Meager Man hangs up the phone and stares straight ahead. There was something in his daughter's voice when he told her he couldn't make it today. Something that he hadn't heard in her voice for a long time; not since the visitations started after the divorce settlement. But it's been so long now that he can't quite put his finger on what it was.
