She was sheltered her whole life and turned out to be an incredibly talented bender and fierce fighter. What has she ever had to be afraid of? Her breakdown when she starts crying and says she's so scared and doesn't know what to do really seems legitimate now that I think of it. It hasn't been said yet, but it doesn't sound like she's experienced many hardships or many things at all. So what does she have to be arrogant about? Oh right, because I'm the mother fuckin' avatar!

I'm beginning to think more and more that the scene with Korra breaking down and crying comes about as a result of being chi-blocked by Amon and basically forcing her to experience life without bending. This would be interesting considering her whole identity seems to be wrapped up in bending and being the Avatar and it all started from a rather early age.

Well, between that and Amon's "Energybending" (which I'm only assuming right now is a direct result of 1:10-1:12 in that YouTube link).

Now that I think about it, the above could be option one of what goes down. Option two is that Amon forces Korra into the Avatar state way before she's ready and she just utterly loses control, playing right into Amon's propaganda (this may or may not have been mentioned previously in this thread).

The first series set the tone of a world that desperately needs the Avatar it always had in the past, and then Aang having to become that, with the question being how and with whom. The new series is one that opens by raising the question of what place the Avatar has in a new world, and so Korra's question is what she needs to become in the first place. For all that she's known she was the Avatar for a very long time, she doesn't have the clear answer of what this means she should do that Aang did.

So far, Korra's answer to this is:

1) Hit things
2) Hit things a lot.

That whole scene with Amon was intense, although I can't help but feel that Amon's backstory is just a little too linear and blasé at the moment. So a Firebender killed his parents and burned him; couldn't that have just as easily happened with a non-Bender? For that matter, I want to hear more about this "The Avatar has failed the world" stuff.

I can't wait for the episode to go up online because I want to watch it again and see if I get the same impression I did this morning. I did catch some good things (Korra and Bolin facial expressions, Mr. Anime) so it wasn't without merit but it was all severely overshadowed by the love triangle or quadrilateral or whatever and because it felt so shotgunned in, I was rolling my eyes at a good chunk (perhaps most of) the episode. Compound that with an overall pace that feels like the show's turbo button had been pressed since the beginning and it doesn't leave a well-off first impression for me.

So, I look forward to when I can see this next.

Well, personally, the worst Avatar episode is still better than the best of most everything else on TV and I imagine a lot of people might agree with that sentiment.

Ultimately, I'm hoping this is going to turn into another episode, for me, like that-one-from-Book-3-that-we-aren't-supposed-to-talk-about-per-the-OP. Subsequent re-watches of said episode have mellowed out the bad I saw in it and made it into "OK, I get what's going on and I can appreciate it, despite any amount of groan-inducing."

Well, this pretty much came to fruition.

I wasn't entirely sure how to think about this episode Saturday, aside from the paranoid conspiracy of Bryan and Mike underwriting some kind of "Chill out" message to the fangirls (still get some kind of weird vibe about that but I digress). I think perhaps some of my initial discomfort came about because I was comparing it to The Boiling Rock. I still maintain that The Boiling Rock could have just as well been one episode but it was a whole two episodes in a 20 episode season that was running down the clock at that point, which forced a bunch of other things into an even smaller set of episodes. I think the same thing happened with The Spirit of Competition but even more so because this is only a 12 episode season and we're approaching the halfway point. This is assuming that the Amon/Equalist conflict is going to be resolved in the 12 episode first season but if that's not the case, then scratch the above.

In a similar vein, I think I initially felt that some of the teen romance drama could have been done previously somewhere before this episode. It had felt totally pushed into this episode in a kind of "We have to have this somewhere so let's just put as much as possible over there" way. After seeing this episode again, I think it's alright after all. I can handle the teen romance and whatnot but it would help if it can be spread out as much as possible (and for Nick to cut out the Twilight shenanigans on Korra Nation).

So what's to draw them in? Asami is a Perfect Girlfriend who just appears, solves their problems and stays out of the way, hardly providing even a foil to Korra. Its the simplest explanation, as far as we've seen. Narritively speaking, Asami has a significantly less than zero chance of being involved with the Equalists.

Makes sense, but the question then becomes did Mako have any kind of influence on Asami to make her go from full Amon loyalist to something less? As in, will she betray the cause at some point perhaps because she sees what Amon's endgame is?

This reminds me: wasn't Asami supposed to be some kind of streetcar racer? Whatever happened to that?

Definitely a solid episode. The mechs certainly present an interesting development, although not entirely unsurprising given the rate of industrialization with the help of bending. It was pretty sweet how Lin used her feet to see the underground tunnel. I wonder if Toph taught that to just Lin or everyone at her metal bending academy. Anyone know why Sato said Toph wouldn't be able to bend platinum?

As I recall, Metalbending isn't so much Metalbending in and of itself but is really more just bending the Earth-based impurities of the metal. Toph developed it because it was a natural use of her blind-based Earthbending and, in a way, a requirement of Metalbending. So, it would make sense that anyone Toph trained would have to learn Toph-vision first and then bend metal. Furthermore, if platinum is really that pure (I'm not sure myself; this is the first I've heard of that), then Toph wouldn't be able to Metalbend it if she's bending the (non-existant) impurities.
