I apologize for the audio quality, I didn't really know what I was doing with the recording, so there is a lot of echo and I sound very loud.

For a text write up:

Dr. Snark as Robert Sterne: A former UN intelligence operative who made a few enemies while in employment. After being deployed in Federation territory, Robert learned something he should not have, and fleeting for his life, he only took the computer in his brain, the clothes on his back, and an advance computerized laser rifle.

Zenorefe as Sergeant Major Tauron Atlas: a gruff no nonsense United Nations Sergeant Major in the ground forces, after being caught in a vicious engagement with a UN foe, we was recruited for a black ops operation in an unknown location before making his way out into space, which brings us too...

nothingtoseehere as SIR Tarquin Black: A former intern in the UN diplomatic corp, after the tragic death of his parents in a hovercar accident, he doubled down on his career. His crowning achievement was helping organize a violent coup in a peaceful African country to bring it into the UN, using UN black ops assets. Currently on long term sabbatical cruising the stars on an obscenely large public pension.

ForeverBWFC as Paul Méndez, en engineer in the United Nations Space Navy, he here to "make sure the poo poo they're in works!". May or may not be a MIND double agent.

Samolety as Jake Dedman A thief from the UN, his luck ran out when a job in Shanghai went south. After spending a couple years in a Federation jail he was dragooned into the Federation Survey Corp where he made a name for himself. After several terms of good service he made a name for himself after defusing a tense situation near Saturn, but after being passed over for promotion, skipped town with his signing bonus.

Akratic Method as Charlie Phelps: Space Loser: A humble merchant from the UN, Charlie saved and scraped his money to put a down payment on a ship and crew. He then promptly lost everything in several bad deals and now follows the group to hopefully sponge some success off them to get back on his feet.

Adventure 1 Write Up:

The party started off in a small bar in Oculas City, a settlement on the moon Stahl orbiting the planet Mariposa in the Proxima Centauri system. These strangers were thrown together after a shuttle crash damaged the city's life support systems, endangering everyone and temporarily damaging the artificial gravity. After introductions, they helped save the bartender who was wounded in the ensuing moon-quakes and moved to the evacuation point in the city's shuttle port (though only after an impromptu game of human space pinball after the gravity shut down).

Once in the port though, they were recruited by security administrator Rai Vinsuana to help evacuate a damaged habitation dome whose residents weren't leaving. On the way though, they were accosted by a group of looters in the tunnels beneath the city, though thanks to some quick words an the intimidating presence of military grade weapons compared to pipes and cudgels, the criminals disperses without incident. Upon nearing the dome, the group was contacted by reclusive millionaire Robert de'ATH, who wanted them to come rescue him from a group of criminals looking to break into his mansion. The group though managed to fob him off for several hours, promising assistance later, so they could focus on the dome.

Upon entering the dome, they were confronted by several armed citizens organized by Parker Viers, a former private in the UN army who upon feeling the monquakes and explosions, assumed the worst and thought the base was under attack. Rallying the citizens of Morningstar dome, he prepared an impromptu defense, but was successfully talked down by Sergeant Tauron and helped escort his people to the space port. Contacting Rai with the good news, the party was then re-routed to the Deep Tunnels to rescue a group of trapped miners. Upon entering the tunnels though, a massive cave-in ensued and nearly killed several party members but they successfully made it to the control room for the tunnels. Once there they were horrified to learn the landing pad's support struts were in danger of collapse. At the insistence of the miners (t to save many more innocents), they re-routed the rescue robots to the landing pads to enact emergency repairs. Not content to leave the miners behind, Jake Deadman ran into the tunnels once more and reached the miners, planting charges and clearing the cave in.

After the rescue, the party bounced across the surface to go fix the life support. After an hour of travel they reached the crash site of Flight 10, the shuttle that caused the whole incident. After trying to move down the deep crater, Charlie Phelps lost his footing and accidentally caused a mini avalanche of rock and duranium shards. Suits damaged, the group managed to improvise suit patches with medical gel. Afterwards they fixed the life support just in time.

With the city safe, the group attended to one last unresolved issue. Tracking the life signs near Mr. de'ATH's mansion, they tracked him and his captors down and cornered them in a small habitation district. Using their raw charisma, they convinced half the gang to surrender and brutally slew three others before the leader surrendered, grateful Mr. de'ATH gave each rescuer 5,000 credits. With Mr. de'ATH the Miners, the Morningstar residents and Oculus safe, the party departed on a rescue shuttle bound for the RCS Thunderchild, when the received a message about a job offer...

All in all a good session and I hope we can play again.

ASK ME ABOUT STICKING WITH A YEARS-LONG LETS PLAY OF THE MOST COMPLICATED SPACE SIMULATION GAME INVENTED, PLAYING BOTH SIDES, AND SPENDING HOURS GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND TO ENSURE INTERNET STRANGERS ENJOY THEMSELVES
UNS Bassae: 55m km from Jamestown, 28th July 2037, 15:10 UNT

"Helm, begin the course obfuscation program," orders CMDR Chiwie.

"Aye, sir," responds the helmsman. "We'll be taking three different headings over the next two hours."

Chiwie nods, studying the plotter in his aug. It contains a display of Bassae's maneuvers over the next several hours. An array of random headings will gradually take Bassae over 425m km from Jamestown, in the general--but not exact--direction of the Hakahaka jump gate. Adjustments to the maneuvers will be made pending subsequent detections of the Khopesh.

Two hours later, Chiwie brings Bassae to a halt and orders a single sensor ping.

"Sir, the Khopesh is right on the location of our last sweep," says Lietenant Commander Wolz. "As soon as we lit up, it started moving this way. Looks like the plan is working." He offers an uneasy smile.

"Sure does, XO," replies Chiwie. "Let's see what happens after another three hours." The commander unbuckles and floats toward the hatch heading down to the amenities deck. "I'll be grabbing a quick bite, maybe a short nap. Alert me if anything comes up. You have the bridge, XO."

Wolz salutes and watches the hatch close behind Chiwie.

UNS Bassae: 89 km from Jamestown, 28th July 2037, 22:10 UNT

An insistent tone snaps Chiwie awake, images of Mind organisms scattering as full alertness returns. The tone is a notification of a call from the bridge. He sub-vocalizes a command, accepting the connection request. "What is it, XO?"

"Khopesh is right on target, sir," responds Wolz. His voice is colored by the surreal overtones associated with sound being piped directly into Chiwie's auditory nerve. "We might be cutting it a tad close if we continue on the program as scheduled."

Chiwie calls up the plotter. "Skip directly to Waypoint 14," he orders.

"Aye, sir," acknowledges Wolz. "We should be there right in time for our next sweep. Lieutenant Pernau will have the bridge until we're there. Good night, sir." The call clicks off and Chiwie collapses back into his bunk, exhaustion catching up with him.

UNS Bassae: 130m km from Jamestown, 29th July 2037, 3:19 UNT

The next time Chiwie awakens, it's to the real, external sound of klaxons. He snaps into wakefulness, pulls on his soft suit, and heads for the bridge, checking his watch. It's just after 3 AM, ship-time. While on the way forward, he contacts Wolz via the aug. "What's going on, XO?"

"It's the Khopesh, sir," replies Wolz. "She's not where we predicted she would be. She's less than 20 million klicks away."

Chiwie brings up the sensor plot, the burning red dot of the Khopesh marking its location nearly 50 million kilometers away from its expected position. "I'm on my way to the bridge, XO." Dr. Snark will have to rework his theory on the jellies' tactical abilities.

When he reaches the bridge, Chiwie finds Wolz in the command couch. The XO yields the seat, and Chiwie straps in. "I take it the contact is now moving toward us?" he says dourly.

"Aye, sir," responds Wolz. "It's about forty minutes out. It likely can't spot us except at relatively short range, but it's no longer simply following us from sweep point to sweep point. It's trying to anticipate our moves, and it seems to grasp that we're heading generally toward Hakahaka. Look." Wolz highlights the average trajectory of the obfuscation program, which was taking Bassae on a general course about 10° toward stellar south of the path to the Hakahaka gate. Wolz superimposes the Khopesh's recent course, which is almost directly toward the Hakahaka gate.

"They're trying to cut us off," Chiwie nods, understanding. "They want to get between us and WATCHTOWER." He studies the plot again, back-projecting the courses of the ships. "It's pure luck they didn't stumble across us during over the last couple hours. Twenty minutes difference . . . here, and we'd be almost right on top of them. Certainly within their sensor envelope." The realization of just how close Bassae has come to suffering the same fate as Klondike and Kagayan rushes over Chiwie. A bead of sweat forms at his temple, the only external sign of his nervousness. Wolz doesn't miss it.

"Orders, sir?" asks the XO. He adjusts the plot again.

"In the forty minutes it will take the contact to reach us, we can be anywhere on the light blue circle. That's assuming they make straight for us and don't attempt another blind intercept."

"Contact Commodore Corbett and 1st Fleet. And have the helm prepare to move at any time. I need a second to think."

Wolz nods, shifting into the aug to open a channel to Cape Town.

At Earth, a graduate of the UN Advanced Leadership Academy accepts his UNIN commission. CMDR ForeverBWFC, like many officers in his class, developed a deep fascination with the Belnar during his adolescence. As is typical with new ALA graduates, CMDR ForeverBWFC is granted command of one of the UN's Dragon's Teeth meson defense installations.

Elsewhere, 1st Fleet orders Task Group THESEUS to split. Rear Admiral Emily Chadwick transfers her command to the Berlin IIM-class cruiser Minsk. Along with her sister ships, Minsk will form Task Group RAMPART, which will continue on toward Roanoke to assist in that system's defense. The other capital ships of THESEUS and their escorts will turn back toward the Klondike-Kagayan Gate, resuming Operation LABYRINTH.

This shifted Chadwick to Minsk, Aethernet to Gibraltar, and BwenGun to Prague.

Okay, so the jellies are smart enough to do some pattern recognition. Fine. I'll concede that much.

More importantly, it's good to learn this now, instead of learning it as the Khopesh opens fire on the Bassae.

With the MIND actively searching rather than simply reacting, a 6 hour gap should still work. The course changes seem to be keeping it relatively in line with Hakahaka, so you should still be able to keep it tracking in with longer runs between sweeps.

Also, I believe you need to choose your course of action at this moment, with it so close to you. I'd advise a sharp turn away - in the direction of WP17 to get as much distance between you as possible. Since your active will go off before you start moving, it shouldn't be able (although with the MIND, who the gently caress knows) to determine if you have changed courses. Once you dodge out, you can swing back around and the longer sweep period should help you stand off.

Up to you.

What about changing course before switching off the active and then going on the intended course? Would it try to predict the future position assuming known variables or does it just run straight for the last known location?

Certainly possible to do that. It appears that initially they were heading straight for last known positions, but now are attempting to predict based on what they know.

Is it not clear from the update that the contact has changed behavior? The last bit is specifically about that, including Wolz pointing it out to the audience.

I just want to make sure I'm presenting the information clearly.

No one knows how they react to transponders, as none of the ships in Roanoke have one switched on.

Ansibles are tightbeam (not broadcast) communication devices. Military ansibles use hardware encryption which is effectively unbreakable without knowing the ansible's configuration. Thus, to intercept and decrypt ansible communications would require both a) actually being in the LOS of the signal and b) having captured an ansible hardware encryption description. The Khopesh is not currently on the LOS to the Hakahaka gate from Bassae, and there have been no known compromises of Bassae's hardware encryption scheme.

I think the best part of the session was when we realized that we could in fact hijack a warship. We were interrogating a captive to see what he knew, and it went something like this:

:smuggo:: Where are the rest of your men?
:ohdear:: They're scattered throughout the ship, we used shuttles to get on board and drill holes in it.
:smuggo:: So the shuttles came from a mothership? And you would have access codes for said ship?
:ohdear:: ...Yes?

TRAVELLER Follow-UP

Video link for the session, now with 90% less echo!

After successfully saving Oculus City and many of its citizens from a slow death in vacuum, the party was brought to Tiptree station, a trade port in the Proxima Centauri system. Here they were to meet their contact, a man offering them a job working for the company he represents out in the 61 Cygni system. Receiving a 5,000 euro per person signing bonus, the party boarded a shuttle to take them to the Monica Hepburn, a super freighter and personnel transport. In line they met Alden Sarratt, a former merchant marine who trained like an actual marine, more skilled in combat than the finer arts of price negotiation. In line they were required to hand over all non-clothing items over one kilogram due to cryo concerns, but SIR Tarquin Black opted to break down a hunting rife and sneak it in with him into Cryo.

The group was awaken as the Monica Hepburn was on the outskirts of the Groombridge system. A power surge had killed many of the people in their cryo pod section, but they were not without information. Engineer Third Class Angel Duncan, a crew member on board the Hepburn informed the group about a pirate attack on the mega freighter. Requesting their help in saving a damaged cryo tray, the group trekked through the live quarters (and cursed not securing a spot in the more swanky quarters). Staging an ambush on patrolling pirates, their attack ran into a complication when, recovering from cryo fugue, SIR Tarquin Black had a seizure as a result of sneaking heavy gear into cryo. Despite Robert Sternes effort to help him, all he managed to do was punch his party members trying to assist. Meanwhile Paul Mendez and Alden attacked pirates with knives and stun batons.

Capturing two of the pirates, the group began interrogation, the pirates belonged to a larger pirate organization known as the Shrikes and they were hired by a group called the Frontier Liberation Organization to attack the Hepburn while they stole several containers from the cargo bay. After Alden accidentally killed one of the pirates WITH HIS BARE HANDS, the survivor also handed over his access codes to the pirate ship he served on. Saving the cryo pod, the group reached the outer cargo bay and recovered their gear (after crew member Angel vented the bay of atmosphere, killing the pirates there), before commandeering a shuttle and landing on the pirate ship. Thanks to some fast bluffing by SIR Tarquin the pirates though the shuttle was one of their own, and thanks to fast shooting done by Jake Deadmen and Robert Steerne, the first group of pirates were killed. Thanks to more bluffing the group go the drop on the bridge crew of the pirate ship, killing many of them before htey knew what was going on. In a brief zero-g battle though, many ship computers were damaged or destroyed and a hole was put in the bridge. But they were successful and took the ship! Resolved, they now look to the mega freighter to save engineer Duncan, who they want to recruit for their new hip.

Random Notes

-Cryo pod regulations are NOT suggestions.

-Chases's character Alden has almost maximum intelligence and strength, which might help explain how he accidentally punched a man to death in game.

-Nothing excites players more than the notion that they might be able to steal a ship.

Normally I would have a humorous summation of the session's events, but this one had too many hysterical moments to recount in a short period of time. Basically, we escape from the freighter and attempt to get into the seedy Cornucopian underworld with varying degrees of success. It is a lot funnier and more explosive than that summary would suggest.

UNS Bassae: 205m km from Jamestown, Roanoke System, 29th July 2037, 8:15 UNT

CMDR Chiwie settles in for the start of his shift on the bridge of UNS Bassae, having just finished a briefing with the prior watch. For the last five hours, Bassae has been running quiet, sprinting toward her next waypoint before returning to her convoluted decoy course toward Hakahaka. The first turn had come two and a half hours prior, some 50 million kilometers astern; the next is still 20 million kilometers ahead, an hour away.

Chiwie secures his retention straps and turns to the overnight department head reports. He's just managed to skim the summary of the engineering report when an alert klaxon sounds from the bridge loudspeakers.

Reports forgotten, Chiwie barks, "Report!"

The sensor operator looks up, face ashen. "Sir, embedded EM sensors have picked up a strong non-background signal. Signature matches that of the observed Khopesh active in the action at the Hakahaka gate."

Wolz catapults through the hatch leading toward the crew quarters. "What's going on, Captain?"

Chiwie grimaces. "Our luck ran out, Len. Sound the general alarm, direct all essential crew to action stations and everyone else to the escape pods."

As Wolz cinches himself into his seat and begins preparing Bassae for combat operations, Chiwie considers his options.

I beg of you, don't ship away Jones, he has a wife and kids!

So Chiwie. Remember how you had that insane plan to use the blob's escape pod as a bomb? Well, now's a good a time as any...

On a related note, I hate this damned ship. Hopefully it'll try to head back through Hakahaka otherwise we're losing those blob prisoners.

Commander, make full speed to JP1 and activate your active sensor to keep watch for any unauthorized transits.
Nothing we can do, the sharp turn back put Bassae right in their path, and they've got you now. Do what you can but...RIP UNS Bassae, your attempt to draw the enemy into battle upheld the finest traditions of UNIN service and humanity.

You will be posthumously recommended for the United Nations Gold Star of Service (UNIN Star 1st Class).

I have returned from negotiations with Comrade Ignatov and have found him to be quite agreeable.
I believe it is peace in our time.

Neither of these are bad ideas Both of these are terrible ideas but worth trying, since your only other choice is "die". Goonspeed, Chiwie!
