An ESPN's documentary on Magic Johnson's announcement that he was HIV-positive is coming out this Sunday. Some of the ads mention that you'll always remember where you were when he made that announcement. I personally don't remember anything about it since I was five at the time. So the question is, where were you when the Challenger exploded/September 11/LA Riots/OJ car chase/any Kennedy death/Berlin Wall fell/Oklahoma City Bombing/2005 London Bombings and so on. For 9/11, my dad woke me up for school and told me that planes had crashed into the WTC and one of the towers had fallen. We turned on the radio and about a minute into the drive, the second tower fell. For the Oklahoma City Bombing, I remember my brother jokingly asking why I had blown up a building in Oklahoma. I didn't know what he was talking about. I was too caught up in Joe Montana's retirement.

On 9/11 I had been at school (8th grade, I think) and was in first period Social Studies at the time. At this point in time, we were supposed to bring in "current events" to discuss with the class, which basically involved cribbing a headline from the newspaper. I only remember this because the teacher got a call from the office to turn on the radio, at which point we heard that planes had struck the towers. The rear end in a top hat sitting next to me started quipping about how, hey, at least now he had a current event if he got called on.

We get enough "I was sitting in some high school class on 9/11" posts on 9/11 every year. I want to hear where people were when Magic Johnson announced he was HIV-positive.

I was 6 years old and watching TV with my family when Oddvar Brå broke his ski pole (a defining moment in Norwegian skiing history).
