Yep there was an episode that had Angel turn into a puppet.

I actually watched it while it was on the air, but jumping back into season three and having forgotten all of the context, it is WAY weirder than I remembered.

Aaaanyways, I was thinking about Don's fiancee today (having only finished watching last night, so I'm sure this has all been discussed already, but whatevs). I kind of think season 4 was a lot of Don being sick of being with uber-dependent women and looking for someone who could take charge somehow. I mean his first sex scene of the season was demanding that a woman slap him in the face... so then there was Faye, who could run her own poo poo, and then there was Megan, who could run HIS poo poo. Not just the 'good with kids' thing, but the way he got her to control his drinking, stuff like that. I think he's looking for a mom for himself.

Maybe, but how much of that is Megan and how much is Don? I mean, I don't think Megan controlled Don's drinking as much as Don allowed Megan to control his drinking. There is a difference. He could have said "stop me at three" to anybody...it was his choice to ask for help there.

I watched one episode, and it had a very serious plot where Angel and Cordelia were rescuing someone, but they were doing shtick all the way there. It can either be goofy or serious, pick one people.

This is why.

I love that line. "Sterling Cooper has more failed artists and intellectuals than the Third Reich." Foreshadowing the irrelevance of Kinsey? Or just lamenting the hiring practices?

Actually... as head of creative, wouldn't he have hiring and firing power over the writers and artists? But then, I could totally see him neglecting those duties because it bored him.

Kartheiser somehow stopped being Connor for me in Season 2 or so and is now forever Pete Campbell. He rose above the Whedon-y tripe and went on to do great things, like the Chip n' Dip.

Too tired to chase fences right now.

I think Cambell is the best character for me because he really feels like the only actor there who BELONGS in that time period. Every other actor I can tell is trying desperately to look like they belong in the 60's, but for some reason, the actor playing Campbell to me looks like they plucked him straight out of the 60's, sent him packing in a time machine to present day, and gave him a job.

He really did and watching Angel is weird now since I expect him to be awesome like Pete Campbell instead of Connor.

I'm actually a big fan of Angel. In fact, I'm currently rewatching it on Netflix due to lack of anything else new to watch, but hey, different strokes.

Anyway: I think I follow the same formula as others. I hated Campbell at the beginning, but he grew on me. I think part of it has to do when he stops treating his wife like poo poo. I know men treating women as property is kind of "the thing" in the 60's, but it also seemed like they wanted to portray Campbell as kind of the antagonist of the show. He tries to blackmail Don, he's always angsty about being passed over, and he treats his wife terribly.

But he seems to come around as he and Don start to respect each other more, and he starts showing his wife a little more respect and dignity, he grows on ya.

I still miss Paul, personally.

In fairness, if we don't hold Don's serial womanizing against him, you can't hold it against Pete too much. He still treats Trudy a lot better, doesn't snap at her as often, doesn't treat her like poo poo for no reason, etc. Guys in the 60s like getting play on the side, but Pete handles himself so much better than he did in the first season, so I think he's a lot more enjoyable to watch.

But, again, I appear to be crazy and liked him as Connor too. But alas.

Antony played guitaaaaaaaaar!!

I've been a fan of Mad Men since it started, I'm a student of American History and this period is probably my favorite. If you want to read an incredibly engaging tome about the period, check out Nixonland by Rick Pearlstein, it will fill in a lot of the societal blanks that the show brilliantly fades to the background.

Does anyone have any guesses on when the new season takes place? Given that last season ended around October '65, and considering the layover between seasons, I'd guess it picks up in Spring of '67. In the intervening time America has really turned on it's head. The antiwar movement is in full swing, with Dr. King finally coming out in support of the movement. The civil rights movement has taken a radical turn, as riots have happened in Detroit, Cleveland, and Newark, and new leaders like Stokely Carmicheal and Huey Newton are preaching a message of militance over non-violence. Meanwhile LSD and hippie culture have stormed mainstream America, and Sgt. Peppers, Are You Experienced, and a slew of other earth shattering rock albums will be released. Point is historically we are getting to "The Sixties" as we know them in popular culture, and I can't wait!

Also, Don on acid? It could happen.

I think Pete is forced by the expectations of his upbringing and society to be a certain way, and he rebels against it. Not necessarily because he's deep down a really nice guy intentionally, or he's trying to better himself...he's just on a kind of slow drift towards being progressive. If you asked him if he was a progressive he's deny it up and down, but he's moving in that direction. Though not without his flaws.

Do we know that there will be a time jump at all? That would mean skipping over everyone's reaction to Joan's pregnancy, Don's wedding, etc., plus a whole year of escalation in Vietnam. Not saying they WON'T skip a year, but do we actually know if they will?

I don't know if they will, but I really hope they do. I've always liked that Mad Men has been willing to skip fairly long periods of time. It's a show that is mainly about people's personal struggles, and I don't think there is much to gain by showing Don & Megan being happy newlyweds. Although, pregnant Joan might be interesting, depending on where her husband is.

I only forgive Matt for that because he picked a good Betty actress to play Betty. But I still want an extended behind-the-scene video about January and Kiernan playing those awful Betty/Sally scenes. I want to believe they're buddies IRL to be able to play out those scenes as good as they did.
