Blood & Chrome Episodes
Part 1:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pT79x4qM4FE
Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdisGiivP9c

UPDATE 11/5/12 !!!

It's being released! Hooray!

Older stuff:

Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome is (was) supposed to be the prequel series to Syfy's BSG about this guy here:

Here's the plot stolen from Wikipedia:

quote:

Set in the tenth year of the First Cylon War, the story follows William Adama as a young man, with the call sign "Husker". William, being a recent Academy graduate, is assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet; the Galactica.[5] He is ordered to escort a young woman, who eventually turns out to have vital information that carries significant importance to certain Cylon secrets.[6] He is accompanied by Coker. The routine mission eventually turns dangerous and becomes a pivotal part in their story.[7][8]

A trailer was premiered at Wondercon recently, but the trailer is being pulled from youtube for copyright reasons but you can still watch it right herefor now.

Goons rejoiced, last thread closed, but wait, there's some not so good news:

From Deadline

quote:

It’s a case of bad news/good news for Battlestar Galactica fans who have been flocking to the Web to watch an unauthorized trailer for the long-in-the-works offshoot Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome over the past 36 hours. After lengthy deliberations, Syfy has decided not to go forward with the project, about the young years of William Adama, as a regular TV series. Blood & Chrome, initially envisioned as a Web series, was greenlighted as a two-hour TV pilot in October 2010. Because of intensive post-production, including special effects, the pilot was not delivered to Syfy until last November. As of January, Syfy president original programming Mark Stern was quoted as saying that he the network brass were “trying to figure out the economics right now” and that he hoped those would be figured out. Now, the network has passed on the project as a regular series but is looking to do it as a digital one, while airing the already produced pilot on the network as a movie. “Though the vision for “Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome” has evolved over the course of the past year, our enthusiasm for this ambitious project has not waned,” Stern said in a statement today. “We are actively pursuing it as was originally intended: a groundbreaking digital series that will launch to audiences beyond the scope of a television screen. The 90-minute pilot movie will air on Syfy in its entirety at a future date.”

Despite the lengthy production and decision-making, the buzz about Blood & Chrome never died among Battlestar fans. It went into overdrive over the past couple of days following a WonderCom panel over the weekend with Kevin Grazier, the scientific adviser for Syfy’s Battlestar Galactica series, where he screened what was described as a trailer for Blood & Chrome. That trailer, to Trent Reznor and Karen O’s cover of “Immigrant Song” for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, found its way to the Web on Monday night and has gone viral — garnering some 100,000 views in 24 hours. The problem was that this was not an official trailer but a demo reel not intended for public consumption and thus not put through the process of clearing music and other rights. It is still unclear how the video made its way to WonderCon, but NBCUniversal today moved swiftly to take down the multiple copies that had popped up on YouTube. Universal Cable Prods, which produces Blood & Chrome, may still shop the project to other networks. Michael Taylor wrote the teleplay from a story by Battlestar Galactica executive producer David Eick, Taylor and Bradley Thompson & David Weddle.

It was going to use CG virtual sets, and in the trailer they looked pretty good. But looks like it was too expensive for Syfy as the last one got, and farscape, and, others. I'd like a new space series to watch on TV until they get around to making another Star Trek, but who knows? Maybe if the ratings are really (REALLY) good theyll reconsider a TV show.

Although I wasn't that terribly impressed with the trailer, if it's already finished, then you drat well bet I really want to see it. I'm keeping my expectations low though, if it ever does come out in some form. I really liked Battlestar Galactica, although at the sametime, I kinda feel it's time to give it a rest now. Yeah, it really seems like the only reason for it was Siffy trying to recreate the BSG phenomenon and Caprica wasn't it. I doubt this would be either, so it's probably a good thing it's not becoming a full series, only to be canceled after the execs realize it's not BSG-2. It's so tantalizing to think about exploring that universe but it's abundantly clear the NBC/Syfy people have zero drive to do so.

Good, it sounded loving terrible.

Leave BSG alone. It doesn't need a sequel or a prequel. The "universe" doesn't need to be "explored." Everything that needed to be said was said in the original series. I don't care if this is ever released.

Man you spin around on the roof of a building couple of times and people going to think that some other news company is trying to ape Daily Planet

Eh, I was looking forward to B.C. but the above quote and that trailer kind of made me ambivalent on that issue. A purely action-based telling of the first war isn't enough. Military and political intrigue is also needed in addition to philosophical contemplating on the machine/man issue and morality - Cylons were actually good guys in THIS war, after all whereas in BSG they were a step above the SS when it came to pure evil.

Besides, it's all kind of futile anyway. Like a WWII story when 50 years later Earth dissappears in a ball of fire and the story of the only survivors ends in even a lamer and more frustrating way.

So I'm actually fine with no more BSG.

And gently caress SyFy forever. Dumbest channel ever.

Evil baby bunnies cannot be fed solid food until after the first week.

Didn't SyFy basically announce that they're not a science fiction channel after their name change, stating that they're now a "poo poo channel about bad CGI monsters plus other crap?"

Without BattleStar they should probably go bankrupt at this point, since I don't know of any person, forum or entity that regards their movies as anything other than grabage. They literally add a monster movie a week, and after "Shark + Octopus" then "Shark with two heads" I just don't see any animal combination not tried yet. Though that soun s like a photoshop thread waiting to happen.

I don't think I'll ever forgive SyFy for some of the horrifically awful things they've done to some of my favorite science-fiction novels from my youth. They produced miniseries for both Wizard of Earthsea and Riverworld that were some of the most dreadfully embarrassingly awful television that I've ever seen. It makes me feel sad and depressed just to think about it.

And I'm with the people that don't really care if the pilot ever gets released or not. It never sounded very good to me anyway, it was like they saw the failure of Caprica and said, "Hey! Let's take the franchise and just make an entirely superficial action-focused story out of it full of spaceship battles and Michael Bay-like special effects sequences and editing! The "cerebral character-drama" approach didn't work so we'll just go in the exact opposite direction. That'll attract a lot of viewers!" That's partially why I'm confused that they're canning it. I guess, like most everything SyFy has done (other than BSG) it was just executed so poorly that it wouldn't have even succeeded in the way they were intending.

I just don't agree with this line of thinking. The idea that "all that needs to be said was said," and therefore a story should be put in a glass jar and never touched again makes me roll my eyes.

Would we really have wanted Terminator 2, Aliens, Predator 2, Wrath of Khan or any of a dozen other classic films to have never been made because the original "said all that needed to be said"? Some franchises like Batman and Star Trek and Dr. Who (and even more "ancient" options like Sherlock Holmes) have run for 50 years or more on the idea that there is ALWAYS something else to say (though admittedly, this does tend to cause quality to fluctuate, it never stops people from trying)

Maybe people think its different for prequels because of the whole "we know how its going to end" factor, but I don't think so. Realistically, we "know" how 90% of fiction is going to end, or at least can reasonably guess from a few fundamental options (they find earth, or they don't find earth, to use a topical example). I can't even count the number of times I've seen people condemn "lovely endings" just because they "saw it coming a mile away" regardless of how well it fits or was executed in the story. Predictability isn't always a sin.

Its not fair to condemn a story before its made just on the basic idea that IT MUST SUCK BECAUSE ITS A PRE/SEQUEL, AND WILL RUIN THE ORIGINAL BY ASSOCIATION. That's the kind of thinking that leads people to obsess over the "originality, gripping realism and unpredictability" of lovely reality television.

Sanguinia posted:

Oh, no, by all means they can go ahead and release it, I will just ignore it. The whole Galactica universe exists to serve the story that was told in the main series and I don't see any potential in digging into it any farther. I'm open to the possibility that something good might come along, but none of the ideas I've heard so far, including B&C, sound promising. I think it's best to move on to the next thing instead of obsessing over one already completed series. It's like some kind of weird separation anxiety over a TV show.

It was a loving miracle BSG was allowed to tell a complete story, especially considering the poo poo network it was on. Caprica showed that. I disagree that BSG's backstory isn't worth mining, it's just that anything you come up with won't be allowed completion so we're better off letting it go.

Caprica didn't work and that was pretty much the only chance/avenue for a series based on the BSG universe. They just didn't have strong enough characters to hold the series up, though there were some nice ideas.

I'm going off on a bit of a tangent here, but I recently got the Alien (singular) blu-ray having not seen the film for at least a decade and watched it with a friend who hasn't seen any of the Alien films. Considering I wasn't born when it was released and it's now 33 years old it puts some modern CGI-fests to shame, especially as it's paced so well. Sure there are parts which look a little ropey but 33 years ago it must have been mindblowing and the effects beat the poo poo out of some other films from the same era like the first Terminator. Much of the model shots hold up really well too, particularly the landing, investigation and takeoff on the planet. For what it's worth my friend took some convincing that it was really 33 years old.

Where am I going with this? Well Alien was an excellent film, but if you look at review sites you'll often see Aliens rated higher and it departs from Alien quite significantly by being much more action-focussed. My point is that, although it's rare, sometimes you can improve on an original and stories don't have to be put in a glass case and never brought out again.

Having said that I completely understand the scepticism where SyFy involvement is concerned, and later Alien films rather undermine my point by making a complete hash of it. Meh. Either way, my next blu-ray purchase will be Aliens.

Blending in like it ain't no thang

I'm glad people brought up the Terminator, Alien, and Predator movies because they are the perfect example of how sometimes too much can be explained. We need to see on-screen versions of the Cylon War/Kobol as much as we needed to see on-screen versions of the robot wars/Space Jockeys*/Alien vs. Predator. I can't remember who originally said it, but a favorite quote of mine is, "Nothing Lucas or any other director could have shown us would ever equal the wonderful things we saw in our imaginations the moment Princess Leia said 'Clone Wars'."

Alls I have to do is mention Alien 3.... What an AWFUL movie. Some people like it, to each their own but I personally HATED it. There can always be good and bad to a sequel/prequel.

Caprica was decent in its own way, they just had too much belly aching and crying with the robot girl being obnoxious. I wanted to see more killing by the gay mobster uncle of zit face future admiral. That guy was seriously a badass waiting to be un-caged.

Also to those worrying about not having licensed the cover by Trent Reznor and that other lady, Reznor probably wouldn't give a poo poo sandwich if he saw the trailer about others using his music. Hes a nerd and he probably nerdgasmed as much as most of us over it.

Its a shame Sci-fi cancelled it. I think one of the main reasons Caprica failed was because it wasn't originally meant to be set in the BSG universe and it showed. This one had potential though.

It sucks that the History Channel has more sci-fi content than the actual Sci-fi channel.
