I dont like their new singer, I thought the original guy on the first album was much better, and then they had someone else and it appears another vocalist has taken over?

color of sleep and scepter of <stupid metal phrase here> are probably my favorite songs.

Other great aussie metal acts are gently caress...Im dead, Blood Duster, and the classic Ebolie (parody of metal and culture in general)

I have been a part of the Sydney music scene for a few years now, although Im currently between bands. Live music in sydney has suffered some blows recently with the demise of the Excelsior (pretty much every sydney band has played there more than once), the hopetoun (tho I was never a fan) and the Sando and Annandale hotels on the chopping block. I cant say I would be disappointed to see the Annandale go - recently its been a bunch of lovely promoters booking massive 'festival' bills that suck rear end to go to and suck rear end to play at because no one is there and its always horrible acts. The Gaelic club just shut its doors to live acts too

I feel like venues wouldnt have such a hard time putting on bands if bands were willing to play for free. If you can play for free and scrap the cover charge youll see more people at shows. Then once you have a following move on to bigger venues and start selling tickets - its hard to get an audience when people dont want to spend $15 to try you out for a 20min set.

And I've been liking the Annandale, especially the bills put on by Blood Sweat & Beers. It looks close to being saved; they're not going to sell it at least and Peter Garrett has been talking them up.

It is pretty bad though. The best hope is warehouse venues like Dirty Shirlows and Red Rattler.

I play bass. Im not really looking to join a new band as I am working with my brother on stuff.

Screaming sundays and a string of other annandale festivals are all poo poo for both punters and bands. We played it once and swore off it ever again. Tried to tell us we had to presell 50 tickets to a 30min set at 4pm on a sunday? and if we didnt sell them we had to pay for the ones we didnt sell? yeah, Ill buy a brick, and put it through your loving windows you cunts. thats not how music works.

dont even get me started about pay to play poo poo like emergenza or Valve bar festivals.

For those that dont know, or do know, or whatever, Bob Log is an Australian resident now too. I make the effort to see him whenever hes in town (usually playing in cronulla at the brass monkey) and its always a good show. he was on last night but it kinda blew because there was literally me and 5 other people there including the bar staff, but i got a chance to talk to him for a bit after the show and have a few laughs.

if you havent seen him, please check him out, hes a great all round performer.

I'm dumbfounded to hear that there are no decent venues in Sydney? Even here in Adelaide there is somewhere to go. The gov, Jive (bands played on jjj), Grace Emily (hipster crowd), Cranker (metal). I don't think they always charge unless a big name is playing. Jive is pretty cool for new upcoming bands. Where as the gov mainly has the made-its (boy/bear), Sarah Blasko, Washington et al.

Not getting radio reception at work has killed finding new bands for me. In addition, no one comes to Adelaide. I few bands I wanted to see went to Canberra, but not here!
Has anyone checked out the new Unearthed radio station? I have been meaning to do so, but have not got around to it.

The only good venues still around in Sydney is probably the Landsdowne hotel - free entry, bands paid flat rate. cos its free if you get a decent slot there is always a good crowd. Notes at newtown does the odd rock/alt act too but its more of an acoustic/jazz lounge. theres 2 vanguard hotels, one of which is supposed to be good and the other is another jazz lounge.

We used to have cool poo poo like the marquee but now that is a billy hydes

Sydneys problem is that with venues like the Excelsior and Hopetoun Closing up there is fewer places for small bands to get gigs. Justin Hemmes tried to 'smooth it over' with the live music crowd when he bought the Excelsior by opening the Beresford Hotel for live music with new PA and poo poo. The problem is that the Excelsior was about 150-200 people whereas the Beresford is 600 or more, so Small bands will never get their foot in the door because they wont ever fill out the venue.

Some of the most fun gigs Ive played and the best bands Ive seen was packed into that tiny little room at the back of the Excelsior.

Now, the only places that new/smaller acts can get any time at is lovely slots at the Annandale in multi-band bills (like the afformentioned Screaming Sundays or Blood/sweat/beers) or the even worse Valve bar shows which is always a revolving door of a crowd as each bands friends and family arrive to watch the bands play.

Bigger clubs like the metro, Gaelic, Factory all kind of need your band to have a big following to even get considered. Our band got lucky in that we made a lot of contacts with Harbor Agency acts that put us in a good light with them and as such got some nice gigs (Played with Doc Neeson, The Trews, Sarah McLeod) at decent venues which lead to some good exposure for us.

I dunno, I tend to rate venues from the player side rather than the punter because my only experience for the last 4 years has been from the stage - doing gigs sucked all the fun out of going to see other bands.

Not in said-band any more, and I dont feel like promoting a band that Im no longer a part of (but paid a significant amount of money to get to where it is)

Im currently working on stuff with my brother (also from the same band) on stuff we enjoy playing more than what we were playing in the previous band. Its fun to see what creativity you come up with you dont have a tyrant ruling every note you play.

it was mostly hard rock (that was actually pretty soft, really). working on harder rock now (actual hard rock)

EDIT: to clarify, neither of the bands you mentioned. Just know one member of RJ.

I dont get festivals. its like a concert, only there is more people there that arent there to see the band you like, and everything is expensive.

i only went to soundwave this year because it was as if 15 year old me wrote the lineup and it was financially smarter to go to that than all the sideshows. that and i missed tickets to the steel panther gig at the enmore (who the gently caress thought THAT would sell out?)

I didn't think I would before my first but I actually enjoy listening to bands I've never listened to before at festivals. Plus one of my favourite things ever was seeing Rammstein open for Tool. Whenever I got to concerts I usually leave wishing it had gone for longer and festivals satisfy that for me

Yeah but a festival set is typically a lot shorter than a sideshow, and theres wankers there who are just getting ready to watch the next band yelling out "OMG JUST FINISH" and its outdoors and usually sunny which ruins a lot of the atmosphere.

I enjoyed soundwave (and i did too when i went to it when faith no more played) but i saw tool at the BDO and it was loving dreadful. Tool were good, but as a whole, the event sucked rear end.

for me to justify festivals theres has to be at least 5 bands I absolutely WANT to see playing.

Id probably be more at home at download or Wacken I guess.

This is the big problem with festivals in Australia at the moment, people don't go to the see bands, they just go because it's the thing to do. Which I don't get, if you just wanna go get pissed, why would you do it at a music festival when you've gotta line up for an hour to pay $10 for a mid-strength beer?

music festivals are the only way shire people get out to other parts of sydney. I say that as someone who grew up there.

I dont take issue with BDO and all the other fests - i just dont go. at least it means all the good rock/metal acts I want to see get crammed into soundwave, which i am happy to go to if the lineup contains enough of stuff I want to see.

I dislike festivals as a rule though, primarily because of the previous comment. if it was people there that genuinely wanted to see those bands it would be a much better overall experience.

There's a news story here that doesn't mention Blackie's musical work: http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/girl-14-a...l#ixzz1vNy9mLDs and a benefit concert on Wednesday night at the Sandringham in Newtown, Sydney.

You can also donate directly at paypal to ahn666ATyahoo.com (the account of his bandmate, Ray Ahn). I don't know The Hard-Ons beyond seeing them a few times, but I feel like I should get the word out. They're great guys, a great band, and an important part of Australia's music scene.

I read this on facebook and checked out the hard ons on youtube. I thought that the only way it was possible to make music that bad was after brain trauma.

Plus the Thai is decent. I do miss Cult Cinema, though it's just moved to the Mu Meson Archives.

I live across the street, so I'm a bit biased. I blame the decline of live music on dance music and hipsters who prefer places like GoodGod.

thai is great, BSB is great. lovely bills that pull no heads are poo poo.

dance music is stupid and i dont know how anyone goes anywhere to listen to it. I like some of it, but I can only listen to it in my car. going to a club and having that unimaginative bland loving background noise is just grating as poo poo and I cant stand it.

see, a band is DOING something, so i dont care that I cant talk over the top of them. some douchbag wearing too much Industrie and making non offensive beeps and boops doesnt deserve anything over 20db.

Man, I know where to go to see good music, I remember when 505 was just an apartment in Hibernian House. The problem is that the live music scene is flooded with simple, moronic music, and it encourages people to have poor taste. Last night I saw a band who sang the lyrics "How do you sleep at night, with a monkey on your back and the chip on your shoulder". What I wanted to ask them was "How do you sleep at night when you cram three tired, feeble clichés into one line of your lacklustre chorus in your lovely song?". Then they started screaming something about setting fire to a UFO or something and I just couldn't stop laughing at them. As somebody who is maturing beyond the youthful insolence and short-sightedness of punk and rock, I feel like I am not being catered to nearly enough. Not nearly enough at all. No wonder I know people in their mid-twenties who still like adolescent musical styles, they never get exposed to anything decent.

I like a few TISM songs and I enjoy their witty lyrics and album/song names, however I cant really get my head around why they are/were popular. I get the sense its more because of notoriety from the song titles/lyrics and their stage shows, rather than being musically good?

I was first introduced to them when my Dad, named Greg, ran through a stop sign, and then that song came on the radio immediately after, and he didnt stop talking about it for about a week. He tracked down and bought the single.

I would gladly pay $180 to see Metallica again, but not in the shitfest that is going to Soundwave 2013. poo poo I spent easily double that the last time they were here.

I had a blast at the last one, but $180 is too much to see my favorite band from too far way unless I want to get heatstroke by arriving in the D at 11am. besides APC theres nothing else to justify putting up with expensive beer and emo dickheads everywhere.

Big day out and soundwave compete for two different markets, essentially. BDO has been mostly loving awful though so its rightfully dying.

unrelated but judging by my facebook feed, The Annandale is closing?
