I HAVE TO USE MY SOUND SWORD NOW.

You Look Nice Today is a Journal of Emotional Hygiene, and a revered comedy podcast.

Ranging from 20 minutes to an hour, YLNT is a free-flowing conversation between three very good friends about nothing in particular. Usually they are coming up with ways to make money for the podcast, but most often they talk about their embarrassing pasts.

The show is tightly edited, and rarely is a moment wasted. You WILL get its theme song stuck in your head, because it punctuates some of the best gags and goofs you'll ever hear.

The podcast was most active between 2008 and 2009, but the frequency of episodes dropped to a slow trickle in 2010. Many pronounced the podcast dead and unsubscribed.

However, on March 30th of 2012, the YLNT board of directors issued a letter to their shareholders promising a renewed effort to bring the show back to a regular schedule... Namely, on the second day of every month.

The Founders

From left to right:

Adam Lisagor @lonelysandwich
Deep-voiced, taciturn, hirsute, and lithe. Adam, also known as "Lonely Sandwich", "Sandwich", or "Sandy", edits the show and plays the straight man.

Sandy is the founder of Sandwich Video, a commercial production company that does some of the finest work in the field.

Scott Simpson @scottsimpson
Considered to be the "host" of the show, he carries out each meeting's agenda and is quick to capitalize on veins of thought that might turn into lucrative ventures for the organization.

Nobody really knows what Scott does for a living, but it's believed that he works either at Apple, or at a paper company.

Merlin Mann @hotdogsladies
Merlin is the throbbing, hummingbird heart of YLNT. The oldest, wisest, and most frenetic of the hosts, Merlin is the master of the enthusiastic derail. There's nothing else to be said about him that does him justice... He just needs to be experienced.

Merlin is a professional speaker and blogger who focuses on topics like time, attention, and productivity (although he hates that word). You can also hear him on Roderick on the Line and Back to Work.

How Do I Get Started?
There are roughly 40 episodes of You Look Nice Today in existence.

Obviously, the best way to approach this show is to listen from start to finish. You won't regret the time. You don't need to worry about old episodes being outdated... Each episode is evergreen, and is as relevant today as it was when it was released.

The You Look Nice Today blog features the Starter Pack, a curated sampling of the five best beginner's episodes, for those who are daunted by the prospect of starting fresh.

In their Shareholder's Letter, they highlighted some entry points.

quote:

Here are some hastily selected links to get you started:

Best Starter Episode: Sacks-Minnelli Disease
Fan Favorite Episode: Truck Spank
Good Adam Episode: OPN♥WDE
Good Scott Episode: The Good Part
Good Merlin Episode: Vachina
Best Live Episode: The Magic Number
For Pros Only: Tang Tangs
Our Most Recent Episode: Razzledazzle
Our First Episode: Morning Powder

You can also check out their short film, The Noises Rest if you'd like a quick sample of their flavor and style.

What is This Thread For?
This is a place for YLNT superfans and neophytes alike. Obviously we'll talk about the new episodes as they drop, but I'd love to hear people reminisce about old episodes, and see newcomers offering their first impressions of this show.

Oh, and this is a great place to share Fishstick techniques and trade Razzle Dazzle fan-edit VHS tapes.

If you haven't found any communists in your backyard, you're not looking hard enough!

I am so keen for new You Look Nice Today. Two of my favourite episodes are definitely Nickelpuss and The Tux Age, but most of them make me look like a crazy person laughing on the train.

I thought this podcast was dead and gone for months but I continued being subscribed because the episodes are so fun to listen to. I was giddy as a loving school girl when I refreshed my subscriptions and Razzle Dazzle popped into existence.

Thanks to the thread for introducing me to Back to Work, Merlin's shenanigans are addictive.

Just chiming in here to say that this is the thing that got me to realize that podcasts were their own unique medium, and more so my favorite medium.

Hear hear. I was podcasting before I heard YLNT, but it really is what inspired me to step up my game.

It's frustrating when I try to tell friends about the show, but they ignore the recommendation because they aren't podcast listeners.

Total truth. It's refreshing too because in many ways John Roderick is 180 degrees from Adam and Scott (but at least as funny), so his interactions with Merlin make for a pretty different dynamic.

Yeah, all the dudes of YLNT think of themselves as idiots and are ashamed of their younger selves whereas Roderick thinks he's always right but it works out because he's just one of those guys that can be that way but still likable.

I had no idea who John Roderick was before I knew he was friends with Merlin Mann, but I get every single reference he drops. We must be separated family.

Same here, which is why the Starter Kit is a godsend. The announcement actually spurred one of my friends into listening, starting with Sacks-Minnelli and Truck Spank, so I'm hopeful he'll be hooked soon.

So, anybody else start to whistle whenever they grab their keys now?

I'm really worried that the new episodes aren't going to be as good without Adam doing the editing himself. The editing of the show really is the 4th host.

Did Merlin step up to do the editing? Is this confirmed?

We all knew YLNT slowed down because of Sandwich Video... Maybe now that the business is established, Sandy has time to commit to editing a show once a month.

Edit: I just read on Adam's blog that they've hired a guy to do it. If Adam believes in him, I believe in him.

I'm a big fan of both Back to Work and Roderick on the Line, but I'm ashamed to admit that I never listened to You Look Nice Today until a few days ago. I started from the beginning and now I am hooked. I'm glad that it's back, even though I still have plenty of episodes to get through anyway. This show is incredible.

I've always assumed it was but could never figure out if the segment names mean anything. By the time I decided that they were just filler for edit points I got to an episode where Merlin asked something like "who's up for some Awkward Cake?" and my understanding of You Look Nice Today was set back by a month or two.

gently caress yeah, they're back. If you hear the barista call for "Zap Fet", you know I'm in the house.

Hearing Merlin and John talk poo poo about Jesse Thorn in RotL may have been my peak experience. I love when podcast worlds collide, and Jesse is such a giant target.

Scott is a project manager for iBooks. I'm sad that he moved away from Los Altos, because it's so close to my home town. Remember him talking about Gentry in a live show? My parents have had a free subscription to Gentry Magazine for 15+ years because of their zip code. Beyond that, I went to junior high with the son of the publisher and a girl in my high school class was on the cover of it in a bikini a while back. So hearing an audience in Philly in hysterics over its contents was fantastic.

I think some of it is somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Adam Lisagor is a good friend of Jesse's, and is a producer of his fashion show Put This On.

I know, and I'm sure it is, but Jesse holding court and calling John Roderick out on his sartorial failings is the subject of the discussion, and is entirely in character for all parties. It's somewhere in ep 18-24 of Roderick on the Line. They're all great so just start at the beginning.

i recently blew through all the episodes in random order, and it finally truly clicked when i listened to the mouthbreather episode. going back and re-listening to them again.

with how so tightly edited and the twists they go through each episode i can stop paying attention for like 10 minutes and its in a totally different place, which was my problem the first time.

I don't know how I feel about Roderick on the Line. John is so absolutely honest and Merlin seems... I don't know. It seems kind of exploitative to call up your friend every week and record it for everyone to hear. Can't stop listening to it, though.

I'm not sure I understand this. It's not like John doesn't know what Merlin is doing with the conversations.

I dunno, I think John relishes the opportunity to tell thousands of people How Things Are.

I get what you're saying, but I don't read Merlin's patter as insincerity.

John's motto is "There's nothing wrong with you that can't be solved by a few rear end kickings." I don't think it's possible to exploit that man.

Also, "Putting the Days to Bed" amazing.

All of The Long Winters albums are amazing. Sometimes I get sad that a fourth one hasn't been released yet, but then I just listen to them all in a row, then listen to them all again, and I'm happy again.

As for RoTL, I'm currently working my way through my backlog (currently on ep 11, so). Episodes 8 through 10 made me laugh all the way through, but that's probably due to listening to them way too early in the morning when I only had two hours of sleep before hand.

But anyway, going to be taking a short trip to a nearby town with friends, so I'm going to make them shut up and listen to OPN♥WDE on the way there.

Latest episode was great. It's funny, as much as I love YLNT, it's almost pointless to have a thread about it. There usually isn't much to discuss, it's just a perfect self-contained conversation.

But since this seems to be our de facto thread to discuss Roderick on the Line as well, I'll just say that especially based on the last few eps I think that podcast should be compulsory listening for 18-20ish males. I'm very close to being serious about this.
