Another interesting thing about the fly powerups - if you leave one buzzing around your head, and you get hit, the fly takes the hit for you instead of you losing health. This happens no matter what fly it is.

At least I think that's how it works.

Absolutely correct, which means unless you are already at full health, there's no point in not eating the green flies right away!

It also devalues the purple flies since an extra life is essentially 4 extra health...

Fun fact! That 'elevator where the pictures grow' is actually a reference to Disney World's terror mansion ride, it's how the whole ride starts off (your group gets shifted into an elevator disguised as a drawing room which slowly descends revealing more and more of the room's 3 pictures)

I thought that's probably what it was. Really liked that. This game is just full of crazy references. I think I heard a couple from The Shining as well in this level?

I could never play this level when I was younger. It was those ghosts, they freaked me out. Now they just look very silly.

And referring to "Tail Time" is just something Gex does a lot, as far as I remember. It's his favourite thing to say I guess.

Something I really liked in this game was the noise it makes when you pause/unpause. Especially when you hammer the button repeatedly. Silly, but one of the things I remember a lot from the game. I think it's in the next one too? Actually, the next game is the one I remember more of I think.

Oy, I thought all the Austin Powers references didn't start until Deep Cover Gecko, given the "secret agent" theme of the third game. But nope, they're right there in the second game as well.

Mike Meyers basically ruined all pop-culture reference-based humor for a 5 year stretch back in the late 90's.

Man old 3d platformers are surreal as hell. Bizarre level geometry, often impossible in real life, full of familiar but oversized and distorted objects and wrong colors. And everything moves in such a strange fashion.

Not complaining. In fact I wouldn't mind a self aware comeback. Realism is boring.

Um it's called the Haunted Mansion and it originated at Disneyland. But yes that is the reference.

We continue to explore the game, and see what the series has to offer as it becomes obvious that the designers are starting to refine what they attempted in the original title. Hint: I'm starting to like this game. It has charm.

And it has pimp struttin'.

I'm not actually dead! I moved from one household to another for a month, and I got caught up in a whole bunch of E/N-worthy drama that doesn't actually involve me, and Vrikkian texted me and I forgot anyway because I'm a jerk.

I know you get the Reward remote in the first run through this level, but is the general intention with the collectibles just "grab 'em as is my want" until it's necessary? I would think getting the Reward remote within a new area's first video would be more productive.

I'll most likely be trying to get them the first run through each time, path permitting of course. I'm going to take a little more time running through each objective to path them out in the future.

I've always wanted these games to be LPed, I'm so happy someone is finally playing slogging through them. I bought the PC version of the first game after playing it at a neighbors house way back when, and remember honestly enjoying it and thinking it was pretty good. Although, considering I always got too frustrated to actually beat it, that might have been nostalgia. I just started replaying Gex64 because of this thread and its still fun, but GODDAMN is the camera bad. Its easily one of the worst I've ever seen, it makes the game almost unplayable at points.

That being said, I wish you both the best of luck and I'll be eagerly awaiting the next update!

EDIT EDIT: It seems that Vrikkian's audio cuts out right at the end. It played back alright in Camtasia, so I'm assuming it may have been Youtube mangling it. I'll see what I can't do about fixing it soon.

Just a heads up, Vrikkian's mic gets really quiet from about the 8-minute mark onwards.

I seem to remember this game, even though I could have sworn I've only played the third. Are there many re-used level themes in the third one, or did I just forget playing this?

So, does Gex actually have any lines that reference Indiana Jones, or does he just reference it in his looks and the theme of the level there?

I swear I'm hearing faint breathing, at least early on in the latest update. It's a bit eerie.

And the blood coolers are just for the monsters to use as prop blood.
As for the 'Vrikkian's one save' on the card story:
"Interesting story about that , I actually started playing it on the PS3" Anything he says after that is basically unhearable. Except for small snippits.

I have no idea what happened at the end of the video, but once you entered the bonus level, Vrik becomes like he is in the other room trying to talk to you. :/ Kinda sucks cause I'm really curious as to what his Grandia story was. All I head was something about replaying it. I could be wrong though as it was hard to hear him.

I was sucked into another dimension, and reappeared outside my house. Korremar didn't want to stop the recording, so I tried yelling from the window to keep it going.

Actually, I have no idea what happened. I just previewed Part 4, and I can hear myself through the entire clip so it's not like my microphone is dead since it was recorded mere minutes after Part 3. Maybe Virtual Audio Cables decided that my line was no longer valid.

As a summary for my Grandia save on ePSXe: I was playing it as the PS1 Classic on the PS3, and I lost my save about 20 hours in. I didn't want to replay it all, so I downloaded the game image and the closest save I could find on Google... and have yet to play it since. However, on the downloaded save I'm only about 15 minutes behind where I was before my PS3's HDD decided to hate me, so eventually I want to beat it since it's a pretty groovy early PS1 RPG.

Huh, what rating did this game get? E? Surprised they managed to get away with adding blood here by not too being explicit about it.

And interesting prospect of using Indiana Jones as a bonus level, though the design is more reminiscient of "Legends of Hidden Temple". Still, nothing like collecting floating emeralds.

Also, is it just me or was there a painting of Rez's ancestor in that Screamer level? Good to see him being a bit more omnipresent than he was in the previous game.

So how can you tell climbable walls from non-climbable walls? Or is it just the trail of collectibles leading up them?

Oh, to dance naked on the beach while praying to stones!

I think the climbable walls have pickups on them, and in later levels or at least in Gex 3, they will "look" climbable, in that they'll be covered in goo or vines or have a distinct texture.

That's Gex 3. No climbable wall in the video so far had footprints.

It's mostly that for every level, climbable walls will have a unique texture. They introduce them usually with pickups, after that you can look out for them yourself. Or remember from a previous level in the same archetype, it's consistent. Sometimes they're blatantly obvious, too. It's a pretty neat and subtle design choice.

I loved playing the N64 version of this game as a kid. The camera was horrible as Hell, but it was still fun to my 7 year old heart.

Huh, good to see they kept the camera flash SFX and the checkpoint system as a callback to the first game, though why checkerboard TVs would make camera noises in a media dimension might confuse new players to the Gex franchise.

Ugh I just finished my E+M course, please don't remind me how much I hate capacitors and all they stand for

I tried to watch the first couple of videos from the first game but I really couldn't get through them, Gex 1 is just too awful. I was an N64 child and never got to play it, and the fact that the series went from Gex 64 to Gex 3 meant I constantly was looking for the fabled "Gex 2". No, I never did look in the PS1 section

I absolutely loved Gex 2 and 3 however, and it's a lot of fun to watch these videos now because the game really does stand up, I'm even laughing at a lot of the one liners though that may be because they're all from my childhood.

Also, SHUT DOWN ALL THE GARBAGE SMASHERS ON THE DETENTION LEVEL was the only line in circuit central on the N64. The. Only. Line.

Loved this game as a kid, and your thread is reminding me about so much. Particularly, it's reminded me how much I hated that last level, and all the other Circuitry type levels. At the time, I guess I just thought they were like, super hard bonus level things, but it really is the camera's fault. Also, it's weird how many of these references I get now, fourteen years later or whatever.

This series needs a reboot, and I am in favor of the FMV guy in a costume, as long as it's an adventure game with a film noir detective style.
