An obvious example would be web pages that use images for text headers etc. Its not that images look worse, its that the text looks so much better by comparison.

Just snap a picture with your hand over the camera to get an all black image. Then you can full-screen it in the photo viewer. This is how they did it when I took mine to the store.

I'm really interested in how long it takes to fully charge the new iPad. If the AC charger is exactly the same as the iPad 2 then presumably it will take twice as long to charge?

Crackbone posted:That's the dev not sizing assets properly vs. issues with pixel doubling. The actual problem is that non-Retina OpenGL apps scale using Bilinear as a default, whereas non-Retina standard UIKit/Quartz apps scale using Nearest Neighbour. This is mainly due to an assumption on Apple's behalf that OpenGL stuff is mainly going to be 3D (Apple even recommend you render at 1.5x rather than 2x if you're having performance issues in OpenGL, which would look terrible for 2D stuff). But a lot of sprite stuff ends up being done through OpenGL via Cocos2d. On top of this there was a bug where setting kCAFilterNearest didn't actually work unless you drew a 1x1 rectangle at (0.0001, 0.0001), and that particular code which had worked fine suddenly started loving up and horizontally flipping all PNGs on iPads once iOS 4.2 came out, meaning there are probably a number of apps out that that specifically skip the nearest-neighbour resizing code entirely on the iPad. I'm not a game dev, and I'm not exactly sure what the situation on iOS 5 is, but traditionally there's been a little more work if you want your non-Retina, OpenGL app to look the same on retina and non-retina devices. Hopefully now kcaFilterNearest just works, but I'm sure there are a few apps out there that skip that code entirely on iPads due to the iOS 4.2 bug, but bug or not, any half-decent dev can scale their art manually or at the very, very least, manually create nearest-neighbour 2x versions.

One possible issue with just pumping out 2x assets (other than kind of being a waste of space) is memory. Not sure what the hell they're doing (other than using a shitload of sprites?) but Cave's games require the 256MB devices, while 512MB is apparently the requirement for their high res games. Not sure if straight 2x assets would get compressed back down in memory or what but I imagine there's at least a bit of an overhead. Never heard about that 1.5x trick, I was recently wondering if that was possible on iOS actually. I could see devs taking that route with the new screen for 3D stuff if their game is too much for the GPU at full resolution (like some PS3/360 outputting sub HD), it should still look better than just dropping completely down to 1024x768.

This is going to be my first ipad on friday so excuse the question but how common is scratching on the back of the ipad? I'm considering using it as my replacement netbook so I'd be taking it around in my bag frequently with a keyboard of some sort and I wasn't sure if I should be worried about getting some sort of back protector in addition to the smart cover or whatever dock I end up using.

It really depends on a lot of factors, but my iPad 1 back is scratched, dented, and banged up. I honestly could give a poo poo as long as the screen looks nice. For those who want their product always looking new, I'd suggest at least a slip case when transporting inside a bag with other junk in it.

Question about maximising the life of the battery. Am I supposed to run it all the way down the first time I get it, fully charge and do that once a month or so? It's pretty impossible to run the battery down out of the box because it needs to be plugged into a computer through USB to set it up, which will charge it.

If you KNOW you want a keyboard to go with it - as in you've tried the onscreen keyboard before - you might just consider getting a keyboard case. Either way I would get something that protects both sides of the iPad. This is what I'm considering, based on the great reviews for the previous version: http://www.switcheasy.com/product.p...NVAS_ThenewiPad

I had something on the back of my 2 for a while that was the same sort of thing. It fit very snug on the 2, so if this thing is designed for the 2 and is snug, it may have issues with the new iPad. That said, if they're claiming it works with it I imagine they know what they're talking about. Very tempted to take my smart cover back and get this instead.

I decided against going and waiting in line or driving around like a madman trying to find an iPad left over at a store .. Guess I'll see you in 2-3 weeks Mr 32GB iPad .. the dent out of my account hurts though. First tablet that has REALLY peaked my interest. Ordering online also got me around $15 off due to corporate discount, every little bit helps. mAlfunkti0n fucked around with this message at Mar 14, 2012 around 16:03 |

I'm starting to kick myself for only getting the 16 gig version. I may gamble with waiting in line Friday for the 32. What's the return policy for used iPads? If the line is long I may just keep the 16 and return/sell if the space isn't enough.

So you have 2 weeks from Friday to take it back to a fruit stand, even if you bought it online. But seeing as how things are backordered, I'd imagine you'd be just as able to sell it on Craigslist on par with what you paid, or even a small profit.

Apple Stores have the highest stock, always. They also have the largest line, people that are there for the publicity/vibes. Radio Shack, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Sams Clubs are all supposed to be getting it. AT&T and Verizon stores do normally get some, but only in the 4G model of the carrier store. However, The Non-Apple-B&M Stores are usually light on stock. The Best Buy I went to last year had only 25 units, all Wifi, and was hit or miss on some colors/sizes. Your best bet is to try to call ahead and find out 1) If they have them, 2) When they open, 3) Do they have your model that you want (This is a big maybe). You may not get anywhere when calling ahead, but you might. Its always a safe bet to just ring the store and they may be more open to you. There is one MASSIVE difference from last year: The ONLY way you could get an iPad 2 on launch day was to sit in line at a B&M store. The first preorders didn't ship out until the Tuesday after the Friday launch. There's going to be a large chunk of people that are going to be getting their iPads at their front door. This will help with lines. FlashBangBob fucked around with this message at Mar 14, 2012 around 16:29 |
