission that unlocks him? That seems to be what the "From Ashes" DLC does.

Using that ini edit just seems to force the character to show up and be used.

You can used a modified exe that enables it along with everything else, such as voice acting, cutscenes, missions, etc.

Google around if you don't believe me.

the exe isn't 500+ mb or anything, which means everything is already on the disk it just has to be "enabled". This seems to be the case with the CE edition, at least.

Is this good or bad? What's your opinion here?

It reads like you're being negative, but Hollywood soundtracks are normally incredibly well composed, well recorded and effecting works, not something that is thrown together as a .midi file and tossed into the background of a scene.

It overuses that Inception horn (that it overused to the point it popularized it) in too many songs, and there's something to be said about each track sounding "epic". You start to become numbed to the actual tracks and find that because of such, most of the tracks blend into each other and become less iconic and more derivative of each other. There's a few standout tracks sure, but I find it tended to be the tracks that played while actually evicting an emotion out of the player after playing the game.

As for the ending, I'm somewhat reassured by the fact that the asari still have a Prothean beacon, humanity has the Prothean Archives, and said Protheans actually figured out the whole Building Relays thing. It'll take a while, but I think civilization would get back on its feet. And there's always conventional FTL. My issue with the ending is the total lack of follow through, combined with the Gilligan's Planet ending for my crew. I mean, c'mon. You can't give my CREW a hero's welcome on Earth, at least? What was the Normandy even DOING in FTL?

They weren't in FTL, they were traveling through the sol relay, so they're not that far.

So, questions!

-The Day-One DLC. Worth it? Do you miss out on not having it? Did it feel cut out of the main game?

Absolutely.

-Romances with people not on your crew, a la Jack/Thane/etc. Just as burgeoning as your crew romances, or shoe-horned-in garbage?

Shoehorned in.

-For that matter, do they seriously pull it off with the choices thing or is it like the ME2 thing where you get those couple of badass scenes with Wrex and the Council and then a bunch of emails from Aria and Kal Reegar saying what up.

Exactly that in most cases.

-Speaking of the Council, please tell me if they do something hilarious with air-quotes guy.

Not that I could tell.

-All the stuff people (like myself) had a problem with prior to release, how is it in the actual game? Is that ED-E/Joker thing as horrible as was suggested? Or Cerberus becoming de facto enemies?

It's in the game, but it's not nearly as horrible as I thought.

-Morinth! Tell me Morinth gets a nod.

She doesn't. She's in the game as a named enemy on the last level afaik.

-I know the combat owns so I won't ask about it. Actually, yes I will, does the combat, in fact, own?

It's much better than ME2 but still pretty clunky.

-Is it more tightly-focused a la ME1 (intro, four real planets, climax) or more akin to the sprawling ME2 (dozens of missions happening all over the place, some more epic than the main plot itself)?

Like a weird mix of ME1 and ME2. No mission complete screens, thankfully.
