Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night in a sweat as unknown to me, in my sleep I have managed to tune my ear to the frequency of despair, and crossreference by the longitude and latitude of a heart in agony.
SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT ONE MORE DAY ALREADY!

After three years of waiting, the next chapter in this universally beloved saga is upon us.

Hmm... maybe I should back up a bit...

In 2002, two friends, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, set out to create a groundbreaking animated epic. The result was Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The world in Avatar is divided into four nations (Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, Air Nomads), each having very distinct cultures and customs. In each of these nations, there are people called “benders”, who are capable of manipulating their nations respective element (Water, Earth, Fire, Air). Much more than a tool for combat, bending is an extremely spiritual art that is heavily ingrained into the culture and lifestyle of all four nations. Keeping balance between these four nations is the Avatar, the spirit of the planet incarnate in human form. Capable of bending all four elements, as well as having access to unbelievable cosmic power in a special state known as The Avatar State (which comes with some very serious drawbacks), the Avatar reincarnates into the next nation in the cycle when he or she dies.

Avatar tells the story of Aang, a twelve year old Air Nomad, and the newest Avatar. He is awaken from a hundred years of cryogenic stasis by two teenaged Water Tribe siblings, Katara and Sokka, and finds that the peaceful world he once knew has been ravaged by 100 years of war, waged by the Fire Nation in a quest for world domination. Moreover, he discovers that he is the last of his people, with all the other Air Nomads having been killed by the Fire Nation in a global genocide that began the War. With the help of Katara and Sokka, Aang sets out to fulfill his role as the Avatar by mastering the other three elements in order to defeat the Fire Lord, in a quest that takes him all over the world, all while being pursued by the Fire Nation. And that’s only scratching the surface of the first three episodes.

Premiering in 2005 on Nickelodeon, Avatar took a while to find its footing, but by the end of the first season it had gained a huge fanbase of children and adults alike for its deep characters, gripping storyline, fantastical setting that heavily drew from multiple Eastern cultures, beautiful animation, wonderful action, and all-around spirit. In 2008, shortly after the third season came to an end with a series finale that received universal praise from fans and critics alike, Avatar won a Peabody Award for "unusually complex characters and healthy respect for the consequences of warfare".

Now, with Mike and Bryan once more at the helm, The Legend of Korra, a brand new story set 70 years after the events of the original series, is finally about to begin.

Note: If you have not watched Avatar: The Last Airbender yet, please stop reading here, because, as Korra is a sequel series, spoilers for the end of Avatar are incoming, and not just "The good guys win." The series is available on Netflix Instant Watch. You won’t regret it.

(Thanks, nfreakct!)

"Earth. Fire. Air. Water. When I was a boy, my father, Avatar Aang, told me the story of how he and his friends heroically ended the Hundred Year War. Avatar Aang and Fire Lord Zuko transformed the Fire Nation colonies into the United Republic of Nations, a society where benders and non-benders from all over the world, could live and thrive together in peace and harmony. They named the capital of this great land, Republic City. Avatar Aang accomplished many remarkable things in his life. But sadly, his time in this world came to an end. And like the cycle of the seasons, the cycle of the Avatar, began anew." -Tenzin, providing the opening narration, and making this a lot easier for me.

Characters

Korra

Korra is the new Avatar, 17 years old, native to the Southern Water Tribe, and best friends with an adorable and kick-rear end Polar Bear-Dog named Naga. Athletic, confident, hotheaded, headstrong, and ripped as hell, Korra is the polar opposite of Aang. A bending prodigy by even Avatar standards, she has easily mastered Waterbending, Earthbending, and Firebending. Unfortunately, she's hit a block, as her personality and complete dismissal of the spiritual aspect of bending has made her completely incapable of Airbending. Fortunately, there's someone who can help her with that.

Tenzin

The youngest, and only Airbender, of Aang and Katara's three children, Tenzin is the only Airbending master in the entire world, as well as a Councilman for Republic City. He has taken on the responsibility of teaching Airbending to his father's reincarnation. He has the White Lotus keeping an eye on her, but to very limited effect. Calm, serious, and traditional in his spirituality, he conflicts with Korra, but recognizes that just as he has things to teach her, she has things to teach him. Together, with his wife, Pema (a kind and gentle non-bender), he has three children, all of whom are Airbenders. Jinora, the oldest, is a quiet and disciplined girl, but has a hint of a meddlesome side. Ikki, on the other hand, is excitable and inquistive, but she still has a mature side, which comes out when her father is distressed. Meelo, the youngest, and the only boy, is... well...hardcore.

Mako and Bolin

These two brothers, born of an inter-bender family and having grown up on the streets, are rapidly making a name for themselves in Pro-Bending, a popular sport that has surprisingly complicated rules. Mako, the older of the two, is a Firebender, and is stoic and brooding, clearly carrying some emotional baggage. Bolin, on the other hand, is an Earthbender, and is much more aloof and cheerful than his brother, a bit of a doof but still absolutely competent and reliable. They keep a roof over their heads by doing odd jobs for Toza an awesome grumpy old guy who manages the arena, and lets them stay in the attic. But a chance meeting with Korra shows that destiny has bigger things in store for the two brothers.

Lin Bei Fong

Toph's daughter (father unknown), a Metalbender, and the Chief of Police in Republic City, Lin takes her position of authority very seriously. She has no time for anyone's bullshit, and sees the Avatar's arrival in Republic City as a potential tipping point for the city, which is already experiencing serious turmoil, with bender gangs, homelessness, and calls for revolution (more on that in a minute) all growing by the day. The police force she commands is composed entirely of Metalbenders, who use spools of cable on their backs to tie up criminals and traverse the city like Spider-Man when pursuing criminals. They patrol the sprawling metropolis via airships. They too will not take any bullshit.

Amon

He is the mysterious leader of The Equalists, a group that demands an end to the social inequality perpetuated in Republic City by the Bending Elite. The full arguments of the group are unknown, and Amon may have ulterior motives, but it's clear that The Equalists are not cut-and-dry evil. The Equalists are also capable of chi-blocking like Ty Lee, and Amon may be capable of something more permanent. His right-hand man, known only as The Lieutenant, is armed with two electrified kali sticks (learn more here), and is extremely skilled with them.

- Please do not talk about Shyamalan.

You know, considering how much Korra seems to be a brute-force bender, the first time she goes all Avatar State is probably going to be pretty goddamn scary for everyone involved. I have to imagine she hasn't achieved it yet since she's a total dud on the spiritual side of bending, which is pretty much what the Avatar State is all about.
