I've always named this game's main character Serge (from Chrono Cross), because I am also unoriginal.

This point in my current run on the DS version, I had the slime and slime knight.

Then I picked up a monster that starts as a glass cannon but the much higher raw attack power gave him a permanent spot in my rotation. Hoping we'll see it here.

When it comes to naming the Hero, I always name him Bill. Rarely, like my most recent replay of DQVIII, I name him William.

I even named IV's female hero Bill.

This is what I end up doing, but with Bob. This ends up killing the drama whenever an RPG refers to your character in some sort of epic nature, because Bob is the most mundane name and generic in existence.

OH, THE LEGENDARY HERO BOB WILL SAVE US I AM CERTAIN
Sir Bob, are you ready to proceed?

This partially for comedy, and partially because I really don't resonate with silent protagonists enough to care what their named.

That one is it, but this one is much more completed, and what I was thinking of when I mentioned it.

And yeah, that's basically the reason I use the name "Bill". It just seems mundane but still sounds like it could fit in a DQ-esque world.

Well great. After seeing that I'm now sad that there isn't an actual DQ5 Anime. Though I have to admit Pankraz as Kamina fits perfectly.

And to stay on the current topic, I'm yet another one of those unoriginal bastards that just uses their own name for RPGs. Though I have to admit, using a name like Bill DOES make for some interesting humor.

You know, the biggest thing making this stand out from most jRPGs I've seen is how *likeable* the characters have been so far. Some of that is just the writing we're getting for Simon, sure, but Henry maturing and growing up, Papas being proud of his son, the cool little adventures as a kid, and now the NPC nuns and such coming off as decent people from time to time feels really unusual to me, and is really making this a lot more enjoyable.

I am reminded of how Final Fantasy X approached the family dynamic.

They captured Tidus' absent-father-issues rather well, especially with his surrogate father figure Auron. Who filled that role very well.

Some people mentioned the DS remake's advantages. There's a MASSIVE improvement in regards to Pancraz's story, but that'll have to be discussed far later. Suffice to say that DQ has always inexplicably suffered from incredibly weak villains whose roles are never expanded to what they should be.

Chapter 11: Return to Reinhart

: Hey, Henry. Welcome home.

: Listen up... until we find out what's going on, I don't want anyone to find out who I really am... Just for now, I'm only a traveler, okay? Alright... Let's go then...

: Hello again, door. You vexed me as a child, you vex me now, but your time is coming...

: So long as you fight, you get tons of money and all you want to eat!
: This nation's Queen is really something. It won't be long until this land conquers all the world. Wa ha ha ha!
: There is nothing more enjoyable to me than war. Ahh, the sweet sounds of slaughter and the bitter cries of death... Hee hee hee hee...
: God... what kind of horrible person recruits literal monsters?
: Hey!

: quiver. You know what I mean? Oh, wait! Please don't tell any of these men that I said such a thing!

: But, God, to this day I cannot erase from my mind that atrocity... Though it was an order from the Empress, how could we have destroyed such a defenseless village?

: Hunh. Well, we were told to leave. Invasion over!
: Smartass.

: castle... Wait a minute! There used to be a secret passage around here. Maybe we can get into the castle through that... Let's see... where was that thing...

: Well, there's that door that for some reason we can't see even though we're looking right at it. Is that what you mean?

: No, no. Oh, wait, I remember. Let's grab that boat.

: It's this passage under the drawbridge that we can't see even though we're looking right at it!

: What is this place? It looks like an altar or something.
: I dunno, my ancestors were into some weird stuff, I guess. Now take a look around.

: Phew! Stinks like monsters down here. What the hell do you guys keep in your basement?

: Ugh, I used to hide down here and play when I was little! I can't believe my stepmother is just letting monsters run around down here.

: I don't know if this door even has a key. C'mon, we can just go around it.

: Hmm... I don't remember which way to go from here...
: Wait, I sense something... Something lootable.

: ... Simon, you're not just helping me out so you can look all the castle's valuables, are you?
: ... ... no? This junk isn't that valuable, anyway.
: ... In any case, the other way leads to the castle dungeon, I think.

: I've been here for too long now... and my ears and eyes no longer serve me as well as they once did... but I can tell you this simple truth! The one who got rid of Prince Henry was none other than the former Queen, and our present Empress!
: Yeah, I kind of already knew that.
: And yet she pretended to be torn apart by his disappearance and even blamed the whole ordeal on Papas! Even destroyed his village... Never have I met such a vile and repulsive woman... But soon... she'll get hers!
: It can't come too soon, as far as I'm concerned.

Tornado is the next level up from Gale. About twice as much damage for twice as much mana.

At the other end of the dungeon, Henry is surprised by an unexpected voice from the past...

: No way... It can't be!
: I am this country's Queen... Now hurry up and get me out of here!!!
: What the...? The Empress is upstairs ruining the country. Who the hell are you?
: What? You dare say you do not believe that I am an Empress? Oh! How irritating! Oh yes, it was I, who ten years ago had that brat Henry kidnapped and sent to his grave!
: ...
: But it was all for my dear son. All to make Dale the King! Part of being a parent, I suppose...
: Lady, you don't know the first thing about being a parent.
: But now, I truly do regret doing such a thing... So please... do not leave me here... *sob*
: You know what... I actually believe you. That's why you can just stay there and rot for a while.
: Besides, I haven't figured out the trick to ripping jail doors off their hinges yet.

: There, now we don't have to walk past that noxious woman if we have to come and go through here again. The main floor should be right up there.

: Don't see any guards around. Let's go find out just what the hell is going on.

: This country's King is Lord Dale. But he is merely a puppet for the Empress. She holds the true power. So it would be best if you did not ever go up againsther. Else, you may find your head lying by your feet...

: But the moment he became King, she became a totally different person, almost overnight... Now, it seems as though she considers King Dale to be a nuisance to her ambitions. I wonder... what could have happened?

: I am studying the evolution of life. People, living things, how did they come to be as they are now? Can they grow stronger...? I have heard that there was once a way to manipulate such evolution... perhaps it was just an act of God.
: I heard that last time someone tried to manipulate evolution, it pissed some woman off so badly that she rounded up a small army and beat the poo poo out of him.

: True, it is an order from the Empress, but how much longer can something this heinous continue with such impunity?

At long last, Simon and Henry come to the throne room. Dale is there, all grown up and kind of looking like he could be the protagonist of his own RPG. The Empress, however, is nowhere to be found.

: Come back tomorrow.
: Welp, invasion over.
: You already made that joke. Move over, old man, we're not leaving.

: You heard the Chancellor, did you not? We do not feel up to speaking with anyone today. Be gone from our sight.

: Very true, my liege, but remember this... goons always listen to their masters...
Yeah, goons. Listen to your masters!
: ...!! That means... You are...!! Chancellor!! Leave us! I must be alone with these travelers!
The Chancellor goes and has a smoke break on the balcony or something, giving about two shits for proper security.
: Henry! My dear brother! You're alive!
: Yeah... sorry for my absence 'til now... But first off...
: What? Mother's in the dungeon?! Then who the hell is upstairs?
: Shhhhhhh! Not so loud, Dale!
: Now that I think of it, things were going a bit odd... I don't remember when, but I read in some book about a magical mirror... It was on the book shelf of the castle's storage room... Here, take this key with you... it should come in handy...
: Key? DIBS!

: Be careful...

: Ummm. Yes?
: Don't lie to me! I would have told if something like you had been called to her.
: There is definately something very strange going on here...

: Woah, calm down! You're lapsing into gibberish!
: Oh well, so long as the Empress lives, this country will be peaceful.
: The Empress that's declaring war on the entire world? I don't think you know how peace works, dumbass.

: Ha ha ha! It's Simon's time! ... OWOWOWOWOWOW!
That striped floor is a damage zone. It can't kill you, but it'll drain you down to 1 hp pretty damned fast. Especially if you stomp around trying to catch a screenshot of the pixellation effect when it damages you.

: WORTH IT.
: Sure, Simon, just help yourself to the royal treasury.
: Sorry, can't hear you over the sound of some actually decent loot for once!

: Another one! ... And it vanished, too. I hope the Medal King appreciates all these things I'm somehow sending to him. Whoever he is.

: "Day * Month * Year" I don't think whoever wrote this was 100% clear on the diary concept. "Today I traveled through the palace's warp gate to a Southern land. In that land stands a tower. And in that tower is said to exist a mirror that reflects the truth of all things. But the door to such a tower would not open itself to me. Only the nunnery possesses the key..."
: Warp gate? I didn't know we had a warp gate. I didn't even know there IS such a thing!

: Well, here it is. Let's give it a try!

Next time: Where did we go?

There is actually a theory that DQ 4 was actually chronologically the last story in the Zenithian trilogy. (DQ 4-6) Would you guys mind if I shared it or would you prefer I keep it to myself until someone does a DQ 6 playthrough? It's kind of a spoilery theory.

I don't personally plan on doing DQ6, so it's no skin off my nose.
So long as you keep from spoiling stuff I haven't gotten to in this game, of course. Otherwise, I'm all for thread content that doesn't involve me doing any work.

Metalix

Alright, I'll try to keep the spoilery bits to a minimum. If I say too much just tell me and I'll edit it out.

First off, it stands to note that this theory only really works with the DS versions of the games. Basically, the theory goes that, just like with the first three games, the Zeninthian trilogy is a story being told backwards. The strongest bit of evidence for this comes from the ending to DQ6. In said ending we witness the birth of one of the only recurring characters in the trilogy.

So what does this mean if it's true? Well it means a lot of things actually. For one, it means that everything that goes wrong for Simon in THIS game can be traced back to a power vacuum caused by the death of the final boss in DQ6 being filled by a new force. This also adds a few new themes of evil's redemption with the DS version of DQ4 considering you can stop Psaro from becoming the new king of the underworld and then stop the guy about to take over before he can get a real power base formed.

I dunno. I just think this is kind of an interesting theory here.

Perfect Potato

Yes, the DS versions of the games, where in V Desmond's talk about evolution (which is already more or less a reference to IV) is instead a talk about "Psarology" or whatever, really holds this theory together.

A little late to the party here, but with this version of the game, you can recruit 2 slime knights. They have two different names, same level progression and abilities. It's another way you can trivialize the entire second chapter of the game, especially if you have bad luck recruiting some of the various monster later on.

You can recruit 3 of any monster in the DS version. The chances just go drastically down after the first recruitment.

I think Slime Knights go from 1/4 -> 1/64 -> 1/64 chance of recruitment. Metal Slimes start at 1/256.

Slimes are interesting because the 3rd is actually easier to get than the second with 1/2 -> 1/32 -> 1/16.

The most common fan interpretation of events is 6 4 5.

The 4 to 5 connection we just saw in the LP with the scholar referencing Psaro's evolution evils.

6 ends with the Zenithia castle being established in the sky, which suggests it's before 4.

That would parallel the original trilogy, which went 3 1 2. On the other hand, the Zenithian trilogy is a lot more loosely connected than the Erdrick/Loto trilogy. I suspect that 4, 5, and 6 aren't really set in the same world at all, and the references to other games are more for cool factor than for continuity.

That would certainly explain what Estark is doing in the DS version of DQ5. Though if the pattern is 6, 5, and 4 like the theory I posted thinks he could just be chilling out until someone wipes out the final boss in 5.

The director himself said the second trilogy was never really intended, so the links are just there for the fans more than any grand storyline. That being said, the links are indeed there. 5 definitely comes after 4.

Nope, those were so specifically NOT connected I think the director deliberately went out of his way to make sure there was no possibility of any fans trying to link them.

It was a reference to DQ3, actually. The Godbird Empyrea identifies herself as Ramia at the very end of DQ8. Ramia was the name of the bird you hatched in DQ3. DQ8 states that she can travel between dimensions, so it is likely the same being in both games.

After the first three, the games don't take place in the same world, but I think of it as a sort of inter-connected multiverse.

There's a blatant worldmap reference showing how 5 comes after 4, but it'd be spoilers to talk about it so we'll have to wait until later.

Chapter 12: The truth revealed

: Oog, I feel seasick. Where did that warp gate send us, anyway? Halfway across the world, I imagine.
: Hmm. Let's head north a bit, I think I see something that way...

: You have got to be kidding me...

: THIS is the nunnery that diary mentioned? We could have walked here! What's the point of even having a warp gate?
: Well, it did save us a poorly defined amount of plot time. I'm totally fine with the occasional shortcut. Let's ask around, see if anyone knows about that key. man I love keys

: Please, come in come in! Maria will be so happy to see you again!

: I'm sorry to hear that, but I don't see
: But you have kind eyes, so I believe you to be a good man.
: ... Sorry, lady, I'm not going to be your rebound.

: Yes!
: Down, boy.
: But all she does is sit and pray... she seems so lonely...
: Well, let's go cheer her up!

: For I prayed that I might meet you and Lord Henry once more... *blush*
: Umm... so... are you doing OK here?
: Oh yes, I am very well thank you. Everyone here is so kind to me...

: What? That's not a yes or no question! ... Anyway, there's a tower to the south, and supposedly the key to get in is around here somewhere.
: What?
: What?
: What?
: What?
: shut up. You wish to enter the Southern tower where the sacred mirror is kept? Hmm... that is a dilemma... You see, only a maiden of God can open the gate to that tower.
: Gee, where could we ever find one of those in this nunnery?
: You'd be surprised. Also shut up. But as you know, with all the monsters inside and out, no woman would dare to enter such...
: Please! Let me go!
: Maria...!
: These people have been nothing but kind to me... And I owe them everything... And... I want to know... I need to know if I have the power to open the tower door, so please...
: ... Very well... If you are so adamant about it, I cannot stop you... Simon... Please, take Maria with you...
: I'll try my best to be useful and not get in your way...
: Do you know how to fight at all?
: Nope! Shall we...?

: It is said that God created such tower to test the will and hearts of men. He who believes only in what he sees before him is blinded by his own pride, and thus, cannot truly be blessed by God. Only he who has the courage to take the first step can receive the blessing of God. Please... be careful...

That's about it for the nunnery, so it's back to the south, past the warp gate exit.

The monsters here were a bit too tough the first time we were in the neighborhood, but they're cake now. Or pie, maybe. Mmm, evil apple pie.

This is the Southern Tower, which happens to be pretty much exactly on the equator. I love jrpg geography!

: Yep, locked. What a surprise.

: And that's my job done. You guys mind if I follow you around for a while? I like watching you work.

: Well, this room is pretty. I wonder who takes care of these flowers?

There's a lot of ledges and gaps in the Southern Tower, and most of them dump you back into this central room when you fall down. That said, there are no real puzzles or anything here, not even secret areas that you have to fall into. Just make your way up and collect loot.

: Loot!

Here's one of those ledges I mentioned. It's no problem, so long as you keep your finger off the fast-forward button.

A new batch of monsters in here. The Evil Plant can change your tactics, which is a nice little segue to let me talk about tactics! In DQV, you can select from 6 tactics options: Offensive, Normal, Save MP, Use No MP, Defensive, and Manual. #6 there is a godsend after Dragon Warrior IV; no matter how good the AI is sometimes direct control is just better. On the other hand, letting the AI control things has some minor advantage. The AI doesn't decide on an action until the character's turn actually comes up, so they might heal a wound that didn't exist when the round started. I actually usually leave the AI on when I'm just walking around, and switch back to manual for boss fights.

As one last note, monsters don't always do what you say. Even in manual mode, if a monster's intelligence isn't at least 20 it'll often do something at random anyway. I'm not sure if being a dumbass makes it override a non-manual AI setting or not.

: More loot!

: This is a bit ominous. I think we're almost there.

: ... what.
: Remember what the sister said back at the nunnery? Only with a leap from the lion's head

: Right, that was it. Leap of faith, Simon!

: Hunh, this absolute nothing is a lot more stable than it looks! C'mon, follow me, it's safe somehow.

: Is Ra the name of God?
: Not as far as I know.
: But this mirror is God's blessing on us?
: Sometimes God's blessing takes the form of a callback, that's all.
: ... Well, we're done here. Want to head back to the Nunnery?
: I wouldn't mind staying with you a little longer, if you'll let me.
: Fine with me!

: Are you sure you don't want to walk back, Henry? I mean it's just a few hundred miles north or so! We've walked it before!
: No! Jeez! I'm sorry I insulted the warp gate, OK? Let's hurry this up.

Back in Reinhart, the party rushes to the throne room, but Dale isn't there!

: The King has brought out an Empress from God knows where... And all a sudden, instead of one Empress, there were two! Seriously, how many do we need?

: We managed somehow to tear the two apart, but now, not even the King knows which one is which.
: Oh, for the love of...

: I tried not to depend on my elder brother and do something on my own and look what happens... Oh, it seems everything I do is jinxed!
: It's not your fault. Your mother's just terrible.

: Guards, take this foul wench away and lock her up!

: Well, you're slightly less terrible than the other one. I'm not sure if that makes you the real one or the fake one.

Simon holds up the mirror to each of the Empresses. The one on the right reflects normally, but the one on the left...

Boss time! The imposter summons trick bags and skeletons to help her out, but Simon has a boomerang, and Henry has Bang, so the extra monsters are barely relevant.

: If you hadn't killed me... Reinhart's King... could have been the King of the world... Aarrggh!
: I never wanted to be King of the world!

Such rumors quickly spread through the Kingdom... And night turned to day...

: I thank you from the bottom of my heart... had you not done what you did... this country... My God... I am a failure as King, am I not?
: How should I know? I've literally lived in a cave most of my life, I don't know what kings are supposed to do!
: So, Simon, help me convince Henry. Help me convince him to become King...
: Sure, here goes. Hey, Henry. Be King already.

: But Henry...
: Goons are supposed to listen to their masters, remember? I mean, I plan on helping you rule and stuff, but I am not King..!

: What, you're going to just live here in luxury with a rewarding job to do instead of wandering aimlessly around the world with me?
: We've been through a lot... but I've got stay here now... Take care, Simon... thanks for everything...
: It's cool, you're doing the right thing. Going to miss you though, bro.

: I must return to the nunnery, so I must make my goodbyes now.
: Mmm hmm. I don't think you're actually in much of a hurry to leave the castle.
: I have no idea what you mean. Simon, on your quest to find your mother and the Legendary Hero... I wish you all the luck.
: Now that the country's back to normal, ships should be able to come back into the harbor of Vista. You'll probably be able to set out on a new journey from there... Oh yeah! All that equipment you bought for me? I sent them to the Depository in Oracleberry. I'd offer you more, but you already cleaned out the castle vault. I hope that you find the Legendary Hero soon. Take care, Simon.
: Simon... Thank you so very much. With my brother, I plan on helping to make this country a place where everyone can live peacefully.

: This all happened because of my blind ambition... From now on I will support my King with all my heart selflessly, so please do not worry.
: If it were up to me, you'd still be rotting in a cell. If you step out of line, lady, I'm coming back for you.
: With both brothers now presiding over a peaceful throne, no doubt the lands will be peaceful as well.

: Well, I'd better be going, then...
: Simon, wait...
: Hunh? What is it?
: ... One more for the road?

: Come back safe, man.

Now that the imposter Empress has been ousted and some decent leadership put in place, the populace of Reinhart begin rejoicing.

: To be able to say that without cringing... Makes me so happy...

: I was told that there, the Legendary Armor exists, but I didn't find one trace of it.
: It's still a clue, anyway. I'll take whatever I can get.

: Our land is finally at peace!

: Is that your sister in the bunny ears?
: Uh huh! She says that she's getting lots of work now that everyone's celebrating!
: ... I guess it beats begging...

: I'm leaving Henry in your hands, Reinhart. Take good care of him for me. Farewell!

Unfortunately, there's no gratuitous warp gate back to the port, so this time Simon really does have to walk.

: All because I watched the currents of this river and wished it so. Fa fa fa.
: Right. What a productive way to spend 10 years of your life.

Finally, Simon returns to Vista Harbor, where this story began.

: Hurry and get on else you'll be left behind!

: Somehow I expected a more specific destination...

: Seems you're the last passenger...

And so Simon boards a ship with no particular destination in mind, trusting to fate and the vague rumors of the Legendary Armor to guide him.

Next time: Some place in the West!

Don't like it? well...

And thus Henry's story arc comes to an end. Nicely enough, after plot advances you can go back and check up on how he's doing.

Simon's going to be alone with his monsters for a while now though. In fact, there's quite a large segment of the game with no other human party members.

Someone needs a brohug

Since that's the case, maybe the more important monsters should be giving Simon their input from time to time, then?

At any rate, I thought that final brofist moment was the best part of the update. Still liking this!

Adds to his 'Rugged Wanderer' thing he has going on.

"Simon, the Shepherd of Slimes" has a nice ring to it.

Not to derail the thread, but what was poor about DQM's translation? Sure it wasn't plot heavy, but I don't remember it being that bad except for a few specific cases.

Maybe my choice of words was too harsh, I meant no disrespect for the goon who did the translation.

To clarify, since the SNES Dragon Quests hadn't been done yet, the Monsters translation team had no references or previous works to build off of, meaning that the majority of the in-jokes and DQ references (which is basically what Monsters is) were lost. You could play Monsters and have zero idea you're seeing DQ6's characters when they were younger. Which is a bit of a tragedy, really (I respect when the writers put details in just for the fans).

It's similar to how Final Fantasy Adventure is a prequel to Secret of Mana. So many references lost.

Fun fact, those Apple monsters? They can join up with you. They're pretty freaking boss too. Good damage, and an interesting selection of spells.

Not too shabby for sentient fruit.
