I know everyone is stuck on the $40 price tag for the smart cover which is understandably expensive. I bought my tan leather cover new on eBay for $35 shipped. If you are willing to search eBay you can find one at a reasonable price. I love mine as a cover and the leather has an amazing texture to it, so supple. I have had my cover replaced once at the fruit stand when the adhesive that hold the magnetic strip gave way. Since the cover has a serial number they replace them on the spot. Something to consider if you like a warranty on your cover.

I've heard good things about the Wacom Bamboo and the Adonit Pro, but I'm not sure which one to get. I still prefer it over the rubber dome one I have just cause the lack of friction/drag on it. I got around it with tape on the dome with a piece of tape but that's quite ghetto of course. Also the Jot is more or less sized like a regular pen, vs an inch or two shorter like many styluses, which helps the feel quite a bit. It's kind of weighty although I don't think that has bothered me in use. Nihiliste posted:Hmm, while I'm thinking about it, does anyone have experience with Monoprice's iPad 2 cases? But that was before considering the server overload issue. I guess I can have the iTunes backup ready to go, and abort the iCloud attempt if it becomes frustrating.

My iPad was picked up today by FedEx and is shipping from PA. Considering I live in DC, will I get it early this week or do all iPads have a drop date of Friday the 16th?

Mine shows up less than 200 miles away, but I really doubt it will be to me early.

There are apparently a lot of them already stateside.

What would be the best way to go with getting the new iPad. Getting the 4G iPad for 150 bucks more and pay the 30 bucks a month for data OR Getting the Wifi iPad save money and just add the 20 dollar tethering plan to my iPhone? I can't really see a time where I am going to need data access on my iPad and not have my iPhone in my pocket, but I know I want to use data on the iPad when I am not home. Also I think you can use up to 5 devices at a time on the Hotspot so that would be cool if I needed full internet in a pinch. Is there any reason to not go the second route?

I guess it would be more re-sellable later, with the 4G option. If you do a LOT of traveling on a bus or subway, and don't mostly just hang out at work/campus/home where you have wifi, I could see the 4G being necessary. Your phone can only tether so long without being wiped out (battery), so it's really only useful in short bursts or where you have a power outlet to keep your phone charged. (in which case, you are probably near wifi anyway). So yeah, big public transport commute: maybe the 4G. I can't imagine getting it, myself, but I mostly use it at home, campus, and other places with free wifi.

Is the drain that bad? I would probably only use it sync my kindle books, download the occasional app, reply to an email. I mainly want the iPad for the bigger screen for watching movies and playing games. I just have a hard time seeing the benefit to spending 150 more on the device and $10 more a month for the data. I can see the resell would be better, but then it is that much of a difference to make up for the initial extra $150.

So once it's in a local FedEx depot, can you just wander down there and say 'hey you guys have a package for me'? Would they care about letting you have it early or would they tell you to take a hike?

Tethering from my iPhone 4 really doesn't drain the battery as much as people say it does. Maybe like a percent every 2-4 min or so. Sounds like a lot,but multiply that by 100 and I think for email/light downloading or syncing it will be fine.

Apple likely doesn't want them to get them to customers early and has explicit instructions for the carriers about that. This poo poo happens every year, stuff gets shipped and held nearby, nearly everyone has to wait until release day. And a bunch of people get probated.

Apple tells the parcel delivery companies to hold delivery till x date. That doesn't mean you can stroll in and pick it up either because it's still on hold. They know who they're holding packages for and even if a person at the pick-up were to grab your package, they'd scan it and tell you to beat it. Your chances of getting it a few days are quite exceptional. I feel sorry for the people manning the counters when people flip their poo poo about not being able to get their Apple device two or three days ahead of release/delivery date.

UPS and FedEx are both handling the shipments, there are so many that neither can handle the massive amount of deliveries alone (presumably)-- it's going to be the same as the 4 and 4s-- most people will get it on the 16th, but a few might get it a day or two early.

Edit: more on topic of the device, I've been reading more on the iPad of late since I work for a large public library system and we now have a poo poo ton of ebooks in the collection. I don't really notice font graininess or my eyes being fatigued after reading for a long period. Curious as to whether the retina display will really have that big of an impact. Longshot question, but does anyone know if the Overdrive app will have to be updated for higher res display of ePub formatted books? Apple has a release date. 3/16. They do realize poo poo can happen with shipping, and they want to avoid situations where they tell you you get it on the 16th but it comes later. The only way to guarantee that is for them to play it exceptionally safe by shipping way early. That's all there is to it, really. Some people DO get it a day or so early because you're talking about a billion packages being held. Some are gonna gently caress up and slip through...

An additional business day to overnight it so that you may get it the 16th. Seriously chill the gently caress out. Again it doesn't deliver/release until March 16th 2012 and today is March 11th, a non-business day, 2012. They have a good four business days to get things shipped. Yes I know you're excited and anxious as much as I am. Chill. The gently caress. Out.
