How is your character typically handled with Bethesda's DLC? I didn't play Oblivion or get very far in Fallout 3, but I got to nearly 100 in every skill in Skyrim and my character was pretty overpowered even on the highest difficulty.

Does everyone start with a brand new character with the DLC or do you just continue on with your existing character?

Generally speaking there will be a popup saying "Oh go here for new content" even if you are just out of the starting dungeon. Never change Bethesada.

In their defense, the starts to Bloodmoon and Tribunal were much better- you learn about Bloodmoon through 'latest rumors', and you start Tribunal when the Dark Brotherhood shows up trying to harvest your head.

Nah, it'll be a courier. Not too bad, really.

edit: Hmmm, they'd need to tie that to some other event though, or you'll just get a courier running up to you and interrupting while Hadvar or Ralof give their "come visit my sister/uncle" speech. So it may still suck balls after all. Time shall tell.

And after the second and third DLCs, three or more couriers all rushing you after you get out of the tutorial dungeon, delivering some bullshit letter "from a friend" about a strange portal to Hammerfell that has suddenly appeared in a toilet in Windhelm.

Good God, this is going to suck, isn't it?

If Shivering Isles is any indication of what Bethesda can do with a full-fledged expansion pack, then no. I'm sure they'll work in something a bit more clever than couriers every single time.

Seriously? We have to wait until June just to get details on it? 7 months out from the main game's launch before players even get to learn officially what'll be in the first dlc? I mean, I'm happy that they're putting time into it at all, and that it isn't just going to be content that was finished at released but released as dlc to make more money, but that seems a little long. I'm really hoping that it's because they're making this huge and awesome, and not because they've got like one guy on it and everyone else is on Fallout 4 or whatever.

The fact that it's called Dawnguard and the guy has glowing eyes suddenly makes me hope that it's about vampires rising up when the seasons change and there's only like 3 hours of daylight or something.

Basically, 30 Days of Night, Skyrim Edition.

I'm going to guess that this is a larger expansion pack akin to Shivering Isles and the Morrowind packages. Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but if they want to show it off at E3 then I figure it must be a fairly large project. How often does DLC get shown off at E3 anyway?

I'm more curious as to why they're being so tight-fisted with the details, I figured they would want to give a synopsis of what they have planned so the fans can have something to chew on.

Was it ever explained why the 360 gets the whole 30 day exclusivity thing? I'm overall not too butthurt about it; the 360 users can find all the bugs and whatnot to make it much more polished when it comes on on PC.

I do feel sorry for PS3 gamers especially. Not only does their Skyrim not perform correctly, they get double shafted by having to watch Xbox gamers get DLC 30 days before the rest of us.

I mean, yeah, as a PC gamer I don't like that I have to wait 30 days after the 360 release date to play Dawnguard, but at least I have hundreds of hours of user-made content to keep me occupied. PS3 gamers get... nothing.

Now I'm going to start using Dawnbreaker for everything, except not because my Daedric Sword through +Blacksmithing enchantment gear and potions does a googleplex times more damage.

Really though, I wonder how they're going to incentivize progress through the expansion when there's no hard level cap, there's a hard cap on damage mitigation so I can make my legendary kilt provide as much protection as my legendary glass assless chaps, and after you start improving things the game becomes a huge joke, even at max difficulty.

But that's just ranting. What I'm really wondering is if this long-rear end production time (6 months without even horse armor, we get a goddamn teaser image and a note sayig "your princess is in another castle"?) means that they can properly integrate user feedback, rather than something that's been in the works since before the game came out and basically meant we could expect more of the same.

NaturalLow posted:

Meridia is a relative blank slate as far as the Daedric Princes go; she likes living things, is associated with Spriggans and the Aurorans from Knights of the Nine, and hates the undead. I don't think there's even any canon information on her plane of Oblivion aside from its name ("The Colored Rooms"). If they centre the plot of the DLC around her like Shivering Isles was centred around Sheogorath they could take things in almost any direction.

Still, wish there'd be more of a hint towards what sort of setting we're looking at here. Or anything at all really.

Well this is how I feel. gently caress you too Bethesda.

I'm hoping with the cool stuff in their "sizzle reel" they're keeping tight lipped because they have something truly unique. I would love some more skill trees that compliment existing play styles - say a crossbow tree for melee wielders that lets you cause some ranged damage while closing in on enemies, and maybe something unique for archers like pets, and something involving melding shouts into magic for mages.

bigmike posted:

Bethesda DLC since Oblivion has traditionally increased the challenge by giving monsters poo poo-tons of HP making them bullet sponges. This can make playing them as a high level character unpleasant since it doesn't really feel more difficult, just much slower due to level scaling. I'm not saying that's how Dawnguard will be, but it seems easier to implement than new types of enemy abilities/challenges.

My nearly baseless speculation is that since the Skyrim afterlife got so messed up by Alduin, Meridia wants/needs to step in and, as a result, there will be a lot of loving undead to deal with.

And maybe some vampires.

Junkenstein

It's very unlikely to be a continuation of the main quest, since that would require you to complete it with every character you'd like to use for the DLC/Expansion.

I don't understand this exclusivity thing at all. I mean, I do in the sense that I'm sure somebody at Microsoft wrote a check while wearing a tophat, but this isn't a standalone title. Nobody is going run out and buy a different version of Skyrim just to play the DLC early. Nobody owns Skyrim on multiple platforms and is unsure of which DLC to get. What's the point, aside from aggravating people?

I'm not up in arms or anything, but I'm a little bitter because 90% of the issues I had with Skyrim stemmed from its console prioritization (bad optimization, glitchy graphics, worst UI I've handled in recent memory) and it's sad to see it continue.

I believe it was known long before the game came out, so if anyone wasn't sure which console to buy it for, it could have made a big difference since, for all they knew, there'd be some sort of DLC out before xmas. Of course the longer the wait, the less an extra 4 weeks matters, especially if it's going to be a big expansion(s).

Bethesda has been worse on DLC. An announcement basically saying nothing is sort of exciting in that aspect.

Also, I am continuously puzzled by people buying Bethesda games for the PS3. When was the last one that worked well? Let's say New Vegas doesn't count.

It matters mostly because it turns a day 1 buy into something you'll watch a Let's Play of and then never, ever consider buying.

This is amazing.

I always get amazed at how perfect the motions are on these things.

I'm also reading through Bethesda's forums, and so many people think it HAS to do something with Cyrodiil because there's the White Gold Tower in the game. That's not what it is. It's a developer in-joke, I would imagine. You could see it from (virtually) anywhere in Cyrodiil, so they put it in Skyrim as a joke!
