I have to start by agreeing with this. It is a great post-apocalyptic name, likely has pretty good Something Awful internal recognition without seeming stupid to the casual gamer--in fact, I bet the name would be pretty appealing to the average player. Obviously we would not get to decide what the Helldump was, but there are so many good potential options!

signalnoise posted:

So I was thinkin it might work out in everyone's favor if everyone that was actually going to buy themselves a gang tag would give the money to Axemaniac instead to get this artifact/location in game.
Also agreeing with this. It is for the common good! We always love the common good!

At first I was pretty much sold on "Four Balls Bar" on the edge of a cliff somewhere, but a seedy shithole called Helldump really does sound both thematically correct and still ties in with SA.

I'm in for at least towards this.

You could also make Quarex a character in the game, something which has apparently needed to happen for like 25 years.

I think Helldump is a great idea! And the SAclopedia and grenade that does something awful as a collectible are both great ideas. We get to write the back stories of these collectibles, so here is Masonity's idea for the SAclopedia (italics are my writing):

quote:

A book containing the worst aspects of the pre-apocalyptic world, assumed by many to be a warning to the future. The dense tome speaks of unearthly, strange things, and after skimming its pages, you come away learning one thing: people before the apocalypse had far too much time on their hands.
My idea for the SA grenade (it has to be inactive for it to be a collectible, otherwise it would be a weapon):

quote:

A large black grenade, the pin of which has rusted tight to the handle, making it unusable. Its engraving doesn't list its explosive power, only that it will do "Something Awful". Holding it in your hands makes you feel like you may poo poo your pants and tell hundreds of people about it.
These are just ideas, people. The bolding I added where the text could be replaced with a different SA reference.

I'm going to go ahead and call goon contributions to be at least $16,000, and this current drive will probably put us closer to $20k.

Also, Quarex, I've heard of Wasteland, but I've never played or or really cared to until this thread. But I loved the "good" Fallout games (I also loved 3 ) and I have put an inordinate amount of time into FO:NV (more than I shuold admit to... ok, over 300 hours), so that's why I am going to contribute to this SA drive, even though I've spent more than I should.

Aww, that is great. Thanks, man, and you have put a lot of effort into keeping people informed without even a personal stake in the realm of infinite nostalgia! I only played New Vegas for like 100 hours, and I think a lot of that was "realizing I needed to finish a paper and leaving the game paused for hours at a time." You have some nice dedication. In many ways!

Why couldn't this Kickstarter have happened last year, when I still had disposable income instead of a baby daughter and a house to pay off?
Pledged 15$ (last week), maybe I'll up it to the 55$ tier later. Or send money to AxeManiac if this SA thing is going to happen.

The original Wasteland was the second game I ever bought for the C64 (the first was Zak McKracken); I learned English playing these games, although I guess not fast enough, since I had no idea what a "canteen" was, so I sold all of them and wondered why my party kept dieing while they trekked through the desert

I guess I'll have to dig out my cassette player as well, and the tape I listened to while playing Wasteland (a compliation of TV show themes, I still associate Hawaii 5-0 with wandering through post-nuclear Las Vegas).

I like references better when they're less obvious. I'd get rid of the "Something Awful" line altogether. If everyone did a description exactly like that, we'd all be groaning at the various references to forums/people/etc. Like "Helldump", the people that understand the reference should have no problems getting it, and the people that don't shouldn't think it's anything but a genuine part of the game world.

References are best done when you catch that it's a reference only if you get the reference.

Another option is asking Rope Kid what he would do. I thought the references in New Vegas were really good, not too subtle, not too blatant.

I do like Helldump though. Something like a garbage dump, infested by mutants, with a crazy dude wandering around complaining about low taxes.
