New theory. I'm re-watching the original series and had just finished the episode with the fortune-teller today. The fortune-teller says that Katara will have her third grandchild and right after pass away peacefully in her sleep. Meelo's like what, 3? Sounds like too much time. I theorize that Katara is a ghost; in fact, every bender is a ghost except for Amon, who goes about his life constantly horrified and ridiculed everyday that he can see the dead while others can't. He vows to become a ghost-buster: everytime he cleanses a bender of their powers he's actually helping them cross over. The final episode will culminate with Katara realizing she is a ghost and all Amon wanted to do was help her and the other ghost-benders. Edit: Behind the mask is Bill Murray.

Above is pretty great. I realized while watching this episode, which had an entirely predictable ending but made for a solid episode otherwise, that a lot of things I don't like about Korra I would probably not mind if I wasn't watching it piecemeal. When I saw TLA, it was in 3-4 episode chunks, so if there was a bad episode, we just moved right along to the next one.

It's wonderful that this show is allowing two awesome women to coexist, even though one (Asami) is preventing the main character from achieving her desired romance. It would be so easy for the writers to just sketch Asami as a brat, or a wuss, or some other one-dimensional trait to set up Korra as the "cool, deserving girl." Kudos to this show. Serious, serious kudos.

I have a question. Why the gently caress is the Avatar fandom apparently so obsessed with shipping? This is the first show I've ever heard of that had such a fanbase so rabidly obsessed with romance like this. How did this even get started??

You've just not been exposed to enough of them. Virtually any work of fiction that gains significant internet following has fans who are obsessed with shipping. Avatar isn't anything unique.

Uhura x whoever, not so much, though I'm sure Scotty-Chekov exists somewhere.

Harry Potter probably did too, the actress playing a girl who got with Harry got death threats when she got announced and I've heard Supernatural has some legitimately scary fans who think the two main actors are actually secretly loving and tried to get one of their wives thrown out of a convention for dressing like a hooker (in their words). At least cartoon characters can't be actually attacked or threatened. How it got started can probably be summed up as "the internet" although there were probably fan magazines discussing Moonlighting or whatever pre internet. thebardyspoon fucked around with this message at May 22, 2012 around 13:35 |

This is the first show I've ever heard of that had such a fanbase so rabidly obsessed with romance like this. How did this even get started?? Any work of fiction featuring two or more characters, especially works of fiction aimed at and featuring teenagers, is going to inevitably feature romance plots. In turn, different people will have different ideas of how those romance plots turn out. Inevitably some of those people will become incredibly invested in the idea because that is what happens. You hear about it a lot with Avatar for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that Avatar is a fairly gender-neutral show with a lot of fans from both genders and for whatever reason female fans tend to be the ones who enjoy the romance aspect more. Inevitably some of those fans are going to be obsessive or crazy because that is the nature of these things. (Also there are groups of fans who like to whine about "shipping" because it is pointless/stupid/whatever. These are often the exact same fans who will get into multi-paragraph arguments about the minutia of who would win in a fight and how bloodbending should totally have let Aang explode Ozai's heart. These fans are pretty vocal, especially on internet message boards, and so you hear about it more because they draw attention to it.) Do shippers just need to get laid more, or what? Well, and is it just me, or is there something uniquely creepy about playing Character Matchmaker? I can basically get into the head of someone who just fantasizes about loving or romancing their favorite character themselves, but getting obsessed about X Character hooking up with Y Character, and A hooking up with B, strikes me as especially odd, in a way I can't quite articulate.

The difference between a fan and a shipper is that a fan is emotionally invested in the characters with hopes as to what will happen next, and a shipper is a rabid fan who disregards some canon events and interprets others specifically to support their pet theory that two (or more) characters are in a romantic relationship. Often a hosed-up relationship.

Because despite what people around here like to think, the show is aimed at tweens and teens. Romance is pretty front and centre of most kids' lives at that age. Personally, while it's not my thing, I don't think it's a rabid obsession. It's just a way of connecting with the series, albeit on a more character/emotion-driven level than the "inspect every single aspect of the worldbuilding in minute detail" tactic that tends to be favoured by the older and more male part of fandom.
