Did Everquest pop your MMO cherry? Are you tired of WoW and its copycats dumbing down your MMO experience? Have you never played EQ but want to see what all the fuss is about? Do you sometimes have nightmares about running around naked trying to find your corpse in the middle of West Karana?

Project 1999 is a free emulated Everquest server (run through eqemulator.org) that has been developed to recreate the original Everquest experience as accurately as possible. It is the result of a demand for reliving the classic age of Everquest, that is, Vanilla through Velious, that Sony is unable or unwilling to meet. You may have heard of Sony's progression or EQMac servers. EQMac was a great alternative for people looking for expansions up to PoP but is now defunct. The progression servers have many of the new features of contemporary EQ built in, which, for many of us nostalgic old-timers, makes playing on them completely undesirable. Project 1999 eliminates these features as much as possible and overall is the most accurate classic experience currently available. If later versions of EQ are your cup of tea check this thread for more info: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3472675

Project 1999 is a work in progress based off the Everquest Titanium client. There are some legal limitations for the developers, especially when it comes to modifying the client. The Vanilla-look client can't be hardcoded, though people have come up with UIs that make your client look Velious era, or even Vanilla-era to some degree. Also, there are some intentional differences, mostly ones designed to prevent faction/experience/plat grinding exploits, protect the economy, and keep the raid scene from getting too awful. New raid rules have been put into place recently that are similar to some of the player agreements on various classic servers, but, of course, are much spergier and detailed to match the rules-lawyery attitude of many raid guilds on this server. There are a few weird/random things that aren't classic, but for the most part, the developers do a good job making things feel right.

ARE THERE OTHER WEIRDOS LIKE ME WHO ACTUALLY PLAY THIS?

The community of classic Everquest has been recreated to a large degree and most people are polite, friendly, and at least somewhat concerned with their character's reputation. Unfortunately, due to people's more recent experience with games that give you whatever content you want on a silver (instanced) platter, you will occasionally run into people who will attempt to bully, rules-lawyer, or grief you out of a camp or group. This is most noticeable at high-value item camps that are fairly easily soloable by lots of different classes, but is thankfully not a general problem. The endgame raiding scene is extremely competitive, much more so than most live servers, which has led to strained and at times openly hostile relationships between the various top raiding guilds. Raid guild drama is pretty darn classic and this server has it in spades, both in game and on the forums. There are guilds that raid casually, though these guilds tend not to kill as many of the most desirable mobs. There are leveling guilds and community guilds as well if that's more your speed.

Peak hours have regularly seen 1500-1700 characters online for the last year. Due to strict policies against multi-boxing accounts, almost all characters are unique players, which greatly encourages grouping. There are plenty of opportunities to group at all levels if you get to the proper zones. If you need to figure out where to be, ask in the thread or do some /who all searches in game: '/w all 28 32' is good for finding people around level 30 for instance.

CURRENT PROGRESSION (Apr 22nd, 2015): Kunark + Epics, VELIOUS RELEASE IMMINENT

The server has been running publicly since Fall 2009. The plane of fear was introduced during the following winter. Hate was opened (with a Bloody Kithicor event) in Feb 2010, which was shortly followed by the opening of the Temple of Solusek Ro and the first mid-level class armor sets, as well as the removal of dropped items like Rubicite, Manastone, Guise of the Deceiver, and Journeyman Boots (go here for a more complete list - JBoots are now a quest result of course). The Plane of Sky and The Hole were made available later in 2010. In the spring of 2011, Kunark was released, and not long after some drops were removed (check the above link for details). Most recently, Veeshan's Peak was opened and the original class Epic Quests were implemented. The Velious beta server has been running for over a year now and the work on the last classic expansion will soon be released. Expect a huge surge in population on both servers when Velious hits that will likely last to some degree through the summer.

Here are some things that are still in: Class/Race XP penalties, original Fear and Hate mobs/gods, level capped (52 max) Nagafen/Vox raids, original epic mobs (Ragefire is still in SolB for instance), and pre-revamp zones like Cazic Thule, Chardok, Droga, etc. Velious will quickly introduce progression changes, including the vanquishing of class based XP penalties, a list of items that will no longer drop, and, eventually, epic and planar revamps and chardok B. If you have a specific question about progression, ask in the thread.

ME AND THE PRIEST OF DISCORD ARE PALS, WHERE'S MY PVP?

Project 1999 includes both a "blue" (PVE) server and a more recently released "red" (PVP) server. Due to the long wait for Velious, Red is now in sync with Blue as far as server progression. While running at roughly 5-15% of the active population of P1999 Blue, Red has become quite popular among goons lately due to features like faster XP (compared to Blue) and a smaller, newer player community. EQ PVP, while pretty much universally acknowledged to be unbalanced and bad, also provides another incentive to be social and group up with people. The PVP is mostly +/- 4 levels so you don't have to be too concerned with high level ganking - twink ganking happens but is largely avoidable by grouping. Here's a post with more details about the PVP and other mechanics on Red:
http://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148678
Many of the devs and GMs involved with P99 are committed to a stable and enjoyable PVP server, and there are long term plans for a racial/team PVP server, which may include an eventual merger of the current and new PVP servers.

HEY I WANT TO BUY A CHARACTER SO I CAN 2-BOX MACROQUEST AND SHOWEQ!

Project 1999 has strict policies regarding all of the above. Here's a rundown of some of the more common offenses and how they're handled.
  • 3rd party "cheating" software (Macroquest, ShowEQ) = Ban, *HIGH* enforcement + automatic detection - This server has far better hack/cheat detection than anything Sony ever ran. If you run this stuff, even for some benign reason, you will get caught and you will get banned. It's honestly one of the best reasons to play on p1999 over some of the other available classic-ish options out there.
  • 2-Boxing (more than one character per player) = Ban, high enforcement - It is not possible to log in more than one account from the same IP address without a special exemption. Sure, it would be nice if you could mule items, port and powerlevel yourself, but this rule is what ultimately encourages grouping at all levels. The community would be much less classic-like without this rule. GMs have gotten pretty good about catching people who try to get around this with proxies and cell-phone tethering etc. and the community helps to police it.
  • Real Money Trading (trading in game stuff for out of game stuff) = Ban, high enforcement - There was a recent post about plat-generating exploits and RMT bans, so this is definitely something that is being actively enforced. In any case, please do not use this thread for RMT. If you must mix :10bux: with free pixels, just google Project 1999 RMT and you should find what you're looking for. Note to buyers: beware - if you end up getting caught you can lose your P99 character/items/plat and the seller will typically get to keep your dolla bills, WoW/D3 gold, Isk, etc. I know exactly one person who managed to get his money back from a RMT that resulted in a ban.
  • Buying Characters/Accounts = Ban, enforced like RMT - Up until August of 2013, you were allowed to buy and sell accounts for in game currency and items. This was convenient for a certain small subset of players but did very strange things to the economy. It's a good thing that it's gone.
See here for more rules info: http://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2651

If you want to play with people who share your IP address, you will need to apply for an IP exemption here: http://www.project1999.com/forums/announcement.php?f=25 Note: this can take a few weeks to go through.

CLASSIC and SERVER SPECIFIC RESOURCES

You will be able to find some good item and quest info on current EQ fansites like Allakhazam, but some of it is wrong for P99's take on classic EQ.

Official P99 Wiki: http://wiki.project1999.com - This is really your one-stop shop for classic EQ information. Over the last year or two, almost all the important content that used to be available only by digging through archive.org has been added by a legion of dedicated users. Class and race info, spells, maps, items, and most quests are available through this page. There's also a Magelo-style feature that lets you put up a wiki page for your character and list their gear to be displayed graphically, like so:

Maps - EQAtlas mirror: http://www.allakabor.com/eqatlas/atlas.html - EQ Map Preserve: http://www.steveprutz.com/eq/
Spells - Classic through Luclin spell list (ignore Velious and Luclin spells for now): http://crys.org/everquest/spells.htm
Auction trackers - the official wiki has prices for many items on each individual item's page, but many of them are out of date or have been manipulated by the people who upload logs. I'd recommend this tracker instead: http://ahungry.com/eqauctions/. You can also check out the East Commonlands subforum on the P99 website.

WHERE DA GOONS AT?

Blue

Invalid Guild is dead, long live Unknown Guild!

The new official blue goon guild is <Unknown Guild>. Invalid Guild finally got nuked after 3 years due to some silliness from the server admins, but welp! While it is the official guild for goons, UG is always in a state of flux with regard to activity, and most high level players are tagged with one of the many raiding guilds. If anyone wants an invite and can't find a tagged person with officer/leader access in game, (do /w all 'unknown guild' ) then ask in the thread and I'll get you taken care of. Feel free to add my characters (Bugen, Illtair, Smrt, Hootie) to your friends list and bother me in game as well.

Red
The goon guild on Red is semi-dead at the moment but <SLAMDUNKATRON> will probably return. See thread for details.

Right now I am playing on Red. The population is incredibly low, so most if not all the time you feel like you're playing a single player game. Rolling a non-solo class is a losing battle since most of the newbie hunting grounds are devoid of life. I saw maybe two groups during my time leveling my druid from 1-16 in Greater Faydark and Crushbone.

Most players I see who are in this for the long haul are playing solo classes now in order to obtain gear to twink a non-solo class later.

Negativity aside, right now Red99 content is entirely pre-Kunark. I am not very familiar with the Everquest timeline, but the manastone is still in the game and I don't think Hate or Sky has been implemented yet.

Shaman question:

Which would you all consider better, the shaman regen line or the fungi staff click effect? Obviously the fungi staff effect roots you, but it's also (i believe) comparable to the highest of the shaman regen spells (not including torpor.)

So at like a level 40+ situation, would the fungi staff be superior for soloing?

Fungi stick is obviously going to be more mana efficient, and it's 15/hp a tick, just like the level 52 spell Regrowth, so it's definitely superior from 35-51. After 52 it's mostly just a convenience and a small mana-save. Of course it also snares the target (not root) which, depending on your style of soloing, can be more or less annoying. Shaman do not tend to kite, so I don't think the snare is too bad for them. Really the only downside to it for shaman is that it costs 30k-ish for the post-nerf version. Whether or not you want to drop 30k for a slightly better mana-free regen spell for 10-15 levels is up to you and your pocketbook.

I will say that a fungi tunic is a much better item for soloing if you do not have one yet and are getting close to the necessary funds to pick one up. If you're lacking the plat for a tunic, it might be worth getting a staff and flipping it once you get enough for a tunic. It's also worth pointing out that high level shaman spells are quite expensive. You might need that 30k to put towards Torpor or another good, rare spell down the line.

My shaman is 53, the level you get the new regen spell. I've been trying to get a fungi staff because when I solo, I hit it hard and am constantly in a state balancing mana and health. Regrowth is 300 mana, which is a big chunk, and not having to budget to cast it several times an hour would make things much easier on me.

In the end, its just a convenience, and you just need to decide if its worth the 30k + to you. For me, it will help me level faster, so I think its worth it.

It should be around 225k right now (source), but I've never heard from anyone who I'd believe what it actually costs on p1999. I tried to get access to a few when the Kunark beta server was up so I could test this out (I had 30 billion or so plat because of loot table decimal place errors) but I never managed to do so.
