My custard took longer to cool than I thought it would, but the trifle is finally done! The first three layers are homemade chocolate cake (terrifying, I almost never make cake from scratch) done in cupcake tins, homemade raspberry stuff. I can't remember the name right now. Stewed fruit and sugar. That. And fresh cut strawberries:  Custard added! It separated a tiny bit at the end when I was rushed for time. It's a pity, but it wasn't so bad I had to toss it, it still tasted good! I topped it with more cake and one of the least-attractive meringues I've ever made (I promise I can make them correctly I don't know what happened  )  And now, after 12+ hours of schoolwork, 6 hours of work and three interspersed hours of harried cooking, I am going to drink, since I missed National Get Drunk Day yesterday.

Here's my flan! I thought I had hosed up the caramel and overcooked it but it turned out great! This one actually looks a little ugly cause some of the custard got on top of the caramel when I scraped it out of the ramekin.

Since it was too late to eat it, I put my midnight custard in the fridge, then bought some apple cake at a DC bakery the next day. I'm not clear on how to top something with creme anglaise and have it look nice. Sure was delicious, though. And yes, I could've strained out the saffron threads, but do you know how much they cost? Look at them, dammit! Look at those expensive spices!

Twenty years from now Ricola is going to emerge from a hole in the ground wearing a filthy apron and a five foot long beard, holding in his left hand what he has been working on non-stop for the last two decades, the Custard of Custards. Scotch Eggs, adapted for a sweet palate. First, rinse some short-grain brown rice and steam it up with coconut milk.  Next, wrap up some frozen Cadbury creme eggs in that rice. I used plastic wrap to form a ball around the egg, similar to an onigiri. I stuck them back in the freezer for awhile.  Having no idea what I was doing, I hoped that rolling them in flour would allow them to crisp up when deep-fried.  Final results. I admit that I actually tried half of one, since the combined smell of coconut milk rice, melting chocolate and fried bread product was appealing. If I had to make this recipe again (and I was forced on pain of death to include Cadbury eggs), I would probably add a layer of breading to the whole deal. The surviving coconut milk rice is getting mixed with a little milk and sugar, probably, since one of the housemates has unrelated food poisoning.
