Not sure about western audiences but any Indonesian, or even South-East Asian audiences would most likely have picked up on the things you said, Pigeon Shamus. The line, 'You don't shoot at cops, you paid them off' is pretty much how you deal with cops in everyday over here. Indonesia has one of the highest rate of government corruption in the world. Oh, about the movie's plot, I've watched The Raid again and you guys are right, the story is very basic and simple. Not sure how I missed it the first time, got too caught up in the action, I suppose. the first hallway fight scene, when Rama went to town with the baton and knife is hands down my favorite. The audience audible winced whenever Rama picked up a knife or machete from that point on.

Saw this last night with a friend and was just amazed at the fight choreography. Seriously, its probably the best I've ever seen. Two questions though: Why did the cops abandon their guns after the fridge explosion were they just out of ammo anyways? Also, why couldn't they use a cellphone to call for help, even if the mission was unauthorized? These two things bugged me, but ultimately the plot is a very minor detail in this movie, I came for amazing action/fighting scenes and I was not disappointed! Its pretty much impossible to overrate how amazing the fighting in this movie is, it lives up to every ounce of hype.

Pigeon Shamus posted:Saw this tonight and quite enjoyed it, though I'm kind of surprised at the acclaim it's getting as a superlative martial arts film - it's very very good in that respect, furious and brutal, but even from my cursory experience of martial arts films I feel I've seen more visceral work in Tony Jaa's The Protector and more artistic, satisfying work in Tsui Hark's Once Upon a Time in China films. Evans' direction is a little messy, too, but there's some really sensationally-staged setpieces, like the fight in the garish blue-and-green apartment, the cocaine factory brawl and the tag-team Mad Dog fight. I have never seen a martial arts film that had me squirming in my seat at the fighting. Which is amazing in this movie as 80% of the film is elbow on face madness. Two more points: Where the gifs at? Saw this the other night and I was physically exhausted from my whole body being tense basically the entire time. What a crazy movie. Not a huge martial arts movie fan, but drat did this deliver. Very high recommendation for this flick if you're looking for balls-to-the-wall action and nothing more.

Different strokes and all that.

Won't be seeing this till midnight on Friday so I can't say how well it works in the film, but I've enjoyed listening to it standalone. I wasn't even aware there was another version. I think the only people that would be able to say how the original score would be those that saw it at Toronto. It'd really odd that Sony would ask them to change the score like that, though Shinoda's score is pretty surprisingly awesome.

I really enjoyed it. A lot of it comes across as a much better version of this with elbows, machetes and gun play. The plots good enough to keep things rolling, there's plenty of no names for the bodycount, and a guy who thinks using killing with a gun is like fast food and lives for fist fights. The set pieces are great. Go and watch it.

I'm not sure if that scene got the biggest reaction outside of the boss-kill or if it was when the guy got thrown onto the ledge, on his spine. When the motion slows down you're thinking "Oh ok we're going to see him sail down to the bottom for a little whi--OOooh poo poo, back fuckin' breakage!" Which is funny because it's not any worse than the fate that awaited him at the very bottom but the surprise of it and actually seeing it make it much worse (better)." Also, did anyone else get a laugh out of the credits where it was like a full minute of "Machete thug 1/2/3/4/5/6, Meth lab worker 1/2/3/4/5/6" and so on? As seen here. Caught this yesterday in Chicago. I know I'm just echoing everyone else's sentiments, but my god was the movie incredible. Even with only ~15-20 people in my theater, there was still a round of applause when Mad Dog got taken down. One thing is that I really wished they had done more with guns and knives. Some of the most brutal fights came at the beginning: for example, when one of the criminals gets knocked to the ground and one of the police shoots a gun point blank into his head. Also, the first hallway fight scene where Rama is using a knife and baton was definitely my favorite gang-style fight scene.

Ok, just got back from seeing this. Just some thoughts - Never seen a martial arts movie like this before. Because there are amazing gunfights as well as crazy hand-to-hand combat. The gunfights in this movie can be compared to 90s HK action flicks (The Mission, Exiled, Hard Boiled), while the martial art portions, are nearly unmatched. - The tension in this movie is ridiculous, there's so much tension every scene and it just builds up and builds up, you just don't see stuff like that in a martial arts movie. In those Jackie Chan or Jet Li movies, they'd just start fighting almost immediately, no build-up, nothing, everyone comes at once. In The Raid, you have no clue what's coming next, what's creeping around the next corner. It's almost shot like a horror flick. The perfect example is when those 4 henchmen were searching for cops who are still alive, they almost find them, almost find them.....and the tension just grows. - Again, the gun fights are plain insane. Everyone talks about the martial art stuff, but I really wished they had more gun scenes. Especially the part where they have to escape the room was just NUTS. Some of the best action mixed with tension scenes I've seen. - And then the actual martial arts, is just brutal. While I don't think it's THE best Martial Arts choreography, it's definitely the most brutal and "realistic". A lot of the fights just looked almost real in a sense, it's hard to explain, every kick and every punch can be felt. For example, I still think Jackie Chan vs. Benny the Jet is the best fight scene hands down I've ever watched, nothing in The Raid is better than that, but as far as brutality, it definitely surpasses.

The most reasonable explanation is that the guns made too much noise. They needed stealth at that point or the horde would just keep closing in on them.

Just got back from the 7:15 in an utterly packed showing at the only theater within 25 miles showing The Raid, and I have to say it was totally amazing. Highlights for me were the crawlspace knife slice, the broken door frame flying slam, and the tabletop coke factory fight. Just a visceral experience from the get go. Don't expect a story. Expect people to get punched and shot and you will definitely enjoy it. I'm not one to yell out Also, not needlessly gory! I liked that. This touches on what the type of action you can expect to see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OPyoJgV_YY- with a lot more chopsocky.

etalian posted:Yes imagine the craziness of the continuous shot charge up the staircase beat-down scene from The Proctor turned into a whole movie. As awesome as that scene is, it has nothing on The Raid. I do have to say, if you haven't watched the trailer in the OP yet, don't. It doesn't spoil the whole movie or even the best parts but it does give just a bit too much away, to the point where you know a bit too much of what it coming ahead next in certain scenes. Watch the green band trailer or even the short clip of the hallway scene posted above(that gives a good idea of what you're in store for without spoiling much besides a short part of an insane scene). As for the movie itself, there is no stating just how brutal this movie is. It isn't overly gory(yes, there's gore, but you've seen much worse in other movies) but I can't think of any other movies off the top of my head that can match the sheer brutality and lack of punches being pulled in this. If you're any sort of action fan you owe it to yourself to see this movie if you can. Movie's like this don't come around often.

When I saw it at Sundance there was a director Q&A afterwards. 1. Went in not knowing much about it so it was kind of a surprise to see it was directed by a Welsh dude. 2. He mentioned when they were filming that stunt, something went wrong with the harness and the actor fell like 10 feet onto his back onto that bannister. Dude spent three weeks in the hospital then showed up the day after discharge to film the scene again. Definetly in my top three of the festival, after I'm Not a Hipster and Jesse and Celeste Forever.
