Thermopyle posted:I had a really tough time as assault soloing tiny thumpers. I think I managed to do it once. An Assault can solo a tiny thumper, but it gets rough. Engineer is the way to go. I've been doing solo runs with a light thumper and I have it down to a science. Most of the science in involves sitting on my repair station and tanking everything that comes at me. You just have to stop the thumper before it hits 38%, because at that point the flying bugs show up and wreck everything. The tiny thumper gathers mineral 6x faster than a tiny thumper, so I clear out a mineral deposit in 15 minutes and keep it all for myself.

Any class can (and should!) solo the first part of a light thumper for good coralite harvesting if you aren't going to group. Tiny thumpers give awful returns and should only be used to get to light thumpers. Just send the thumper back early and you get to use it again. The spawns are static each time, so static that I probably get to about 25% using a scanhammer at this point, but local spawns are called in to attack your thumper so try to find a place without chosen or bug nests. The spawn pattern for light thumpers from memory: Bug group (1 sieger/stormer and 5-6 workers, sometimes 1 Icy bug) Bug group in same location Bug group in the same location Bug group in same location AND another Bug Group usually on the opposite side. maybe 2-3 more groups with a single explosive who usually wanders off but can sneak in and gently caress your thumper up. the zerg rush (maybe 20 workers spawns evenly through the area) the mostquito horde (5-6 small mostquitoes spread evenly around) and some toxic bugs (they hurt your thumper when they die, bait them away if you can) a couple bug groups, usually with more toxic bugs than normal bugs. the Terrorclaw 1-2 bug groups, with 2-3 explosive bugs mixed in. another zerg rush the explosive pack (7-8 explosive bugs who will probably wander off but will gently caress you later so kill them) at this point you should be at like 80% and it's bug group spawns until the end. the last spawn is 2 bug groups. I probably forgot some groups of bugs in there somewhere because it get kinda chaotic but those are the major spawns in consecutive order. Hitting a bug group with an explosive (grenade, plasma cannon, w/e) just as they spawn is best. The bugs tend to scatter pretty quickly after that, but you can group them back up as they chase you. If for some reason you decide to thump a 100% sifted earth spot, the spawns are different, typically lone workers and some of the weaker hissers. Maybe a big mosquito at the end? I don't recall. I recommend the island/peninsula to the northeast(Mushroom Island!), the forest around Bay of Bones and the beach and hills around Biosphere. Broken Shores and Trans-hub are lousy with Chosen, don't thump there. Hope this helps!

Unoriginal Name posted:thumper tips FWIW the devs said that they were going to be reworking this so that bringing back a light thumper early would not be better than a tiny at 100%. Not sure if this was scrapped or not, but it doesn't seem like a great design that a light at ~30% is better than a full tiny, considering the effort required. I've had great success (as in, we never drop below 90% durability) duoing lights with a friend, we run me Assault and him with Engineer(w/ a grenade launcher and homing bolt alt-fire). We're both over level 10 so your mileage may vary. Basically he drops his turret on one side, repair station on the other to tank incoming bugs, shield in front of the first major bug group spawns or at a chokepoint where bugs are spawning behind. I focus on blowing up everything as it spawns, he worries about fliers, bugs spawning opposite to where I currently am, and spawns while the terrorclaw is up.

I enjoy Sunken Harbor, but I'm a medic with a buddy who can recon pretty well so ymmv. Spotting a strong sniper's patterns and staying behind cover to sneak up on them is the best tactic I know of atm. They're still strong in close range but most classes can do enough damage to kill them. Unoriginal Name fucked around with this message at May 15, 2012 around 07:07 |

Well, got a beta invite this morning and just logged in to try this now. The intro series of quests are rather shoddy at the moment. During that quest where I was supposed to be blowing up rocks for resources, I guess I got unlucky and the first rock I picked to blow up was bugged. So I ended up wasting half my mines on that before I realized maybe something was wrong and I tried another one. And hey, what do you know, it only takes one mine to blow them up. But the quest only provides you with just enough of the mines to finish, so I ran out and had to go back and buy more... and they cost 50 each, which is a lot of money when you've been playing for 5 minutes. So I had to go grind for cash until I could buy enough items to finish a quest. That was the opposite of fun. Then later I get a quest to go do some thumping. I get a hammer and some waypoints. Great, go to waypoint, use hammer. Now I'm supposed to thump. OK, how do I do that? No idea. So I help like 5 people do their thumping in the hopes that it would give me credit for it. (Obviously I've been spoiled by the GW2 beta into thinking that all MMOs should reasonably share quest completion with everyone in range. Silly me!) Then I search my keybindings and forums trying to figure out how the hell to activate my own thumper. Oh, find an item in my inventory and right click it to rebind key 4 to it. Clearly I should have known that. And then I finally do get it activated, and all the people who had been around thumping previously have buggered off, and I am left alone with my piddly level 1 gear to fend off 500 hungry bugs. So my thumper dies at like 75% full. The quest tells me it only has to be 50% full to complete, but of course it doesn't tell me how to make it take off again whenever I want it to. I'm sure it's just a command that I have to drag out of a sub menu and then click while holding ctrl+alt+shift+F1 or some other completely intuitive thing. Also everything is quite laggy and the graphics, while good once loaded, do seem to take a long time to stream in properly, leaving the impression that everything is sort of a blurry pixelated mess, even though it's not if you stop and wait for a second. Now I know, most of this is due to it being pre-release and it will be cleaned up in time. But still, my long excitement over this game has taken a serious beating today. Edit: Also, is the only way to heal by getting enemy drops or running back to town and visiting like 3 different healing stations or waiting for one to respawn repeatedly? Surely that can't be right. Edit 2: OK, I do have to admit that swooping in out of nowhere to save someone's rear end as a medic is highly enjoyable. BobTheJanitor fucked around with this message at May 16, 2012 around 03:34 |

Its a beta. If you broke the first quest, why didn't you just make a new character? To send a thumper up, get close and press E. Its the same interaction used for everything. I don't have major streaming problems? Whats your computer specs? Its an FPS, its not a stand and click mmo. Dodge and you won't need many heals. Its a beta.

Yeah I did figure most of it out. I'm not completely dense, just crotchety. I'm just pointing out that it's pretty bad as far as introducing a new player to the game. Once you've finished the first thumper quest, is that it as far as quests go? No one else seems to want me to do anything. I ran around and found some more towns, and even got some NPC dialogue telling me to go to a station and link up to it, at which point someone told me he had a job for me, and then that was it. Nothing showed up. It's obvious that a lot of content isn't in yet. Most of the towns are completely empty. So I assume it's basically just intro quests and then you thump or go PVP?Wadjamaloo posted:Its an FPS, its not a stand and click mmo. Dodge and you won't need many heals. I'll resist the urge to give this the snarky response it's begging for. Instead I'll just say that whenever I do take some damage, assuming I'm a lonely friendless neckbeard playing off away from people and that I don't have a medic buddy nearby, having my only healing option be to kill more monsters and hope for a lucky drop or to run around searching for a healing station which will heal maybe 1/3 of my HP and then I have to wait for it to regenerate doesn't strike me as very good design. A rest ability, or even the often derided regenerating HP would be a lot more useful. At least the medic's healing wave will heal yourself as well, so I just took to playing with that frame for the time being.

BobTheJanitor, you sound like me when I first played. I kept running around hammering the poo poo out of the ground at point C, and didn't realize (because I am a dumbass) that the thumpers coming down weren't even mine! Long story short: It's Beta. You should send your story to the Devs, though. In fact, they insist on it in one of their beta videos. Strange to think that for all the "comprehensive" tutorials that I have bitched about sitting through, I get hosed by one which is lacking! I did, however, know how to send a thumper back early, but that is only because I sent someone elses back early for them.

I get why there would be no easy healing for PVP, but for the PVE world it seems like it could use some kind of standard RPG conventions adjusted to fit the setting. Easily obtainable cyber-bandages or future bread or nano healing potions or something. You're going to take damage eventually, and as a low level class it just means that you're eventually forced to go somewhere else to heal, and that just doesn't jive with PVE grinding. It's nice that there are options for higher level frames, but at low level it's not so great. Also what's up with that giant ship out in the bay almost at the limit of draw distance? Now that I've seen it I want to get there, although I'm sure it's probably impossible without falling into the instant death water.
