If it becomes too much they'll probably do the Fallout 2 approach and make a bar in the middle of nowhere stuffed with easter egg characters.

There's nothing logical about paying money for a video game that doesn't exist yet. Especially paying more than the game is worth! Why did I give Tim Schafer a hundred bucks?? Because he is the most exciting beardy dude ever.

Why didn't I give Tim Schafer 100 bucks? Because the rich bastard can fund his own games and doesn't need to beg.

Business models that succeed despite piracy (or even thanks to it) are also nothing new, if that anecdote about selling more strategy guides than games is true.

Business models involving new technology and not something invented in the 70's tend to do the trick.

Is this really surprising? I mean just think how big the anime-loving nerd demographic is.

And Neal's got a good point when he says that we have tons of big-budget shooters with at least moderately realistic gun action, whereas basically all games with swordfighting come down to "press A, swing sword in ridiculous over-the-top animation in a general direction".

Games with guns are really 1:1 representations, just saying.

I'm at an interesting point where I'm willing to pay a little extra (couple of dollars) for digital rather than physical product so I don't have to dispose of the box + content.

It looks like they overestimated the cost to actually develop the game, so they are creating a Kickstarter for a port, when they really need the money to just finish the development of the original project. It looks like a lot of the core features still haven't been finished. I mean hell, they can't even release a Linux demo yet.

If you write the code in C or LUA or something couldn't you just compile a Linux program as well as a windows one?

According to the developers themselves they've been making the game since 2004. Then they went bankrupt and if the comments are to be believed only produced some screen shots of mock ups. They even went through an engine change and we all know how well that usually turns out.
