She was sheltered her whole life and turned out to be an incredibly talented bender and fierce fighter. What has she ever had to be afraid of? Her breakdown when she starts crying and says she's so scared and doesn't know what to do really seems legitimate now that I think of it. It hasn't been said yet, but it doesn't sound like she's experienced many hardships or many things at all. So what does she have to be arrogant about? Oh right, because I'm the mother fuckin' avatar!

It's my opinion but I don't care for Korra's attitude. I love that's she's fiery, strong, and determined. But she's impatient, and that shows off a bit of immaturity. Nothing wrong with that, just not a quality I like to see in a character. Also not demanding perfection from fictional characters, just wish she was a bit more mature. But I guess as she's going on this journey, she will grow and learn, just like any normal person.

I know, Aang was the least favorite of mine. Because Korra was so protected, a reality check will most likely help her. But as I said, "not demanding perfection from fictional characters, just wish she was a bit more mature. But I guess as she's going on this journey, she will grow and learn, just like any normal person."

Edit: Also I don't think making a character awesome from the start would make a show boring. Being awesome and/or perfect doesn't mean you're incapable of change, learning, or growing.

Aang wasn't very mature either. Characters grow. Well, in good shows they don't. If a character is just awesome from the start, it would make for a very boring show. Toph, Katara, Sokka and especially Zuko all had flaws that they ended up working through.

I'm beginning to think more and more that the scene with Korra breaking down and crying comes about as a result of being chi-blocked by Amon and basically forcing her to experience life without bending. This would be interesting considering her whole identity seems to be wrapped up in bending and being the Avatar and it all started from a rather early age.

This is what I imagined, that she never learned what chi blocking was and "OMG WHY?! WHAT IS THIS?!" I gotta say, if I ws pretty badass and someone took me down and I couldn't move, I'd be pretty scared to fight them again. Jesus, what have you done, Ty Lee?!

And really Aang grew the least of the major characters: he wasn't static, but really once he learned about the Airbender genocide and the time limit of the comet, by the midpoint of the first season, he had already been through his most significant changes compared to the others: it was more about getting the bending skills and support to win the war.

It looks like Korra's flaws and immaturity might be a bigger point of the series, but it stands to reason. The first series set the tone of a world that desperately needs the Avatar it always had in the past, and then Aang having to become that, with the question being how and with whom. The new series is one that opens by raising the question of what place the Avatar has in a new world, and so Korra's question is what she needs to become in the first place. For all that she's known she was the Avatar for a very long time, she doesn't have the clear answer of what this means she should do that Aang did.

Yes, I think the fact that Korra doesn't have a clear goal yet is one of the strong points of the series. It means her journey will be defined by her choices, not by the circumstances in which she makes those choices.

Well, between that and Amon's "Energybending" (which I'm only assuming right now is a direct result of 1:10-1:12 in that YouTube link).

Now that I think about it, the above could be option one of what goes down. Option two is that Amon forces Korra into the Avatar state way before she's ready and she just utterly loses control, playing right into Amon's propaganda (this may or may not have been mentioned previously in this thread).

So far, Korra's answer to this is:

1) Hit things
2) Hit things a lot.

I'm sure it could be a combination of things that makes her break or something more serious. But I definitely believe how serious the Equalists are, coupled with their abilities is going to put some fear into Korra.

TLA was a show where princesses were allowed to command armies. Pretty much the only instance of sexism was that Northern Water Tribe master who insisted females should not learn martial waterbending.

Nah there was lots more than that. Yues' marriage arrangements, Tophs formal education (which definitely wasn't just because of her age), Sokkas expectations of Katara. Lots of social measures were against the emancipation of women.

It's pretty drat good. More people watched this than the season premiere of Mad Men; in fact, don't quote me on this, but I think that's around Walking Dead numbers. Either way, it pulled those numbers on a Saturday morning.

The real giveaway is that the press release claims that this is "Basic Cable's number one kid's show and the top animated series of the week." So yeah, major victory for Nickelodeon, kids programming, and good television in general.

Korra is going to better than TLA. Its going to do what all good sequel should do: take an original premise and explore and deconstruct it. TLA was great but a pretty standard campbell-esque monomyth. It had to do a lot of establishing and world building. The context has been provided, and now we get to see it played with. The characters are going to be more rounded and layered from out the gate, and the conflicts and relationships are going to be more interesting.

Were seeing positive reaction because of this.

The number of people interested in the premiere of a sequel is a testament to the quality of the original. Normally I'd be worried about them retaining the original fans, but it doesn't seem like that's going to be a problem.

One thing I really noticed while making the gif was the animation quality of this series compared to TLA. It seems so much better than last go around and it's so noticeable in 720p! I have the old series on DVD but I don't remember it looking so awesome right off the bat, but maybe I should bust it out and make a closer comparison.

All of the bending and action scenes look amazing but the detail in backgrounds is breath taking too. I love the pinkish skyline with the cloud breaks and sunbeams when Korra is trying some air bender meditation. Some really beautiful environments when I was expecting the entire series to be way down to earth in Republic City.

I'm thinking of what could be a good antagonist for Team Avatar 2.0 to face in Book 2. I'm going with Fire Nation Neo Nazis who worship Ozai and Azula and want to return Republic City to a colony. It would be a good oppertunity to see Fire Lord Zuko's Son or whoever dispatiching Tenzin and Korra to sort it out.

I tried to start a Legend game for Avatar a while back with my friends. There's even rules for controlling all four elements! Sadly it never went anywhere. Had a couple interesting ideas for it too, though seeing Korra now I have to say playing in Republic City would probably be even better.
