Also, the box on the back that says 'do not write here' is a typo, so make sure to sign it.

A real answer is that cheques persisted a lot longer in America because their banking system is a comparatively uncontrolled clusterfuck as well as having a much larger number of banks than most countries due to its size. Whereas in all the other countries the fewer banks all sat down/were encouraged to sit down by the government and come up with reliable free universal electronic transfer and payment systems much, much earlier. Thus cheques went the way of the donkey and some countries in Europe have now gotten rid of them as an option entirely.

If it's any consolation, no one in the US thinks much of them either, and anywhere I have to pay with them (Costco) feels like stepping back in time 20 years.

Anyway how bout them kickstarted games?

Yeah, I use checks for paying odd-job repairmen. Also once a year there's a homeowner's association fee. That's about it.

And yeah I still write cheques for rent or paying for my kid's daycare or whatever. I'm just surprised when there are stores that accept them.

It's also that we standardized and greatly sped up check handling during the 60s-80s with incremental improvements since then. So checks will clear within a few days tops here while I'm to understand that in other countries they can easily take a week or more. Hell, many stores in the US that take checks have scanning machines now that can read the information off the check and effectively process it as an instantaneous debit transaction (still, it's very rare to see even old people use checks at the register these days). Like despite the number of banks, standardization of checks and processing them has been locked down by a few interlocking automated clearing houses, one of which is straight up government run. So, out of nothing other than vicarious curiousity and having a very minor run-in with the developer when I stated that I thought it was overly ambitious, I'm interested in the progress of Skyjacker This was the initial kickstarter that failed; https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/digitilus/al-skyjacker They followed this up with the starship Constructor project that got funded; https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/digitilus/skyjacker-starship-constructor Then tried to start up the original kickstarter again, which again failed; https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/digitilus/skyjacker-space-combat-sim They managed to hit greenlight; http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=184306161 But it's all gone quiet since the end of 2013, with the release deadline being third quarter 2014. Anyone know how it's progressing?

Mostly because I don't understand the fuss. There are plenty of instances of people trying to scam creators of music into working for free. This is known. There are, thankfully, also a lot of the scamees that make a fuss about it. This is good. People should not be bullied into working for free to get publicity. But how, besides the usual argument of "the internet peoples being stupid", does that impact a fan competition? I struggle to see how this is not just the developer doing a cool thing for the fans (ala Blizzard putting a novelty NPC in WoW). Would it be different if they asked for fan *art* (of which the net abound) rather than fan music? GhostBoy fucked around with this message at 21:17 on Aug 28, 2014 |

Not to mention even if you have a bank account being able to use a card requires a certain amount of credit. I don't, so mine has a $500 daily limit on transactions and I either have to use a check or walk into a bank to do a transfer/get a money order/walk out with an envelope of cash for anything that costs more than $500.

I loved Lunar Flight it was beautiful atmospheric and also one of the first games to really do VR well. Now the developer has recruited some staff and launched a kickstarter for ZVR Apocalypse - which is a VR zombie shooter, I can only hope it's halfway as immersive as Lunar Flight was. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/746952885/zvr-apocalypse

GhostBoy posted:I'm interested in probing the SA hivemind on this one. Mostly because I don't understand the fuss. I don't think Red Thread floated the idea with nefarious intentions, but rather a misunderstanding of the relationship between companies and creators that's been evolving for a while. I just kind of winced when I heard about it, because I knew nothing good would come of it. Short and simple: They were asking creators to work for free. It was a competition to work for free, even. The T&C, as repeated in this thread, indicates that Red Thread would have had rights to use the material, in perpetuity, for free. That's why people's hackles got up over it. Prior to a few years ago, it would have flown by without a blink because people still bought into being paid in 'exposure', and the idea that companies were their chums. Now, not so much. If they'd offered a token sum, or a free upgrade to a high-tier pledge to the winner, that probably would have gone over a whole lot better. You can bet your bippy that if Blizz started using fan art for advertising, the CCGs or whatever, people would get pissed fast-- both the pros that they'd be doing an end-run around, and the people whose work they were poaching. They could probably still get away with a clause in their featured fan-art submission process claiming free use etc, because of the sheer size of the fanbase, but it would raise the same kind of stink among the savvier ones when it came to light.
