Hello music lovers and friends. This thread/post focuses on the music genre I adore a lot and have been listening to for years now. It's music that mainstream audience would often appreciate being used in movies, video games and other creative pieces of art rather than listening to it as music exclusively. Ambient music as almost any music style is divided in numerous genres, such as Ambient, Psybient or Psychedelic ambient, Lo-Fi, Chill, Goa, Psytrance and so forth. Ways of listening Youtube - As with all music and anything really, you can find it on Youtube. If it has been released, it's on Youtube. The problem occurs when you want to find something new you don't know about yet. For that reason I recommend.. Digitally Imported radio (DI.fm) - It's one of the more popular internet radio websites out there. It has various radio stations related to Ambient music. (Ambient, Space Dreams, PsyChill, Chillout Dreams, Chillout are all great stations to find dreamy tunes on). DI.fm also has an iPhone/Android application called DI Radio - it works on Wi-FI and 3G. Soundcloud - Another great place to search for music with often higher quality than found on Youtube. Purchase and Support the artists. Don't waste your internets! Fill your free space on hard drive instead. Beatport.com, iTunes and official websites of producers are all great places to purchase music from. Release medium As most electronic music these days Ambient music is released in 3 ways. Singles, EPs (a pack of two or three tracks) and albums (often released in a 1h+ long mix to deliver seamless experience) Notable artists - If you are new to this genre and want to get a feel for it quickly, check out some of these artists' works. It should give you an idea of what kind of a beast this is and whether or not you want to seek out for more. Carbon Based Lifeforms - World of Sleepers and Interloper are albums that show the very essence of what Ambient music is all about. Definite must listens. Eskadet - Up-and-coming producer from Russia. His latest album called Solitudes is amazing. First track of the album Vibrasphere - More Chill'ish tunes of Ambient music. Lots of content done by these guys. Here's one of them I am not sure how many Ambient lovers are out here, since I'm new to this community, but I would sure love to hear feedback on this genre. Well, if this is the first time you've posted a new thread here, good job. Informative OP that's not a chore to read - good work. I'm not sure if it counts as ambient (I get a little fuzzy on all these genres) but my favorite album anywhere near this sound of all time is Eluvium's Copia. Seeing You Off The Edges Radio Ballet Reciting The Airships If anyone knows any artists who do, I guess, piano/strings based ambient music, I'd love a few suggestions. Not too hot on drone music, though.

Those are some beautiful pieces. I find it somewhat hard to locate a place where I could purchase these, but I will get around to it eventually. Ambient Piano is something I quite enjoy, but never found time to fully investigate, thus I unfortunately cannot provide links anything spectacular in this sub-genre. Buuuuuut, as I have played piano for several years, I do love the sound of it. These are not so much ambient music samples, but nevertheless soundtracks I like. Motoi Sakuraba's composed soundtracks for video game called Dark Souls - Gwyn, Lord of Cinder and Nameless Song. The later one borders dronish end of ambient music. :P Endless Melancholy Some may find this kind of dry and lacking a real emotion, but what the hell I dig it. Finally, I have found that soundcloud has piles of great piano works. Here's a couple of them. After the Rain Piano Ambient I never keep soundcloud stuff bookmarked, since it's more of a on the spot listening. It might be not as handy to type in genre every time you want to listen to something though.

Sorry to be a nitpicker, but how is psytrance and goa subgenres of ambient music? They are distinctly their own genres with their own roots. Edit: to add something to the topic. Brian Eno ought to be mentioned in an ambient music thread, he pretty much coined the term. Steve Roach, Robert Rich and Lustmord are also worth a look for more of the typical ambient music which is not reliant on beats. As for the beat oriented ambient we have The Orb, who pretty much were one of the pioneers of what became the stuff that got played in the chillout room of raves that time onwards. And a whole slew of other artists who came in the early 90s and makes up a good portion of releases by Warp Records during that time. Names such as Seefeel, early Autechre, Aphex Twin (Selected Ambient Works 85-92 and Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2, both essential if you are into this sort of music). Then there is the entire catalogue of Pete Namlook and FAX records (should mention their catalogue is massive and has a lot of misses but also many gems), including the three albums with Richie Hawtin as From Within. Another release from FAX worth checking out is Namlook & Higher Intelligence Agency - S.H.A.D.O. And then there is Norway's Geir Jensen aka. Biosphere who's Substrata album is considered a classic. As for piano based, you might want to check out Alva Noto+Ryuichi Sakamoto's albums (Vrioon, Insen, Revep and Summvs). It's Alva Noto with his glitchy electronics (not in an overpowering way) and Sakamoto's melancholy piano playing. Sakamoto has also done a couple of collaborations with Fennesz of which I think Cendre is the stronger one, the later Flumina is a double CD, but IMO lacks the cohesiveness of the earlier album, but it still has some pretty pieces.

I be spamming but just came up with some other nice ambient albums. Robert Henke's (the man behind the more techno infused Monolake) albums are also good, especially the "Layering Buddha", which is based on heavily manipulated sounds from a simple machine that plays loops called the Buddha Machine made by the Chinese group FM3. Very atmospheric stuff. Then there are some albums by Rod Modell, more known under his dubtechno pseudonym DeepChord, who has released some nice pure ambient albums with Michael Mantra, "Radio Fore" and "Sonic Continuum" and did a remix of Michael Mantra's "Sonic Alter" album as DeepChord. Modell also recorded an album as Waveform Transmission which is also straight up sound painting ambient. He's also recorded under the pseudonym Global Systems Silently Moving, releasing the album "Altering the Air" which is very like Wolfgang Voigt's Gas project. And Gas is considered pretty seminal in the ambient/techno circles. At first listen it might sound very loopy and repetitive but it has something hypnotic in it upon closer listening. All the Gas albums were conveniently released in a single boxset called "Nah und Fern" a couple of years ago and shouldn't be a problem to acquire, unlike the original albums which still go for exuberant prices on the second hand market.

I'd also recommend (pretty sure it's crossposted in the avantgarde thread) William Basinski's "Disintegration Loops". Very relaxing couple second loops of various tape recordings that "disintegrate" over the course of the track. Some tracks are like 45 minutes long but it's interesting to see how they degrade over time and give you an odd feeling if you pay attention during the whole thing.

This is my ambient playlist for working or staring off into space. For Spotify I think it is pretty drat good and features artists such as Brian Eno, Biosphere, Loscil, Eluvium, Tim Hecker, The Hope Blister (an Ivo Watts-Russel project), Riceboy Sleeps, and Stars of the Lid. In other words, objectively the best ambient music. I don't really actively seek out ambient music to add to my library, but when I get an album that has ambient tracks on it, I can really appreciate it. Hopefully this thread can get me started on the genre, but I do have a contribution: Glacial 1602 by Bass Communion Half of this album (Molotov and Haze) is ambience and the other half is harsh noise, and this is the better of the two ambient tracks in my opinion.

Thank you  I'm currently mixing a track from the new album, actually.I've got 5 tracks written and recorded. 2 of those I thought were completely done being mixed but I realized they weren't so I keep working on them (you can check out the work-in-progress versions here: http://soundcloud.com/betaproject ), and the other 3 I hope to finish mixing soon. I'm shooting for at least 10 tracks, so I suppose it'll be released whenever I can get another 5+ written/recorded/mixed and be content with the way they sound overall. This album has a couple actual instruments on it instead of 100% softsynth stuff! I wouldn't say it's straightforward ambient but it'll be ambient-influenced and there might be a few proper ambient sections in some of the songs. I've never received a cent for any of my solo stuff, but I don't mind it that way. It's my favorite hobby and I absolutely love doing it so I don't really care about getting paid for it  I guess I could offer this new album as pay-what-you-want type deal, though.

Awesome. Keep us posted! To contribute to the thread: I recently got into electronic music, and discovered Benn Jordan, aka The Flashbulb. He has a pretty extensive back catalog on his bandcamp, and while most of his music is more glitchy/jazzy than ambient, his tribute album to the late, great Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot, is an real spaced out treat. Solar Fields is a producer from Sweden who makes nice ambient/psybient and is a labelmate of Carbon Based Lifeforms (among other similar artist such as Aes Dana and H.U.V.A. Network) on Ultimae Records, so if you haven't checked out that label and you like this sort of stuff then what are you waiting for! I absolutely love "Hearts of Space". I'm lucky enough to live in an area that carries it on public radio. There's nothing better coming home on a Friday night and unwinding to HOS. It's what got me interested in ambient in the first place. The playlists are pretty eclectic, but they lean toward Roach, Eno, Rich, et al. on most weeks. A few years back, I picked up the album Cold Summer by Lull not really knowing anything about it. I love Nuojuva Halava by Ous Mal. It's not a name I see come up much, but I got it since it was The Silent Ballet's album of the year a little while ago, and can listen to it on repeat for hours. Oh man, I missed this thread. Digitally Imported got me through college 8 years ago. I would put the chillout station on and get the best sleep in my dorm room. I still have all my Blank and Jones Relax albums.
