I was caught off guard and couldn't write any names down, but that sounds like my first Journey on Tuesday night. At the flying part I lost sight of my buddy immediately and spent about a minute wandering around trying to find him before giving up and resolving to just wait for him at the end. When I finally got there he was just standing on the ledge looking at me. Then we walked into the light together. It was a pretty wonderful note to end the game on, but on my second playthrough I wasn't having any of it and I stuck to my new buddy like glue.

I can't help but imagine that happened to a lot of people, though. It seems really easy to lose track of a friend while flying around like crazy, and the cliff at the end seemed practically designed for waiting and staring wistfully into the distance on. Subtle stuff like that is probably what makes the game feel as powerful as it does.

My buddy never made it.

He never appeared at the end flying scene. So it was just me.. Kawaiiest420 died for my sins and allowed me to carry on

A lot of people seem to have a similar experience during the snow area. My snow area play-through was particularly sad. I met a new partner in the snow area. He never chirped at me, yet I was always chirping at him to regenerate his scarf. At one point, he wanted to go north. I wanted to go East. So we parted ways. As soon as he left me, I was attacked by the dragon twice. My scarf was almost gone, and I never met anyone else from that point forward. It felt really defeating when your partner doesn't like you, and abandons you at the time you need him most. I had no one to help me stay warm, or regenerate my scarf. I completed the game. Alone.

Though, it makes me feel a bit better that I got a more unique experience.

Journey is the only game I've played where your narrative is determined by how someone else plays the game. That's...something.

Don't know how I feel about the game overall but the experience and the surface level glamour certainly impress.

Just went through two play throughs, and my second partner was ON TOP OF IT. I was exploring near the cloth bridge and I saw a companion in the distance, and I hurried over. We collected a ton of scarf extensions and managed to flawlessly perfect infinite-glide by synchronizing our singing mid-flight. We pretty much bombed all over the second portion of that map (the one where you free the flying carpets for the first time).

I messaged him after the game talking about how awesome it was and he messaged back saying I was his "greatest journey partner ever."

Game feels goood. :3

Well son, a funny thing about regret is that it's better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done

Got my white robes (lots of fun, BTW) and played "mentor" to someone who looked to be on their second run. Met them in the very first chapter and they were pretty excited. Every time I took them to a harder-to-find thing, they ran around in circles, chirping like mad. We stuck together to the end and they were the only name on my list.

I love being able to share things that other players have shown me, like sneaking through the scary parts. (Though we did get hit trying to run to the last shelter before the archway. The wind blew us back and we got spotted before we could make it there in time. Still scary.) It's like paying the good deeds forward. I probably would avoid spoiling it for first runs though, I think making some of your own discoveries and experiencing that with another new player is best.

All I have left now is the wait-a-week achievement. Thank you goons for letting me share (and even sharing!) my experiences, none of my IRL friends have played/are likely to play this.

Just finished one of my better sessions. Met up with a guy with a name like semiconductor. I showed him where some of the glowy orbs were hidden and he got to following me all over , even when I got us lost in the desert when I lost track of direction haha.

If you're a goon, sorry I lost track of you in that temple with the cloth whale, buddy. Hope you had fun with your awesome scarf.

This loving game though. I actually spent the rest of the game missing my first companion, despite him looking just like all the others I came across and me not knowing anything about him/her.

The final level was spent for me with a guy who deemed me a moving energy source and nothing more. He'd carry on ahead without me, stopping only to snap some energy from me before running off again. In the final scene, he was so far ahead it was eerie trying to catch up to him. I finally did, just in time to collapse dead by his side

This loving game man! It's given me different emotional payback every time...so far though it's always been bitter-sweet. I'd love to make it through a game with just one companion.

Now the wild world is lost, in a desert of smoke and straight lines.

Just completed my second run through from start to finish.

Unlike my first game, in which I went through the whole one with just one companion (only for him to disappear on the very final stage), this time round I met up with eight other people. Although it only felt like about three.

First companion just stood still in the first area, so I ignored him to go hunting for orbs.

The second one must have been on his first play through, because he kept getting stuck in a few places and couldn't work out how to "climb" cloth. I helped him as best I could, then led him to safety through the underground area.

I guess I lost him somewhere around the indoor tower, because he disappeared for a while, then reappeared with a huge-rear end scarf, so I guess that was someone else taking over. I thought I was with this new person for the rest of the game, but I guess I changed companions a few more times after that.

I made a couple of mistakes during the snow climb, first leading my companion off a cliff so we had to start again, then making a run for it when I shouldn't and getting both our humongous scarves shredded by a dragon.

Still, I got more orbs this time. Probably didn't get them all, but we'll wait for another session to catch those.

In case any of my previous eight companions are on here, my PSN ID is Retroblique.

Wow! I got the white robe after a playthrough tonight so I decided, what the hell, I'd do a back-to-back play just to get a feel for the new duds.

I got paired up with a guy who'd played at least a couple times, so he knew where stuff was. We worked pretty well together, and had a lot of fun! I finally got to play through the whole game with the same person, and it was an amazing experience.

I went to friend him after the game ended. Just as i was typing my request, I got his buddy request in my inbox

I've never experienced a game like this. It's less like a video game and more like a beloved book. You just want to share it, and you want to talk about it, and you want to watch as someone experiences it for themselves. Not having to help the other person somehow makes it...I don't know, easier or more fun to help. The freedom to go or to wait makes patience easier somehow. I don't know if I make any sense, but this game is really something amazing.

Anyway I just played through twice in a row instead of eating, gonna have to do that now.

edit: also, remember how at the end during the credits when you're a shooting star, backtracking through all the levels? If you glide high enough at the right moment during the sand surfing level (towards the last leg of the second surf, I believe), you can actually spot a shooting star floating through the air, just like during the credits. I love everything about this game.

Yeah, I've definitely seen this happening in different places and I think you're right. Reminds me of in Dark Souls, there are two bells you have to ring, and if you're playing online, you can hear it in your game whenever somebody out there on the internet rings the bell. That particular star seems to be scripted to happen, as the glowing symbol won't actually show up until the star impacts at its location. Interpret the significance of that as you will.

The fact that I may have shown up in one of your games as a star is a super cool prospect to me, if only as another dimension in which the game becomes a shared experience.

Pretty sure that always happens if you time it right. There are two stars one leads you to the flower and the other does what you mentioned.

I've seen a very close shooting star in the bit where you slide though the corridor looking sideways out over the town at sunset.

I played a game earlier today with 1 person the whole way though and it really is quite amazing what that does. I have no idea why.

Yeah, I noticed that they were triggered by walking in that direction, I just hadn't see one land until then. It's also the first time I made the connection between the glowing symbols and your name each journey. I really like how open to interpretation it is and how the lore is told. My interpretation (apologies in advance):

"In the beginning, life came forth from the Great Mountain. All lived in peace and harmony, until the people began to harness the power of the land and use the other creatures for their own gain. Great cities rose and prospered. But the balance had been tipped, and the people fell to war. Terrible machines ended a great number of journeys until there was no one left to fight. The cities crumbled and over an immeasurable time were covered by the sands, all but forgotten. Go now, traveler, and take what you have learned back to the Great Mountain. Share our history with all whom you meet so that it is not repeated and the memory of our people may live on.

P.S. The trek back up the mountain's gonna be a bitch.

You get it by:Find all of the glowing symbols, it actually has some extra effects to it as well.

Also this is a pretty great game, already played through it like 5 times. It's really interesting how you change your play-style depending on who you are playing with. It's always a weird balancing game of trying to figure out if they are a new player or not and if you should show them stuff or not.

Look at the hem of their robe. A total new player will having nothing. Gold thread patterns appear the more playthroughs you get. Stops at after the third time.

Did my 4th run today. Was so lonely. Met one person briefly in the underground but they vanished before the stone snakes . Didnt see another person until the tower level. They kept swimming around in the chamber looking for the flOw creature. I got so worried trying to show them how to get it that they would think I was trying to rush them along.

They chirped so much after getting it made me smile so much. Pretty sure they stayed with me to the end.

The white robe will recharge your scarf while on the ground and adds what appears to be 2-3 lengths. It gets ridiculously long with all the glyphs.

Just bought & finished the game, I'm stunned.

I didn't realize that there were other people around until around ~20 minutes in, and I didn't realize the game only paired you up with one person at a time until around the halfway point, which is a shame.

Once I figured it all out though, it was fantastic. Once I got to the snow area I found another guy with just one stripe on his robe, which I assumed meant he was playing for his first time like me, and we worked really well together. At first we sort of stumbled around exploring independently, but keeping one another in sight. Then when we got to the super windy area we both figured out we needed to stay close to one another to keep warm and it was a really cool experience.

We were running from shelter to shelter, just making it in time to avoid the shark monsters, and whenever either of us ended up more than a few feet from the other we quickly ran back together. Just me and my buddy huddling for warmth and trying to stay alive. I'm glad it worked out that way the first time for me, because it ended up being an immensely heartwarming moment.

Then I lost my buddy in the next area and never managed to find him again. Having to climb the final slope alone so soon after that shifted the emotional impact of that area dramatically. The fantastic thing about this game is that for all the different ways that could have played out, I can imagine an entirely different but still significant emotional payoff.

It reminds me a lot of Dark Souls for some reason. I suppose it's a combination of the similarly destitute settings and the limited tools of interaction you're given for your dealings with other players.

I just beat the game on my first sitting, and for most of the journey I travelled with the same companion. We really struck a chord and it was really fun to play with him. When there was beautiful scenery, we both stood still and admired it, when we travelled through the monster's then we both ran as far to the side we could so we never were even close to the monsters, and we rode on the "whale" for several minutes. At one point he had the game paused for ten minutes but I waited for him to return. When he did, he jumped around and chirped happily At the end we walked into the light side by side, but really, only a monster wouldn't wait for his/her companion.

The point with this post is that after we beat the game he sent me a PSN message which said "Thank you for making my journey special",
and it just felt great to receive something like that instead of the usual rage/hate messages

A short, but great game.

EDIT: I lost my first partner when I jumped off the big bridge to get one of the glowy things. He didn't wait for me, and it felt horrible!
After that, I decided to stay with my partner at all times.

First play-through was fantastic - especially that moment where you're sliding along with the sunset and the camera pans to a side-on view... so breathtaking, and at one point your character starts sliding backwards .

The ending sequence is probably the single greatest scene I've played in a game. First time round I had to experience that part myself... but on the second time having a companion to fly along with made it so much better.

Having completed it both by myself and with someone it's quite touching walking into the light alongside someone.

It wasn't. As good as that song is, I cant see it replacing anything in game unless they added a new area. I could sorta see it working for the end somewhere but it cant top that end sequence theme.

Did yet another go today. To my surprise I met a fellow white robe. It was like letting two kids loose in a candy shop. We probably wore out our chirp and flight buttons. Met right at bridge level and stayed together straight to the end. Even drew a few things in the sand right before walking into the light. Was as enjoyable as my very first run with 1 person the whole way, though on a different level.

It was in raw form. Foontum if you're a goon, that was superb.

Where are you guys meeting all the cool people? On my first playthrough I had seven loving people and they all sucked. The first jerk just sat around and wouldn't move. I was having some fun with another guy in that underground tower thing but when we got to the end he just kept flying around and wouldn't move on. I couldn't see if he was doing anything constructive or not so I just went ahead without him. The snow part was probably my favorite because of the high levels of . I made it through with one person (I think) mostly but at the on the happy flying time part at the end I accidentally ran out of juice and got stuck somewhere. rear end in a top hat went ahead with out me and I had to finish alone. I tried hard to be cooperative with people, wait for them if they got stuck, etc. but I only got jerks I guess.

Overall I don't think I'm as impressed as everyone else is. It's a very pretty game but your whole experience depending on who you get paired with is a double-edged sword for sure.

Pointlessly optimistic speculation here: maybe they were hoping you'd sit down too so you could both get the meditation trophy? I helped a player get that one after they showed me where the hidden flower was -- I did a lot of chirping and jumping around beforehand though, trying to get them to understand what I was doing. It's interesting all the weird ways you find to communicate and how often it actually comes across.
