It's old enough to have a couple specks of rust, and the finish on the stock is a little weathered, but not dinged up or anything. edit: After looking, my #22031xxx should be a 1978 rifle. Did some plinking with it yesterday, I really like the ghost ring with the brass bead front. Dr Ozziemandius fucked around with this message at May 12, 2013 around 16:41 |

Well like I said I would here is a pic of my Winchester 1894.![]() And here is a pic of the rust as a result of my old man storing it in a soft case for over a decade. ![]() Unfortunately, before I'd gotten any advice there had already been a previous attempt at the screw, but like I've said the value of this gun has already been destroyed and it wouldn't even be considered for sale anyway. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics.

![]() I hadn't pictured it being that bad... Honestly, were it my rifle, I'd remove as much rust as I could with a brass wire wheel brush in a low-speed Dremel, remove the buttplate and replace it with a repro.

Basically what needs to be done. Also you'd be shocked how not-terrible things can look once you get under the raised up active rust like you're seeing on there. ALso: the value of that gun absolutely isn't ruined, and it should be insured accordingly. It's certainly been very badly affected, but not ruined by a long shot.

Right, it's not ruined at all - And the more I think about it, you might not even need to replace the buttplate. Provided the rust hasn't pitted all the way through and the surface crud can be removed, I bet it would still be usable. Keep that gun clean and oiled and stored in a dry environment and it'll be a great shooter for another 100 years.

Well, it'll hurt the resale value, sure. But it sounds like you plan to keep the gun in the family, so that's a non-issue.

I just A reblue certainly humps the value of a collectable, but they still have value and it can be considerable. You can find all sorts of high end collectors who will swear up and down that anything that isn't a 98% original finish in perfect shape has "zero collector value" but they're full of horseshit - it has zero collector value to guys like them who have collections totaling in the six figures and who don't even look at a gun that costs less than a monthly full time paycheck for someone earning minimum wage. On the other hand, you have a gently caress load of far less vocal mid-range collectors who happily gobble up those "worthless" guns, sometimes at very decent prices. Say Grandpa had the family Luger reblued in the 70s and a decent job was done of it - no obliterated or even softened markings, not some totally crazy inappropriate finish, etc. All matching gun, including mag, maybe even a less than common year and maker. It might not be a potential $3k gun any more, but it's sure as poo poo worth more than the clapped out, 90s-import, mixmasters that routinely pull $600 on GB.
