I get the feeling that Bioware isn't going to retcon the ending -- they'll probably shove the criticisms aside with "You just don't get it!" or "No, it's okay, we'll totally explain this (in our upcoming Mass Effect spin-off)." Between this and the entirety of Dragon Age 2, I really have no faith in the company. If, somehow, they change the ending into something good, I will gladly eat my words, but I don't see it happening.

So has there been any word from Bioware as of late? Are they still going with that teasing "keep your saves" stuff, or have they clammed up?

No, because the ending was a nonsensical, poorly written, pseudo-intellectual mess. Also, what computer parts said.

So I guess the best ways to change the ending would be to:

1. Get rid of Starchild completely -- it's stupid and gives way too much info about the Reapers' motivations.

2. Put in an ending where Shepard survives and everyone's happy, put in a downer ending, etc. That is, actual multiple endings, not just changing the color of explosions.

3. Make Harbinger more of the central villain -- possible boss fight? It's built up as the oldest and most powerful Reaper, so it would make sense to have it be the final enemy. As it is, Harbinger may as well not exist.

4. Have the War Assets actually mean something.

5. In general, have the ending fit thematically with the rest of the franchise.

6. Epilogue telling the player what happened to the other characters.

Anything I missed?

Maybe I'm being extremely cynical, but I'm guessing any ending DLC will just put in some cut content (like the questioning the Starchild) and maybe some text saying that everything was okay because (insert stupid reason here). It will fundamentally remain unchanged.

Which would be a very stupid move by Bioware, but hey, they seem to have missed the crux of the argument thus far, so it wouldn't be surprising.

My god, they're going to make this worse, aren't they. They're going to either ignore the complaints completely or rush out a half-assed conclusion that makes everything all happy and stupid, even though being downbeat is the least of the ending's problems. And they're going to be about it the entire time.

All my hope and faith for the ending lies in the writers. I seriously do not believe that they don't see the flaws in the original ending, and they don't know what fans want and how to fix it and such.

I'll believe that management and hudson/walters and such won't let them fix things, but I mean...I have faith in this writing team. Just pretty much no one else on the Bioware staff.

It's a vicious cycle. When this whole thing started people said, "Well, maybe Bioware will release the real ending in DLC!" Then when it was revealed this was the actual, planned ending, people said, "Well, there's a big outrage over this. Surely Bioware will listen to the fans!" Now that Bioware has released a statement saying they wouldn't change anything because of "artistic integrity" and would only "clarify" certain things, people are saying, "Well, maybe the writers will manage to salvage this!"

I would doubt Bioware if it told me the sky was blue. I certainly don't think they'll salvage this thing and make a satisfying, coherent ending.

Man, I cannot believe I forced myself to play this again, just to see if the ending was as bad as I remembered. Yeah, it was. Funny thing, there's a lot of things wrong with the game before that, but I was willing to overlook almost all of them. EDI's sexbot body? Fine. Joker being awful and having bulging eyes? Fine. Kai Leng? Fine. TIM becoming Saren 2.0? Fine. Legion's personality suddenly changing between games? Fine. Your old squad being reduced to cameos? Fine. The weird bugs and glitches? Fine. Pointless fetch quests? Fine. Harbinger becoming a footnote? Eh, okay. No krogan shipmate? That's a deal breaker.

But goddamn, that ending. The first time I saw it I was slackjawed at the sheer laziness and shittiness of it. The second time? Same reaction. gently caress, it's terrible. I don't know how I would begin to fix it. Sure, getting rid of the kid with his stupid face and bad voice acting is a good start, but where do you go from there?

Honestly, there's a fair amount of the game that needs to be rewritten. A good move, as some have mentioned, would've been to add another installment entirely, maybe have one game focus on Cerberus and the other on the Reaper invasion. As it is, Cerberus is shoved into the background and TIM is reduced to a mustache-twirling psychopath that doesn't really do anything except shake his fist and yell "SHEPARD!"

Another idea is to hold off on the invasion for a while -- give the player a chance to feel the tension and false sense of security present in galactic society. Start with isolated colonies being wiped out, then, at some point -- BOOM! -- the big push on the homeworlds. As it is, there's no sense of urgency. Sure, millions of people are dying every day, but I have to retrieve the Sacred Dingus of Xqwystlp!

There are a lot of other things that need fixing, but I'm too tired and frustrated to list them all.

I have no idea what they were going for with the Reapers -- in the first two games, they're these super-advanced AIs that see themselves as the pinnacle of evolution and all organic life as weak, stupid, and fodder for harvesting or destroying. You see this through the conversations with Sovereign and Harbinger: they don't care what you say, you're an insect to be crushed. They're powerful, incomprehensible, and evil.

Then in ME3 they turn into generic monsters that go HOOOOONNNKK and secretly save organic life through galactic genocide. What the gently caress.

^^^Yeah, it's making me angry again too.

e: It's obvious Synthesis was intended to be the "best" ending, because That loving Kid rambles about how it's the final evolution of life, the cycle will end, blah de blah. Doesn't matter that it makes no sense, it's the best!
