This looks alright but I resent the fact that you used the D&D stats instead of creating a set of stats tailor-made for what you want to achieve. DW used them because, y'know, it tried to model D&D and, frankly, it was a little wonky.

Yeah, this is my biggest complaint. Especially since you're still using "16" "15" "12" "09" and whatever instead of just lopping those off and sticking with the number that matters of +2, +0, -1, etc. DW kept that stuff (unfortunately IMO) because it was trying to emulate the feel of D&D. As far as I can tell, you are not.

So I've been idly keeping one eye on The Black Watchmen kickstarter just because I think it's a glorious trainwreck and I can't help but watch it unfold.

Basically the story behind it is that a marketing company ran a couple ARG campaigns for The Secret World MMO. They thought that the secret organizations and characters they created were so drat interesting that they bought the IP for them away from Secret World's publisher, and decided to make a permanent ongoing ARG. Sort of like Majestic tried to do back in 2001.

Now, that doesn't sound so bad in and of itself, and I love playing ARGs so I got hyped at the thought of it, but the people running this thing seem to be way better doing marketing for other people than developing a game themselves.

For starters: This is actually their second attempt at crowdfunding. Their first attempt tried raising money over at MMORPG.com because they wanted to appeal to a niche audience who "gets it" rather than a broader one. They also hoped marketing it to the audience of The Secret World (an MMO that only hit one quarter of its sales targets and nearly bankrupted its publisher) would bring in the big bucks. Towards the end when it was getting pretty clear that they weren't going to hit their target the guy running it posted his cell number and personal email to the backer forum asking that if anyone had any media contacts to pass them along. Needless to say, they didn't come close to hitting their target in the end.

So now they're trying Kickstarter. Now it's not only an ARG but it's a comic book too! One of the major problems they have starting out is that they're French Canadian, and they apparently have nobody on staff who is a native English writer/speaker, so many of their official materials and marketing are riddled with typos and grammatical errors. They also cut off their $5 tip jar tier almost immediately after the Kickstarter started because.. reasons I guess?

The head guy behind it also did an AMA from his bedroom. ("On Reddit?" you ask. No, on Twitch. "Aren't AMAs a Reddit thing though?" Generally yeah but apparently he thought it was a better idea to do it with mouthbreathers over Skype from his bedroom and broadcast it for the world to see.)

Oh also they decided that one of the main characters in the ARG is a lady called the Cybermage who supposedly is like hyper-intelligent and all-powerful. She looks like this.

A lot of people thought that was kinda sexist but the guy running it said the design was done by a lady so really it's cool OK?

I could go on, but like I said it's been this fantastic trainwreck. I kinda hope someone does succeed in doing a Majestic-style ongoing ARG someday. But I'm pretty sure this team isn't going to be the one to do it.

Can't you just use your normal bank card to do that stuff? I mean there's a PIN and everything. This is seriously odd I'm 30 years old and as a European I have never seen a check, nor heard anyone talk about one, nor have one mentioned in any kind of news report in my entire life. I'm given to assume that they literally stopped existing before I was born around here.

Did you never have to buy equipment rated in the tens of thousands of pounds? Usually difficult to get a card with that limit, and you don't want to be carrying that amount of cash. I'm forty, and I was doing that fifteen years ago in the UK. Companies use a _lot_ of cheques.

Also bear in mind that America has a different liability profile than the UK. You can literally use your CC No and wave past the CVC here, but in the UK they shifted the liability to the merchant and offered bounties for invalid cards...Mid nineties it was fifty pounds or so.

I produced a website years ago that ran the same kind of gig for film music, but what sank it wasn't the 'We own your poo poo after submitted', but the absolute poo poo fight with the RIAA and the MPRS, the latter who prosecute first, then check to see if the music is actually from someone they represent. Licensing is a terrible, legal battle, even when you're trying to do the right thing. The RIAA believes that is essentially rules the license space and has been litigious about it.

Nintendo Kid posted:

What do you mean by a bank card that isn't a debit card? The special ones that literally only work at the bank's own ATMs and nowhere else?

He means a debit card, I believe. The UK unified ATM a long time ago under Maestro/Link, which then ended up as as an extension of Visa, but that's mostly guesswork as poo poo has changed in the last decade. The UK has a much smaller regulatory framework.

Edit: The Secret World has a fairly bad backstory that is buried deep under sub-par gameplay. Save your money and buy any of the Laundry books by Stross.

Gryphon Knight Epic's last day is coming up, and contributions seem to have really dropped off since it met its initial goal. Their first stretch goal is $5k away, but it's for adding all of a stage, 2 bosses and a new weapon. I think splitting that up into smaller stretch goals might make more sense.

Do you guys think people are more likely to contribute to a project if a goal is close? Or do projects usually reach a plateau were everyone who would be interested has seen it and you can't really expect much more?

Twenty-five dollars and a six pack to my name
So I backed Infinite Space 3: Sea of Stars because I loved Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space. Kickstarter was successful, the game appeared on Steam's Early Access and then the dev put the game in a $1,5 bundle a month in after the game was released in EA. People were pissed, he apologized to the backers who paid $10 year before, he admitted it was a mistake but they didn't have enough money to finish the game. But now the game's in a bundle for the second time. This is getting ridiculous. I'm beginning to think both Early Access and Kickstarter hosed indie gaming up in some ways. I feel like such a dumbass paying for betatesting games that'll never shape up into what they were meant to be. Real artists ship, goddammit.

And now Planetary Annihilation is coming out in two weeks and it's still not known whether the game will be always-online or not.

Pay what you want bundles (that include brand new games in particular) are responsible for hugely devaluing games, in particular indie games. Why buy a game for 5 bucks, when you can wait for a bundle and get it for 25 cents or less? I used to buy every bundle for as little as possible just to collect things. I stopped once I had more skin in the game and realized how incredibly unhealthy that is for the industry.

So, another MMO appears!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1045484633/project-gorgon-a-new-approach-to-mmos

This one is made by people that actually worked on shipped MMOs though:

quote:

I'm Eric Heimburg, the lead developer, and I started working on MMOs way back in 2001, including Asheron's Call 1 & 2 and Perpetual's Star Trek Online. I've also worked as a network engineer and as an indie game developer and pro-indie proponent. I have production experience, design experience, and coding experience. Unfortunately I am the worst artist in the world, and I know nothing about sound.

I followed this project way back when they tried a kickstarter but didn't have much success. The game seems quite charming with some fresh ideas and not "we're totally making a better WoW!" thing. It's also already playable so that's a giant plus. I also like this:

quote:

(Soapbox mode. For the record, I really encourage you to never back any indie MMO project unless you can see actual gameplay firsthand. It's just too risky! Making an indie MMO is beyond hard... I've been a game developer for well over a decade, and a programmer for a lot longer, and this indie MMO is the hardest project I've ever worked on. And it took me years just to get this far. So it breaks my heart to see a bunch of excited gamers spending money on games that will supposedly be made from scratch in 12 months, by a team who's never even made games before. That's a recipe for vaporware, and players will become jaded and distrustful of crowd funding. Don't let this happen. Please insist on seeing some solid progress before you invest! Soapbox off.)

It seems they haven't got much attention and although I probably won't play it I'd like to see what comes out of this project.
