I think Roku was just trying to explain it to a little kid. It's pretty clear in the final episode that Aang can more or less enter the Avatar state at will. His eyes flash briefly and then he just...does poo poo, like put out all those giant fires by moving the ocean.

That's pretty drat impressive. And I have to imagine that Aang let the White Lotus in on how the Avatar State is supposed to work and what it does and left instructions. But it took a great deal of spiritual affinity to master, which Korra lacks, and she's never been in any real mortal danger to draw it out by instinct...she's been stuck in a training camp he entire life.

I can't imagine that, as the Avatar, you aren't supposed to be taught how to do it. It seems like a way better idea to train the Avatar to use it before some threat has a chance to draw it out where its a lot less stable. Aang was extremely dangerous to everyone around him in the Avatar State before he learned how to control it. I doubt that's something meant to be left to chance.

But this becomes a perfect chance to bring out Spirit Aang later on.

Yeah, when Roku is telling Aang about the Avatar State, we see flashbacks of the previous Avatars doing the brief eye flash as well (including my personal favourite, Unnamed Fire Avatar)

Yea, but in a real fight how well is she going to do? Appa could at least hold his own in some circumstances.

She's a giant polar bear mixed with a dog, I think she can handle herself, particularly when most of the enemies Korra will be facing are non-benders

I'm beginning to think more and more that the scene with Korra breaking down and crying comes about as a result of being chi-blocked by Amon and basically forcing her to experience life without bending. This would be interesting considering her whole identity seems to be wrapped up in bending and being the Avatar and it all started from a rather early age.

I actually really like this idea, and it could be the impetus for her getting more in touch with her spiritual side

I thought the tattoos were for creating a new airbending technique? Aang did the air scooter thing and I can't remember if the other monks had them or not. The previous Avatar of the Air Nomads that Aang talked to had them.

I really want to see Tenzin air scooter around, I can't imagine any way he could possibly look dignified while zooming around on a ball of air

Aw, now the world will have to miss out on my awesome theory that Amon is Momo, given human form by Koh on the condition that he lure Korra to the spirit world so that Koh can steal her face (he likes water tribe girls, you know). You can tell this is true because Amon is an anagram for MoAn, a portmanteau of Momo Man.

The fact that those people are in normal street clothes, unarmed (except for that one guy), and taken completely by surprise, is more than enough to see that this is not Good Guys vs. Bad Guys action sequence where we cheer. Do you need them to play the Last Agni Kai to recognize it as the twisted situation that it is? Just because it's a show on Nickelodeon doesn't mean that there can't be moral ambiguity to a scene without someone shouting "I'M NOT SURE WHAT WE'RE DOING IS RIGHT, GUYS!".

Yeah, the fact that it's Tarrlok leading the task force seems to be a pretty good indication that things aren't all hunky dory

Also, is that Rob Paulsen playing Tarrlok?
