Week 3 July 1942 _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Strategic Events War Event: Roll twice on ULTRA table. Torpedo Improvement: None Ultra Information: Intel gives information on South China Sea 1 and 2 and the Bonins. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Boat Transfers The boat transfers start and we come out the loser this week. First boat is S-32, an old S1 boat. She will be commanded by Chunky Monkey and is assigned to Dutch Harbor and the Aleutians campaign. Second is S-33, another S1 boat. She will be commanded by Hattusa and is also assigned to Dutch Harbor and the Aleutian campaign. Then command started pulling ships off the line for refit. We are continuing the refits of P-series boats we started in February. P1 Pike is pulled from Pearl for refit. Jimmy4400nav can choose whether to stay with the boat or request a transfer. She is due back in the winter. P2 Shark is withdrawn from the SW Pacific for refit. Sirspiff can choose whether to stay with the boat or request a transfer. She is due back in the winter. P3 Pollack is also pulled from Pearl. Grizzwold can choose whether to stay with the boat or request a transfer. She is due back in the Fall. So we gained two obsolete boats and gave away three somewhat less obsolete boats. Not a good trade. S1 boats are also now the most numerous class in service with us surpassing the T boats. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Planning Kudos to the Dutch Harbor crews for getting 3 out of 4 old boats past readiness. Shame on Pearl and Fremantle for only getting 3 boats total ready between them. This means that except for the Aleutians we have fewer boats coming out this week then I expected. ![]() The Aleutians is chugging along. We can replace most of the boats heading home this week so this is going well. We may have too many S1 boats up here. I'll watch and transfer a few if the patrol areas get too cramped. ![]() The S Pacific is humming along. I won't have enough boats to replace everything heading home this week but will fill it as much as I can. Note that the West Coast just got a few more boats in. All of our P1 and P2 boats are in refit and we only have 3 of our 5 P3 boats out there. They also still haven't returned Argonaut. ![]() The SW Pacific has a lot of damaged boats heading home. Not a lot of boats out on patrol and not too many to send out this week. Next week we should remedy the problem. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ United States Navy ![]() _______________________________________________________________________________________________ S1 class (14) ![]() ![]() S-18 Randomcheese3 - Daring Ships Sunk: 0 Tonnage Sunk: 0 Named ships sunk: N/A Patrolling Kuriles: Attacks a large convoy and makes two attacks but the slow boat can't get into good firing position and she is caught by the destroyer Minikaze and damaged before she can escape. After five salvos the 20,000 ton merchant is ripped apart and sinks. The boat then spots the carrier Unyo and attacks and three torpedoes impact and detonate, ripping into the hull of the carrier. The ship begins listing and Surcouf shadows the carrier. Later a huge explosion is seen and the 19,000 ton carrier slips under an hour later. Looks like Japanese damage control incompetence finished the job. The patrol continues. I am awarding Super status for this. The normal requirement is three ships totaling 17,000 tons or more. I feel that two ships for 39,000 tons fills the spirit of the rule. This means Surcouf gets a +1 on all torpedo attacks and a +1 to defense. Insanity, I cannot believe the luck here. The gods of probability love this boat. The odds of hitting Unyo were 10% (only shot the ship had too) and the odds of a kill were only 30% on a hit. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ End of Turn Summary Kills this week: 9 (11) Tonnage this week: 27,000 (66,000) Subs lost this week: Total kills: 148 (170) Total tonnage: 450,000 (550,000) Total subs lost: 5 Well, that was amazing. I always do allied subs last and Surcouf was the last sub I ran. In one stroke Zombie Napoleon got over half the tonnage for the week, has the largest merchant kill and the largest warship kill, and his total tonnage is just under triple that of his nearest competitor. We are just under 1/10th of the way to final victory and will probably cross that mark next week. We are still on track for torpedo improvement by the end of the year. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Skipper Actions I need to hear from the following whether they wish to: A. Remain with their boat until the refit is complete and take her out again B. Transfer to training/staff position (leave game) C. Request a new command and go to the transfer pool. Jimmy4400nav, commanding P1 Pike Sirspiff, commanding P2 Shark Grizzwold, commanding P3 Pollack Let me know. Please bold the response. You have until the boat returns to decide but the sooner you get into the transfer pool (if that is your choice) the sooner you are likely to get another boat. The Transfer rules are in the second post in the thread if you want to know how I decide who gets each boat. I need to know whether the following dead skippers wish to: A. Re-enlist a new mk2 skipper in the reserves. Nick Soapdish - formerly commander of Cachalot.

Jebus A Chreeest... the Surcouf just sank Japan's newest escort carrier within the same month it got re-launched. I'm going to assume this is probably its first mission or such. I'm really wondering, between undead skippers, Cthulhu cultist, Chaos God worshipers, ghostly advisers, the favor of the Sidhe, and gods knows what else, what will the IJN turn to, to improve their odds of survival?quote:The ship was requisitioned by the Imperial Japanese Navy in October 1941. Initially, the ship was assigned for transporting prisoners of war. Between 25 November 1941 and 31 May 1942, Yawata Maru was rebuilt in Kure to be an auxiliary aircraft carrier. Her flight deck measured 150 × 23 m (490 × 75 ft) and was equipped with two elevators. She had no island, catapults or arresting gear. On 31 July 1942, she was reclassified as an escort carrier and renamed Unyō (雲鷹, "Hawk tear the cloud"). (It must be noted that many experts dispute the lack of arresting gear on the Unyo and her sisters, and while photographic evidence is lacking, the Unyo during her service life operated aircraft which required arresting gear to land aboard a carrier.) The next January, Haddock badly clobbered her with three, and while she was hanging out in Truk to try to repair that damage, Halibut showed up a second time (though this attack was thwarted and she took no more damage). Finally, in September USS Barb finished her off with a final two hits. Pretty good survival record for a converted liner, all things considered. Too bad Zombie Napoleon was on the scene this time.

Captain's Log July 27th, 1942 We arrived at our new base of operations, Dutch Harbor. I must say, it is quite cold for the coast of The Netherlands, I was expecting a little nicer weather. Also more Nazi's. Ah well, no matter, I am sure we will find them out on the open ocean! As soon as we get there. But SOMEBODY forgot the hot fudge in England. So now we have to load up on Belgian Waffles to make it through this first patrol until we can ship in some more fudge. If I find out who forgot to load the fudge I am going to have to have them keelhauled.

More seriously, I think the Surcouf does not enjoy some of it's historical issues. Its very long time to submerge would be a huge disadvantage in the Pacific (due to be jumped by planes).

Since Berryjon wasn't having fun with the historical overviews, I decided to take a stab at it. I'm using a slightly different format, but hopefully you'll all enjoy it. ------------------ Silent War – the Submarine Conflict in the Pacific Theatre (Part 12) Week 23 Strategic overview: The third week of May in 1942 is widely conflated with its most momentous occasion – the Fall of Luzon to the Japanese. The Japanese invasion of the Philippines had been on-going for some time, and significant forces composed of American, Filipino, and Commonwealth units managed to hold the Japanese invasion force at bay for many months. Though numbers favoured the Allied Forces, training and discipline did not. By the middle of the month, withdrawal plans had been designed and signed-off on by COMSUBPAC. As Japanese forces began the final push towards Milan and the Allied stronghold on the nearby Bataan peninsula, the three remaining submarines operating out of Milan were ordered to rebase at Fremantle. The USS Gato played host to the remaining command elements of COMSUBPAC remaining in Manila, as well as those documents which were deemed irreplaceable. The USS Grampus and USS Sealion were instrumental in removing key commanders of the Allied forces in the Philippines campaign. Three other submarines (the Permit, Sargo, and the Grenadier) were diverted from their patrols to liberate strategic resources and personnel from Davaos on Mindanao, which had been spared the fierce fighting that raged on Luzon. In spite of the on-going drama in the Philippines, submarine action continued elsewhere in the Pacific. Four submarines arrived in-theatre, including the S-27 in the Aleutians (previously in overhaul on Mare Island), the S-45 in Fremantle (previously based in the Atlantic out of Bermuda), and the Gato-class Grouper and Flying Fish in Pearl Harbor (both newly built). sidebar posted:
While Allied forces were frantically busy in the Philippines, COMSUBPAC was largely quiet, with a notable exception. COMSUBPAC: In the north, only the Nautilus was on active patrol, and its sole attack of the week was foiled by a prematurely-detonating torpedo. Further south, the S-44 scored its third kill on a 3,000-tonne maru in the ilbert Islands. The Seadragon causes havoc in the Java Sea, sinking a 3,000 tonne maru and damaging a tanker with its deck gun. An intervening Kawanishi H8K forces the Seadragon to break off the attack and dive. The Pompano lost its periscope to a destroyer attack in the Carolines, and is forced to return to base. Also in the Carolines, the Gar attacked a maru but is fouled by her torpedoes; a second attack on a larger ship succeeded, and 5,000 tons of Japanese merchant shipping slipped to the bottom of the Pacific. In the Marianas, two different subs made attempts on Japanese warships with less than ideal results. The Tambor-class Gudgeon attempted a shot on the heavy cruiser Myōkō. Though the Gudgeon was able to escape unharmed, the calculations were bad and no damage was done to the Myōkō. Meanwhile, the Gato-class Greenling attempted an attack on the aircraft carrier Ryūkō. Interdicted by a destroyer before the shot could be taken, the Greenling was forced to flee and suffered minor damage from depth-charge attack. North of the Philippines, the Silversides manages to sink a 2,000 tonne maru before being attacked by an escorting destroyer. The sub survives with minor flooding. The Surcouf, commanded by the most esteemed Zombie Napoléon (Long May He Reign), scores its first kill. In interviews in 2009, Emperor Zombie Napoléon spoke on the importance of his first kill as commander of a submarine, and the speed with which his undead brain absorbed existing submarine doctrine. Finally, we come to the most important event of the week: in the Mariana Islands, the Trigger doggedly pursues a small Japanese naval task force. Lining up a shot on the heavy cruiser Aoba, the torpedo goes wide. Refusing to accept defeat, the commanding officer orders another attempt and fires a full spread of torpedoes. 3 of the four detonate against the hull, and the Aoba begins to list. The damage is fatal, and the ship sinks in less than an hour. The Dutch also probably did some stuff, but our translator has a nasty case of gonorrhoea and isn't returning our calls. From the personnel files: Though it took only a short time for beliefs and practices deemed "unusual" to take root in the submarine force, the fall of the Philippines seemed to accelerate their spread and greaten their scope. A Dutch commander, in a missive sent to allied commanders, speaks on the subject of the Dutch pact with Queen Mab. Though the exact details are unknown at time of writing (due largely to our Dutchman's Vegas vacation), Google Translate suggests it was most assuredly dark and foreboding. Rumours of devil-worship or worse by the crew of the S-45 circulate to this day, but cannot be confirmed due to the surely coincidental loss of that sub's official reports in an electrical fire which was miraculously confined to a single filing cabinet. Court martial documents for a supply officer in Dutch Harbor suggest he was involved in an illicit trading ring in which indebted members of the supply corps paid off their debts by supplying illegal materials to submarine crews inside of dud torpedoes. Week 24 Strategic overview: The Office of Naval intelligence was able to supply COMSUBPAC with intercepted Japanese war plans in the Aleutians, Solomons, and Carolines. Unfortunately, there were only two submarines on patrol in those areas this week, both in the Solomon Islands. However, a total of 30 allied subs were on patrol this week, a noticeable increase over week 23. COMSUBPAC: The Northern Theatre sees several submarines early in their patrol from Dutch Harbor, including the S-27 on her first war-time patrol. The skipper quite possibly sold his soul to succeed in sinking the 6,000 ton oil-tanker Teiyo Maru. In the Gilbert Islands, the Pike succeeds in sinking a 3,000 ton merchant vessel with 3 torpedoes. Japanese records suggest the ship had only a single survivor. In the Marshall Islands, the T-class Grayling and Gato-class Grouper both pick off 5,000 ton merchants from two different convoys. In the South China Sea, the Salmon attacks a large enemy convoy, destroying a 5,000 ton maru. Though a second attempt fails, Lieutenant NotThatSamBeckett becomes the second submarine ace of the Pacific War with his sub's fifth kill. The Dutch destroy a small, thousand-ton merchant. Further details are unavailable, as our translator drank three cups of coffee this morning and is currently sobbing and clutching his genitals in a bathroom stall on the third floor. From the personnel files: In contrast to many submarines of the Theatre, where strange cults and mystic rites were officially supported or joined by their skippers, the CO of the Tarpon took a radically different tack. Beginning at the end of May, Lieutenant DivineCoffeeBinge instituted what he termed the "Aggressive Sanity Protocol". Though historians are split on the value of the protocol to the Tarpon's war-time contributions, none can deny that not a single maintenance worker was driven mad by unseen entities or impossible colours in the depths of the Tarpon, which was a remarkably common event on other submarines in the Theatre. sidebar posted:

Word I got from a Navy tech who worked on them was the early model had a tendency to get the depth wrong when going from salt to fresh water... Or vice versa, can't remember. What I do remember is that the Collins would notice a change in bouyancy, and decide to correct its depth, in the fastest manner possible. So you'd be cruising at periscope depth and then suddenly be 50 degrees down bubble heading for the bottom. It did get fixed eventually, along with the other problems. Now its a very good quality SSK that's even sunk the Nimitz during wargames. But again, too few people willing to be locked up underwater for weeks at a time to have more than 2/3 of 6 manned and operational (best guess) EDIT- All SSK's are quiet as all hell, without needing the super fancy sound proofing that nucs require. That's why Kilo's are so popular, and the reason for 'Down Periscope'. Added bonus- you can 'bottom' a diesel boat and shut everything down, while a nuc boat can suffer problems doing either, like silt in the water intake valves that can be a bad thing for a reactor, and of course trying to power it down isn't a quick/easy thing to do. If at all, I don't know if they can while at sea. Paingod556 fucked around with this message at May 17, 2012 around 09:36 |

As I recall the Collins is pretty much the quietest boat in the ocean when it's manned and working because it goes batteries which are quieter than nuclear reactors. Facebook et al - causing everyone to not want to go underwater for lots of time. Which makes the Labour government's plan to build ANOTHER new class of sub a bit weirder still.
