I made it through Arcanum just fine as a crazy mechanical technologist- with speed rings and a focus on speed while using the mechanized rifle, you can blow away entire crowds of people in a single turn. I also saved up money and built an army of mechanical spiders which later became an incredible army of 8 super-rape automatons. I didn't actually get a chance to do much to the final boss because they all crowded around and annihilated him. I still never managed to beat the undead pirates that are supposed to be the hardest (optional) fight in the game.
