Hmm, while I'm thinking about it, does anyone have experience with Monoprice's iPad 2 cases? Sure, they're cheap, but they may be enough.

I'm giving my iPad 2 to my parents when my new iPad arrives. I figure they need a case, so I ordered one of the smartcover + back cover like cases:

It should be here sometime next week. I'll try to remember to post a followup in here, but people generally seem happy with it. I'll also see if it fits the new iPad.

I know everyone is stuck on the $40 price tag for the smart cover which is understandably expensive. I bought my tan leather cover new on eBay for $35 shipped. If you are willing to search eBay you can find one at a reasonable price. I love mine as a cover and the leather has an amazing texture to it, so supple.

I have had my cover replaced once at the fruit stand when the adhesive that hold the magnetic strip gave way. Since the cover has a serial number they replace them on the spot. Something to consider if you like a warranty on your cover.

Strange question, but does the Smart Cover work in bed?

I currently have the iPad 1 version of this CEO Hybrid Case by Marware, and the one feature of it that I've used a lot is how it sits next to my head in bed in a very stable position. I know the Smart Cover has the ability to be a stand like that, but I'm worried it may not quite be able to handle a non-table surface.
Not really. It works fine if the surface is stable and somewhat level but on a bed it flops over. You can fold the cover in half and it can kind of keep hold but that'll be at a lower angle than what you're looking for.

Can anyone recommend a stylus for the ipad? I've heard good things about the Wacom Bamboo and the Adonit Pro, but I'm not sure which one to get.
I have the Adonit Jot, it's decent I guess. The accuracy is more or less there as advertised in use, although I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes since it's still not pixel perfect or anything, like I still zoom in for detailed stuff. The main issue I have with it is that it requires a harder touch than the rubber dome type styluses to trigger the screen, like when writing or drawing there's sometimes gaps in lines as a result of being too light with it. It's also pretty noisy too (tap a metal rod on glass to get the effect) so that's kind of annoying in a quiet setting.

I still prefer it over the rubber dome one I have just cause the lack of friction/drag on it. I got around it with tape on the dome with a piece of tape but that's quite ghetto of course. Also the Jot is more or less sized like a regular pen, vs an inch or two shorter like many styluses, which helps the feel quite a bit. It's kind of weighty although I don't think that has bothered me in use.

I got this rear cover for the hell of it while buying some other stuff. It works with the Smart Cover with some modifications, whether cutting out the side completely or just two notches for the pivot points (which makes it work kind of like a fatter version of this thing).

Hmm, this is a good point. I was debating which of these to use--I'm sure iTunes will work better, but I kind of wanted to try iCloud just to see how it works. But that was before considering the server overload issue.

I guess I can have the iTunes backup ready to go, and abort the iCloud attempt if it becomes frustrating.

I bought that exact case when I got my iPad 2, and it's great. It does seem weird that so much of the bottom is left open, but in my experience, as long as you're just looking for a simple case, this one is perfect. If you need something heavier (say, you like to practice tennis with your iPad as a racquet, I dunno), this is not the case for that.

If you read on that page it says the sender (Apple) has requested future delivery. That means it is going to sit there for a few days.

I'm not sure why they are releasing it next week. There are apparently a lot of them already stateside.

Because of the (tiny, mere formality) hoop they have to jump through for the FCC between when they announce a product and they are allowed to sell it after approval. 9 days is even faster than people expected with the normal minimum being 12 days.

Homework?!

What would be the best way to go with getting the new iPad.

Getting the 4G iPad for 150 bucks more and pay the 30 bucks a month for data

OR

Getting the Wifi iPad save money and just add the 20 dollar tethering plan to my iPhone?

I can't really see a time where I am going to need data access on my iPad and not have my iPhone in my pocket, but I know I want to use data on the iPad when I am not home. Also I think you can use up to 5 devices at a time on the Hotspot so that would be cool if I needed full internet in a pinch.

Is there any reason to not go the second route?

You'll lose quite a bit of battery life from your phone if you end up tethering it often.

I guess it would be more re-sellable later, with the 4G option. If you do a LOT of traveling on a bus or subway, and don't mostly just hang out at work/campus/home where you have wifi, I could see the 4G being necessary. Your phone can only tether so long without being wiped out (battery), so it's really only useful in short bursts or where you have a power outlet to keep your phone charged. (in which case, you are probably near wifi anyway).

So yeah, big public transport commute: maybe the 4G. I can't imagine getting it, myself, but I mostly use it at home, campus, and other places with free wifi.

I would probably only use it sync my kindle books, download the occasional app, reply to an email.

I mainly want the iPad for the bigger screen for watching movies and playing games.

I just have a hard time seeing the benefit to spending 150 more on the device and $10 more a month for the data.

I can see the resell would be better, but then it is that much of a difference to make up for the initial extra $150.

Personally I didn't get the 4G because 90% of the places I go have wifi, and if I'm traveling and I don't have it, I'll look at whatever on my phone or tether it.

Someone earlier in the thread called Apple and they supposedly said he would be getting his iPad on the 16th or "a day or two early". I highly, highly doubt it'll be there the 13th, but it could. Chances are FedEx will have it then and will let it sit in a warehouse while you painfully wait for friday to roll around.

Apple likely doesn't want them to get them to customers early and has explicit instructions for the carriers about that. This poo poo happens every year, stuff gets shipped and held nearby, nearly everyone has to wait until release day.

This right here. Apple tells the parcel delivery companies to hold delivery till x date. That doesn't mean you can stroll in and pick it up either because it's still on hold. They know who they're holding packages for and even if a person at the pick-up were to grab your package, they'd scan it and tell you to beat it. Your chances of getting it a few days are quite exceptional.

I feel sorry for the people manning the counters when people flip their poo poo about not being able to get their Apple device two or three days ahead of release/delivery date.

UPS and FedEx are both handling the shipments, there are so many that neither can handle the massive amount of deliveries alone (presumably)-- it's going to be the same as the 4 and 4s-- most people will get it on the 16th, but a few might get it a day or two early.

I'm in the same boat. My gut tells me I got my preorder in early enough, or am near enough to a cache of ones already in the states designated for shipment, that it will ship out from a warehouse somewhere early this coming week.

Edit: more on topic of the device, I've been reading more on the iPad of late since I work for a large public library system and we now have a poo poo ton of ebooks in the collection. I don't really notice font graininess or my eyes being fatigued after reading for a long period. Curious as to whether the retina display will really have that big of an impact. Longshot question, but does anyone know if the Overdrive app will have to be updated for higher res display of ePub formatted books? I'm not sure how ePub is constructed technically, so curious if the fonts will just automagically render sharper.

Apple has a release date. 3/16.

They do realize poo poo can happen with shipping, and they want to avoid situations where they tell you you get it on the 16th but it comes later. The only way to guarantee that is for them to play it exceptionally safe by shipping way early. That's all there is to it, really.

Some people DO get it a day or so early because you're talking about a billion packages being held. Some are gonna gently caress up and slip through...

This is fairly likely- it seems like a fair number of people who ordered within the first hour or two haven't gotten shipping notices yet, and it's likely because their package is already in the US-- the shipping notice will go out on the 13/14/15 with overnight shipping(most/all of the shipped ones have overnight shipping designations- despite the hold for future delivery notice).
