Those years between learning their first kid wasn't an Airbender and Tenzin's bending being discovered must have been a really difficult time for Aang and Katara, with the whole Air Nomad culture and the future of the Avatar cycle hanging on a thread, depending entirely on chance.

I feel a bit bad for Bumi, the non-bending kid. What do you think that would be like, growing up in a family like that and being unable to bend? It would be like growing up with a math disability in a family of PhD mathematicians.

The bit about bullying is an interesting addition, since it's rarely called that outside of a school environment/relationship. Could Tezin's kids be sent to elementary school? I know this is epililectic tree territory here, but I could totally see that happening.

You'd probably have them hanging around along with the Kyoshi warriors, Mai and Ty Lee showing you don't have to be able to bend to be a badass.

I haven't seen it mentioned in this thread, but what's going to be the best way to get this? I don't have cable, so that's obviously out. It looks like it's up on iTunes, Amazon, and Xbox Live. 30 bucks for the season on iTunes, no idea for Amazon, and 2400 points (~$24?) on Live. Obviously then Live seems like the best for cost, but which of those three is most likely to get new episodes the quickest? Anybody know? If anyone has any ideas on how much Amazon might charge too, that'd be great. I could toss Korra on my Fire for on-the-go bending.

Are there any really good extras on the US DVDs of Avatar? Might import if they're good enough to be worth it, the UK ones are just the barebones book collections but they're pretty cheap right now it seems.

If that was the case then the Avatar wouldn't be necessary (or at least not so critical). I think it was made pretty clear at several points in the original cartoon that if Aang didn't triumph the world would be irrevocably damaged.

Some Nickelodeon executives were worried, says Konietzko, about backing an animated action show with a female lead character. Conventional TV wisdom has it that girls will watch shows about boys, but boys won't watch shows about girls. During test screenings, though, boys said they didn't care that Korra was a girl. They just said she was awesome. The lead character may be female, but the show is very masculine in design. It's all about conflict and fulfilling ambition. Even the lead character herself has macho tendencies. She's so aggressive that her male mentors actually struggle to teach her indirection and restraint.

The reason boys don't like girl characters isn't because they don't like girls, it's because 99% of girl characters in kids shows have absolutely no personality beyond "IS A GIRL".

Word. There's this weird idea among writers and executives that FEMALE CHARACTERS are completely different than 'regular characters.'

Edit: It took me rereading that to realise that the original show already set that precedent, so I'm going to eat those words and instead just hope that the creators set the bar higher this time and don't set up a tough situation just so that they can spend most of the show ignoring it and then magically solving it. tsob fucked around with this message at Apr 14, 2012 around 00:49 |

The relationship isnt bad when you remember the ages of the participants. Of course the real problem is that Aang and Katara weren't made a year older at least from the beginning if they were going to do a romance subplot, but what're you gonna do.

Like Ty Lee and Suki, she's a non-bender who manages to hold her own (and then some) against benders. She just never has any really poignant or meaningful moments until the Boiling Rock, when the show is really almost over. You get these little hints, like when Azula denied the trade of King Bumi to get her baby brother back and Mai gave her an evil side-eye, but overall she was mostly just "the sullen teenage girl who doesn't want to do anything" so she didn't get much character, which was kind of pitifully explained away by my parents' expectations. By the time she throws herself under the bus to save Zuko, you don't even really care. She's basically just a plot device at that point, same as the Yu Yan archers were, and they promptly disappeared in Season 1 after the single episode in which they were needed. I really hope they'll actually do something interesting with her in The Promise.
