Yamada-kun! I meant Yamada-kun. I'm Californian.

And besides, I'm an editor, not a translator because I don't speak Japanese!

I thought this chapter was oddly readable. I've certainly read less coherent translations. Any other April Fool's manga translations out?

It's common slang in Hawaii so basically, yeah. The meaning has to almost always be inferred from context.

4 new chapters have come out in the last week or so.

Because of you guys, though, I went and read all of Yankee-kun (up to what's been translated at least) and god drat was that excellent. Thanks for talking about how much better it was than Yamada throughout the thread because you were right. I still like Yamada though.

I've stopped reading Yamada, because after giving it a good run and putting up with the PANTSU I realized that I couldn't really be arsed to care about any of the characters. It's like Yankee-kun without any of the earnestness and charm and 100% more pandering. Is there anything particularly noteworthy in the latest 4 chapters that might tempt me back?

I really wish I could like it, out of loyalty to Miki Yoshikawa, but it just feels hollow.

The student council president's secretary is a former witch whose power was taken by Tamaki, the "witch killer" that was just introduced. She's also a sadist. Also Yamada finally admits to Miyamura that he's in love with Shiraishi at the end of the latest one and Miyamura seems to have been under the impression Yamada actually had the hots for him.

And yeah I see where you're coming from with the characters. If I had read Yankee-kun first I probably wouldn't care at all about anyone in Yamada but I found this first so while I like the Monshiro crew a lot more at this point, I do still have some attachment to these characters. Miyamura is great and I won't hear a word against him.

I get what people are saying about Yamada feeling 'less'. But I'm the kind of person who sticks with a series for the art as much as the plot. Yoshikawa's goofy faces will keep me coming back so in it for the long haul here.

I haven't read YK&MC yet (I should) so that probably helps here, but I really like this. It has fun comedic senses and I really like the whole club and Yamada. He almost reminds me of Rondo from pretty face in how he always just acts without thinking and I just love the energy. I keep forgetting to check up on the series, but when I do I always enjoy the read.

I think the problem is that there are way too many characters. Most of the witches just... show up and then disappear when their arc is over and the one that's stuck around regularly is a pretty annoying character.

Yamada, Miyamura and Itou are all entertaining and Shiraishi's easily one of the more likable "shonen main girl" types I've seen. But outside of them it just gets too bogged down in extraneous filler characters. If it was just the four of them, Odagiri and Ushio as rivals, and the President with his own agenda it'd be a lot more bearable due to having more focus instead of constantly introducing new charactes who do nothing (basically half of the witches, Tempura dude) which has the side effect of pushing other characters (Miyamura, Itou, Shiraishi) into the background. I mean it'd still have problems with fanservice and such but around the summer vacation arc was about where the series was the most enjoyable and if it had just stuck to those characters and developed them it'd be a lot better off.

I just find the series entertaining. I can't really point to why, I just do. Its probably because unlike a lot of series, I don't find either of the main characters (Yamada or Shiraishi) annoying.

Who fucking cares?

I sped through this, and I never finished MC&YK. I dunno why, I guess it just seemed less routine for a high school club manga. Maybe it's because the two main characters are more different in some ways, rather than them both being yankees of a sort.

I dunno about you but I'm still loving Yamada and the Seven Witches. Wacky hijincks is all I ask from it and it's delivering in spades (although I'd still be pleased if Yankee-kun would be finished some day).

I don't think it's a bad series or anything because it can still be very entertaining when it's on. It just has a few problems ("gotta catch 'em all" stuff with the witches, cast that's way too big, the fanservice can get groan-inducing) that drag it down. It's a series that, given the general premise, could've been a LOT worse.

I like this series because something is always happening. It's not always big stakes or flashy, but there's a constant sense of forward plot motion. They have an objective, they know what to do (or they're working on figuring that out) and the moment that's done, they're right on to the next one. Conflict, development, resolution, right on to the next conflict, and the author keeps arcs short. It's active enough that I don't care about the cast size -- they don't get a spotlight if they're not relevant to the plot at hand. If you aren't needed, then say your line and get the gently caress out of the way, Yamada's got poo poo to do!

There's not much dead air here, and it's refreshing to see. Fits the protagonist pretty well, too. Should every series be this driven? No, not necessarily, but it works here.

Not gonna wear that.

A couple new chapters are out, 58 and 59, introducing yet another character, and revealing a few things about the last witch. Sounds like it might be some kind of straight-up mind control? Since all the powers are "mind tricks" to some extent, I suppose that's the one really missing from the list.
